What (good) question would YOU ask a top 5 player?
Greedom1 replied to oddfaery2's topic in General Discussion
If you were 6th (not in the top 5 of course) would you try to get higher so you could spend hours answering some of these ridiculous questions? -
of course it's an April fools joke, but that sounded like it was written by a drunk person.

A Will Ferrell / John Cleese weapon would be awesome right about now. I'll settle for 11 cookies though :P -
Values? What do they mean and do you feel you have them?

Keep the replies coming folks - I really enjoy reading them. Thanks for those who already have. :) -
I was about to flame you back, but I bite my tongue....I would rather just say that you obviously are very protective of Jagex for some reason or you have not read the article. (or perhaps cannot comprehend) Queltar was taking on Jagex for making the parent guide a useless tool and for not following through on their own rules. Parents need to know what a game is like, in order to make an informed decision. The dumbing down of the game, the knowledge base, the Parent Guide, the Lummy tutors, fluffy sheep and the lummy teleport and bank were all timed to be in place to meet the delivery date for the "Official Runescape guide" for ages 9 to 12. Good luck fooling yourself the game is for older teens and adults. Please listen to some old BBC reports on Runescape where Jagex speak about how their best advertisement is word of mouth on the playground. 13 year olds don't go to any playgrounds that I have seen... I think that attitudes such as yours are more likely the reason why the community has gone into the toilet. Pretty vile stuff you wrote about a fellow player. Rather interesting as I personally hadn't put them all together. Obviously I could tell that they were trying to reach out to help newer players, but I had no idea about the timing of it. Let's all just try to keep the flaming down on this thread... after all, part 2 of the article comes on Monday...

I tend to disagree on a pretty fundamental level. If the parents don't like the game as Jagex have made it, then they can a) not pay for it, and B) stop their children from playing it. There are a multitude of games out there that are family friendly. The notion that Jagex is under some compunction to modify their product to suit the conservative morality of a vocal minority is wrong in my estimation. I agree. Parents should be parents and not just ipod-giving, rs-enabling, 7-jeans-buying people. I don't see any basis for this. Jagex is not under any responsibility to joint-parent anyone's children just because they created a computer game. Would you hold a car-maker responsible if a 13yo got behind the wheel and took a car for a spin? Or perhaps the makers of any of the many driving simulators, or toy cars that promote motor vehicles to people too young to drive. I wouldn't, I'd lay the blame fairly and squarely at the feet of the parents. If the car maker advertized and made its product appealing to minors (in this case under 13), then yes there is a responsibility. (Think of cigarette manufacuters -Joe Camel- in the US pre-1996.) You are correct in focusing on parental obligations, but you are a bit off on assuming that Jagex has no (if not legal, moral at least) liability when they are clearly advertising to minors (under 18 and under 13). I'm not saying their game causes harm (far from it), just merely responding to your point. Quite simply, it's a matter of personal freedom. No-one is forced to play Runescape (that I know of), they do so willingly. Jagex operates in a free country. The game contains nothing that contravenes the laws of that country so they are free to distribute it. The people who play it are well within their rights to exercise freedom of choice and play or not play the game as much as they like. Though you and I both may embrace the benefits of free will and liberated thought, you surely cannot forget the obligation a business entity (Jagex) has to its clientele. Given that many of its players are of questionable age (under 13) they have a supreme responsibility to provide a safe gaming environment. I will argue that any problems that exist at present are miniscule, but nevertheless as a game creator/developer Jagex is ultimately responsible for the game they've produced.

Though I cannot reply to 40 plus replies that all deserve comments, I will add the following: (directed towards the author of the article in question) 1. I truly respect his dedication for the game of RS and admire his effort to make it better. (This is something ALL of us can agree on) 2. I agree with many of his concerns. 3. I find the self-righteous and prudish attitude was a bit over the top.... gambling in RS... and "thieving" being a bad influence? Please... 4. (To keep this short) Any point the author of that article had that was worth reading was negated by the biased attitude as well as trying to over-emphasize his argument. He practiced one of the biggest mistakes of debate which is to bring in evidence which doesn't support your original argument, but which rather opens it up to more scrutiny... (Previous comments on this thread clearly make that apparent.) 5. That said, I will be redundant and point you to #1. He gave a lot of effort to writing that (paid for the piece or not) and that should be recognized. After all, his intentions are noble, even if his arguments and such are a bit amiss.

I'm saying exactly what I said in my post. Most of the skills are not used by anyone as a main source of income. Most people desire to do barrows, dk, dueling, etc.. So basically, people get rich these days off of mainly combat. THEN they decide "Hey, I'll spend this much money in a skill and power train it, losing a lot of money." In RSC, people worked skills for money. Merchanting still existed, yes, and monsters such as black demons were still fairly profitable, but Barrows, DK, dueling, clues, and abby demons have become the main source (or atleast main goals) of very many Runescapers. For example, 99 fishing used to be desireable and very useful, same goes for mining. However, now these skills are being neglected and they have some of the least people with level 99 in it. Comparing this to skills such as cooking, fletching, and firemaking, we see that most of RS is now in the mentality of skills being something to spend money on, not make money with. You're right on most of your points, and I suppose the major disagreement I have isn't with your logic, but rather the logic of the RS players who play in the way you described. I would say that most low lvls usually start out on fletching and alching or perhaps wcing or fishing to make gp rather than purely on combat alone (though ankous seem rather popular...). I still play to level skills primarily. The money I do make from skills I almost always invest back into other skills. I, like many other players, have some skills I truly enjoy leveling beyond the point of rationality. For me, they're farming, herblore, and crafting. However, since the 99 cape updates, many who had stopped in the 80-90 lvl area have bit the bullet and plodded onwards. Obviously money helps on this, and describing the behavior of a lvl 60 vs a lvl 120+ in lvling skills is like the difference between night and day. Lastly, given the dynamic nature of this game, it's rather difficult to compare how players used to play (and ascribe a certain value to that sort of play) to the behavior of players at present. RSC players played the game the way it was structured at the time. Was it more pleasant? I can assume yes, but given the hundreds of major changes and minor tweaks that Jagex has made to the game since, it's rather difficult to say that the players now are playing the game "wrong." (I know you're not saying this of course.) If you put yourself in the position of someone who started 1-2 months ago, you couldn't be held accountable for not appreciating what RSC (or RS2 about 2 years ago) was all about. Instead of blaming the collective decisions thousands of players make on a daily basis, perhaps it's worthwhile to focus on the cumulative effect of Jagex's minor changes throughout. (These are my thoughts, and not necessarily a response/rebuke to your comments.)

Auto-Alching put to an end....for now?

OH! try and see if your mouse has its configuration switched. (Right handed vs. left handed) Just switched mine to left handed and mouse keys were screwey (at least the 5 key was...) -

I just tried mousekeys and the only thing that I noticed that brought up the right click menu was the + key in the number pad. (Tried shift, ctrl, alt all while hitting the 5 key... didn't get the right click menu, but on the + I did.) First check if that key is stuck or something, otherwise I really don't know... -
There are already tons of interesting and easy ways to make money. The problem is that newer players see others with gobs of gp and think that if others have say 50 mill or 500 mill, they feel that they should be able to get 5 mill in a relatively short period of time (say a week). When the reality hits they become disappointed and disillusioned because they feel they need to "catch up" or they need to get the money NOW. Of course these players rarely realize that those with 50 mill or even 500 mill got that money through hard work and perseverance. As a skiller myself, I earned every gp I have in the game through months and even years of persistence. When players want "newer ways of making money" they're simply focusing on the only goal they have at the moment without appreciating what they'll do when they have enough. So they'll get a new way to make their millions. Then what? It still doesn't make the game better... Money by itself does nothing. It's what it can do for you that gives it its true value. Whether it's raising prayer or con, money does help. However, Jagex doesn't need to add new ways to add money to the game - they can just make it more interesting (easier maybe) to level the skills they already have. (Myself, I want to see better gameplay and interfaces looong before they start overcooking the ways to make gp.)

Gree's Mini-guide to obtaining fruits for protecting trees.

Yes, but a better question would be "why wouldn't you need 500 bananas?" I mean, if you have to ask about the bananas... Heh - an alternative would be to collect bones (either kill men or pick up from someone who is) in perhaps edgeville or the goblin hut in lumby are two good places. Bring runes for bones to bananas and presto, you're in banana heaven... This would only really be needed if you didn't have the banana to tele to ape atoll in the first place. -

Speaking of times not being correct - I just experienced a horrible lag on my herb plot. The details: Torstol planted on roof of Troll Stronghold. Growing time: over 10 hours. Yes, 10 hours! So last night I planted a torstol, waited about 60-70 mins and it hadn't finished, so I logged out and went to bed. Today I logged in about 8+ hours later to find it hadn't grown. I did the new quest, came back and it still hadn't grown. Ugh! Then, I farmed some other plots, (about 60 mins later) and it -still- hadn't grown. Finally, I logged out, had lunch and when I came back it was finished. I think the timer reset when they updated (even though it was almost fully grown), and didn't get restarted until I signed in. (I think the same happened for my fruit trees as they should have been finished a few hours ago as well.)

Greedom1 replied to Greedom1's topic in General Discussion
Lol, no problem - I'm glad you enjoyed the post and thanks for replying. Given that it is a game, I do appreciate the fact that people may indulge in their fantasies of bad behavior and such. Still, it's good to know that many players are decent and kind folk. -
well said - I agree with everything you wrote. I'm sure that Jagex does introduce and develop content without heavily depending on polls. They've done rather well at developing this game without our say-so for a long time. That said, recent polls seem to give me the impression that they're giving the audience a bit too much credit for making rational and intelligent choices. (such as choosing "making more gp" as a choice...) Something as central to the core of the game as a skill should not be structured around what the prevailing desires of the game population has at one moment in time. It's too important and integral to the game to have it be determined by short-term thinking. A better idea would be to have several polls running (and repeated if need be). So they can gauge the relative importance experience in the game has on a player's outlook. Example: when you're level 60 with like 900 total, of course gp is something you crave. However, when you're level 90 and 1500 total, perhaps it's something else. Same goes for lvl 126 and 2000+ total. A time-series poll that allows for players to provide input during the course of their RS adventures would tell me a lot more about how players play this game and what they want as opposed to a one-time poll that only runs for a week or so. I think it's clear to a lot of us that Jagex seems to be making a lot of game-content choices without appreciating the long-term impact they'll have on gameplay, RS economy, pking, etc. For them to introduce a skill and assume a poll that ran for a week is "what the players want" is sloppy game development. I'm sure they'll put some thought into it (one would hope). Perhaps the polls are simply a way for Jagex to give players the impression that they care about the gamer's desires, and nothing more.

Seems like they didn't really address the issue. Of course there isn't a sequel to MM... yet. They didn't definitively say whether a sequel was in development, just that one hasn't been released (which we all know). Ugh, and to imply that all questions can be answered in the Knowledge Base when they can't even answer them directly is just ridiculous.

if you want 20 baskets of em I'll race you sometime. Joking aside, I hear you. But do not underestimate the the banana shop on ape atoll. I can manage easily 400-500 bananas an hour there. -

haha no its 50 =; u havent done the complete recipe of disaster chest or someone just bought some apples and tomatoes there :boohoo: :-s you haven't finished the quest then is my guess, but a very nice thing about the recipe chest is that others can't affect it! so it does not matter if someone else has bought from it... =D happy? :P Actually I believe others who have finished quest can affect the number of apples in the chest (same as any other store). If it operated how you mention, it'd be even better. As it is, it's almost always fully stocked. -
personally fairy ring tele to desert by the Kalphite caves are shortest for me (edge tele, then fairy tele to BIQ) I wouldn't recommend it for KQ hunting, but for tasks or potato cacti collecting, this is what I've found to work the best.
