  1. You see a slight difference in speed with readyboost in benchmarks but no real world performance gain. Meaning you will not notice a difference, especially with 2GB ram plus Since you already have 8GB of ram, it would be a waste using readyboost. Although, it couldn't hurt anything.
  2. I always found Avira antivirus to be more user friendly than Avast but that's more of a preference. You always don't have to register. Since your pretty paranoid about security, update XP to SP3. It contains many security fixes and improvements. A hijackthis log will always help. Post one after you scan and remove anything that your antivirus finds.
  3. Well it's not that far away and I can pick up the signal with my wireless g now but it's not strong enough to connect to. I'm hoping just a wireless N router will be enough (maybe with a high gain antenna).
  4. Well I have a crappy wireless G 54mb/s router and I want something faster for better file transfers. It needs to have wireless N and be able to reach to my grandmothers house that is 3 houses away. I would consider buying a router and then buying a higain antenna to change out the ones that come with it. My current router can reach with 1 bar of signal (too low to use) with a 8db antenna so this shouldn't be too hard with a wireless N router. Any suggestions? (if you have nothing useful to post or have no idea what your talking about, stay out please) Thanks in advance.
  5. Yeah I had done that, I noticed because it reset my overclock. All good now, thanks for the help guys. That's good that you figured it out. I would run memtest on the rest just to make sure there aren't any further problems.
  6. I head there where signal problems with those some where. I could be wrong but might be something to look up. Maybe it is just an issue with how the receiver is placed? Or rotated? :-s I am just telling what i heard. I jsut causally read it on the internet some where. Sloter is correct. I have this mouse. Logitech made a huge batch (months worth) of defective G7s with hardware that would crap out and lose signal. Even if the receiver was an inch away from the mouse. I sent mine in for warranty after the first month of use and the new one hasn't ever lost signal or stops responding in about 6 months of use. Now that all the bugs are fixed, I would recommend the mouse. If somebody needs a cheap gaming mouse, OCZ makes a really good mouse. I used this one for a few hours and it was as good as the top of the line RAZER mouse. I may pick one up for my other computer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6826100001
  7. You sure you reset the cmos correctly? Usually they're 3 pins with the jumper on two and you need to move the jumper to the other side for 20secs (with the psu unplugged of course). Or just have the computer unplugged and remove the battery for a few minutes. You said the heatsink broke off while it was being moved, it could have bent some pins on the board when it broke off. Remove the processor and check for any bent, missing, or damaged pins. What heatsink did you have installed? Just a tip for next time, if your not running the stock heatsink, then always remove it before shipping the computer long distances.
  8. That depends on the wireless mouse. All of the cheap (under $50) wireless mice suck. The expensive ones from Logitech like the Revolution and the G7 are really good, they should be for the $60-$70 price tag. I have the G7 amazing mouse but I wish it had more buttons like the G5 which has a forward button. To the OP, do you play any games, besides Runescape with this mouse? Like fps games?
  9. Same if the fan is bad in the psu too. Always replace a bad psu and don't try to fix it.
  10. So the computer died after 7 years of use? That's common with any brand of computer. (I don't care about peoples stories saying not true I've had the same HP for 10 years ect.) I hate when people make these threads because it's all opinion and stories of a computer breaking from one person. You have no idea if the problem was a manufacturing defect or the person was an idiot. My cousin says HP computers suck because he dropped one down the stairs and it wouldn't work right after that. My school just replaced all the computers with HPs and we have had less helpdesk tickets than before. Both are true stories, but you see what I mean? I could cherry pick stories to make any brand look good or bad. Just get the fastest computer you can get from any brand for your money.
  11. The hosts file will not have anything to do with this if his two computer redirect to the same site. Unless both computers have the same exact malware. It would have to be a redirection from you router to cause it happening on more than one computer.
  12. I'm a multitasker too... I guess my experience is due to the fact that the PCs I use are single-core systems, then... Because everything else I do doesn't use much CPU... But call up RuneScape alongside whatever I'm doing, and *WHAM*, instant 100% (even with hardware AA enabled on the faster one) CPU usage... Best I can figure is that it is being caused by the amount of RAM being eaten up (FireFox jumps near 256 MB!) for RuneScape, and the continuous processing going on to generate the image... For all I know, it may be corrected by upgrading the FireFox version... Bright side? At least I'm lag-free, for the most part... :-k ~D. V. "I hate being a RAM-hog..." Devnull Yeah if you actually were using the newest version of Firefox and Java maybe that usage would drop.
  13. So your saying that the Japaneese auto makers that have factories in the US would rather ship their supplies from out of the country into the US when they can cut cost by not having to import them? Steel is steel, aluminum is aluminum. The quality has nothing to do with the supplies the big 3 are getting, it's how they're manufacturing their parts out of the supplies.
  14. They should not get a bailout. If the big 3 can't adapt to an ever changing market they should fail. It's a free market, survival of the fittest and US car makers are just not competing. Even if they don't get the bailout, their not going to disappear, they will have to file chapter 11 and restructure. This will be good for GM, they need to slim their product lineup. GM has 8 different US car brands, think of all the money they could save by eliminating/or merging the bottom 2-3 of those with their other lines. People are also saying that if the big 3 do fail there will be a huge loss of jobs. This would only be temporary, people still need cars, the Japanese and other auto makers would have to pick up the slack and hire more people, build new factories, and most likely buy the supplies from the distributors that were supplying GM and the others. A lot of people forget the fact that the Japanese and other foreign auto makers manufacture their cars in the US too.
  15. I knew somebody was going to bring this up and have no idea what their talking about. Every app is free and they are not trials, you get to keep them, they are full apps. You don't lose anything. Next year there will be paid apps like the Apple app store but for now those same apps are free. Such as the pacman is free on the android store while it's about $5 for the same exact one on the apple store.
  16. My laptop has the same graphics chip as most of these netbooks (GMA 950) and it plays HD fairly good. It can run full screen at max (AA not supported) with no lag except at GE, to get no lag in the whole game you need to lower the character detail. Although, my laptop is a Pentium dual core (non core2) so that may make a difference over those atom processors.
  17. The Storm has no wifi, nuff said. Verizon wants to milk every dime out of you and forces you to use data at all times instead of faster wifi. The Storm does have a better touch screen keyboard than the iphone because of the click screen technology. If you want a smart phone like the iphone with a keyboard, check out the Tmobile G1, it has tons of apps like the app store for the iphone and they're all free till the end of the year.
  18. The processors tend to degrade after a year (9 months is close enough) and require more voltage to run at your desired overclock. Up the voltage one notch and it should be stable again. Note: when I say degrade, don't be worried because these chips can last many years with a modest overclock like yours. (I have the same processor and this happened to me)
  19. No, unless you are patient enough to wait till Holiday 2009 to get Windows 7. It also depends what operating system you have now, if you have XP and just want to upgrade the OS, it's not really worth it.
  20. Zenwalk http://www.zenwalk.org/ It may be a little slow, but it is a full featured distro unlike DSL. Although I like Xubuntu a lot but the specs may be higher than Zenwalk.
  21. People need to get one thing clear about Windows 7. The kernel is not Minwin, it is using an upgraded Windows Vista kernel, it is going to be over the 40MBs the Minwin kernel is reported at. Minwin is being used for a completely different operating system (not yet announced). A person I know got his hands on the new Windows 7 build that Microsoft demoed a few days ago. So I'm going to burn a copy from him as soon as I see him. I really want to try out the new features since the M3 build that I currently have. I don't see why Microsoft is even developing a 32bit desktop version. Every computer made in the last 4 years can do 64bit. Them developing a 32bit version is just stalling the move to an all 64bit operating system which would push programs to be natively coded for 64bit. Vista should be the last operating system that is 32bit. Besides, if your computer does not have a 64bit processor, you probably can't run Windows 7 well.
  22. Ubuntu 8.10 (came out yesterday) is a big improvement for average users. It now has wireless card drivers built in. It detected my wireless card right after install and saw my wireless network with no install or tweaking necessary. I entered te password and I was online, it's a lot like Window's wireless now. Ubuntu 8.10 seems faster than 8.04. Ubuntu 8.04 seemed bloated/slow compared to older versions to me which 8.10 seems to fix.
  23. cause with vista...you lose a gig of ram -.- and a good amount of video memory... (btw have you heard of 64-bit XP's? still would recognize the 4 gigs anyways) edit: is that vista you're talking about is 64-bit? (seems too good for $99) Vista has better memory management, the ram it uses when not gaming is irreverent. Why only use 500MB when just going online and have 3.5GB just sitting there wasted? 64bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116488 32bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116485 Both $99
  24. If it's the psu fan, replace the whole psu. You do not want to open up a psu. Even when the psu is unplugged the capacitors hold huge amounts of voltage. If it's any other fan, just replace it. Open up your computer and see where the noise is coming from.
