We don't want to completely discourage people from posting. :) The idea is to use it when you strongly agree with a post but don't have anything to add to merit your own comment. This isn't really meant to be like Facebook where you can go around liking everything. Wasn't the point of adding a Like system to make it so we didn't have to post off-topic spam when we agreed with someone?

I believe you will be able to see who likes a post as well. The only thing that's being disabled is you won't have anything similar to post count keeping track of your total likes forum wide. (so there would be no incentive to beg for likes) I assume they are switching over to IP.Board v3 (w00t) In which case, mods/admins would be able to see who has the most likes in total.
