  1. Are you using the restore disk from within windows or by booting from it? Try booting from the disk and restoring that way. If you have trouble booting from the disk, make sure the cd-rom drive is the first boot device. To check go into the bios by pressing del repeatedly when starting the computer to you see a (usually blue) screen.
  2. Him saying it's a socket lga775 system would means it's a desktop. To the OP are you just getting a heatsink to keep the cpu cooler? Or are you lanning to overclock. I would say 60c is fine for a temp if it was under full load, even 65c would be good. You may just need to put some new thermal compound on your processor. Arctic Silver 5 is considered the best.
  3. More info on the beeps would be useful. Like if it was 1 short 2 long ect. Have you tried booting into safe mode and see if the problem still happens? Press f8 repeatedly while booting. It may be an overheating problem. Download the program Speedfan (Google search). This program will tell your system temps. Post a screenshot here of the program running (do this after the safe mode thing).
  4. Yes it will work, don't listen to the other people above me. It doesn't even have to be the same speed because all the ram installed will work at the speed of the slowest stick. All you need to make sure of is that it's the same type (don't be putting ddr2 ram in a ddr motherboard :P ). If you need to know the type of ram you have in your computer, you can download CPUZ. I would also suggest buying ram online at a place like http://www.newegg.com instaid of buying from Dell because that overcharge.
  5. hold windows key and hit pause break + advanced tab + settings under performance + advanced tab + change under virtual memory Set it to 1.5 times your ram and make the initial and the maximum the same size. If you still get the error after that, raise it some more.
  6. I would say you may be able to pull a 7900GS off with that power supply. FPS Group is a decent brand. Look at the sticker on the power supply and write down the amps on the 12, 5 and 3.3 volt rails and post them here.
  7. Peer-to-Peer is very unsafe. You call Limewire safe? Some torrents maybe but not stuff like Limewire. I can honestly say I have never had a virus from Limewire or any other P2P programs. Limewire is not a virus, what you download can be. Most of the stuff on Limewire is safe but obviously some isn't. The infected files are usually easy to detect because the size is completely wrong from what it should be. EX: A 4 minute mp3 file that is 300KBs big.
  8. Peer-to-Peer is fine if you know what your doing, don't download a full movie if it's 30mb... If in doubt, scan before you open and use common sense and you'll be fine. Now that your a mod in the future it is recommended that if you are going to post something about Peer-to-Peer downloading, use something that is otherwise free as an example so as not to encourage illegal downloading of movies :? Not every single movie file is illegal to download.
  9. Nope, waits are long up here in MA too. I have been to the emergency room too many times to remember. Mostly for doing stupid stuff, skateboarding and football ftw :D . My suggestion is to go to the emergency room just to be on the safe side. Trust me, you don't want to wait a week and then go and find out it's already healing and they need to re-break it.
  10. +1, finally it's not just me that is proving him wrong in threads :) . I have used 2000 with 128MBs of ram also and it wasn't that bad. I found 256MBs to very usable on 2000 for web browsing and basic stuff. People today are suggesting too much ram for these computers when all people want to do is browse the web and edit some photos. You don't need 2GBs of ram, even in Vista to do that. Not everybody is a gamer. The problem is that gamers and computer enthusiasts are suggesting the upgrades and they think having 5 programs open at once is normal for the average person.
  11. Any device that has come out after Vista has been released has Vista drivers and works perfectly fine. It may work even better on Vista than XP because the drivers are probably updated more frequently (see Creative X-FI). Incorrect again. Older games that were designed for XP and older operating system may not work with Vista because they were not made for Vista. Any game that comes out now will run perfectly fine on Vista and the game will need Vista for DirectX 10. Halo2 was not a directX 10 game. It only had an operating system check and would not install if you did not have Vista. It is still using directX9. Well if you ask me, you need to stop reading the bandwagon reviews of Vista and try it yourself.
  12. Sounds like your virus scan or firewall is filtering them.
  13. The thing AMD did wrong is they took on too much load at once. AMD knew they were going to be in hot water when Intel anounced the Core 2 Duo and instaid of foucusing on the things they needed to do to compete in the proccessor section, they take on more work. They got a little to spend happy and know they shot themselves in the foot because of it. They had tons of cash after the 2 years on top with the Athlon 64 and X2. The loans from the ATI purchase are killing them, without the ATI loans they would be doing a lot better. They may have even been in the black this holiday season without ATI. After they got threw the Core 2 Duo storm and came out with their own quad core and it because successful, then they should have considered buying ATI.
  14. Try this first: windows key +pause break advanced tab settings in startup and recovery section uncheck automatically restart
  15. To increase virtual memory do this: hold windows key + pause break advanced tab settings in performance section advanced tab click change in virtual memory click custom size, set it around 1500mb for the initial and maximum. Whatever number you choose, make sure the initial and maximum size are the same. If you are running out you may need to cut down on running programs or maybe get more ram.
  16. What the hell are you talking about? You newed to look at the price to preformance ratio. You can't compare AMD's high end to Intel's when they are hundreds of dollars in difference. The Phenom was not a failure, it just wasn't as fast as everybody hoped. It can still beat or tie the Q6600 and do it a little cheaper (like $10). The 38xx series of graphics cards are not even priced near the 8800GT, so don't compare them. I hate when people say Nvidia is faster in every way because of the 8800 ultra. Yeah that's true but if the competitor doesn't even have a product up in that price range, then of course Nvidia is faster. If AMD can get a graphics card to beat Nvidia in the midrange sector that is faster and cheaper, then they win. The midrange sector is what really matters too, more people buy $150-$200 graphics cards than $500 graphics cards. AMD is in a tough position here. I'm starting to see them go to a route that is going to make them more money. For graphics cards they are leaving the $500 high end range out of the picture because there is less money in that range than any else. AMD is also starting to focus on the OEM processor market, there is a lot more money to be made buy HP and Dell than anybody buying their chip off Newegg. They are also and have been in a very close integrated graphics chipset war which is huge money because even if the OEM picks and Intel chip they can still go with an ATI graphics chip. BTW I am not an AMD fanboy. I currently have a Core 2 duo (4300 @ 3ghz) and a x1950XT (best performance under $200 when I bought it, it still might be).
  17. So explain to us then, how do you use a P2P client "correctly"?... Downloading anything online, even through a P2P client you thought you could trust always carries the risk of catching a virus. You just don't realize that. Tip.it may try its best not to give you any malware, but unless those ads are theirs and theirs alone, you can't guarantee anything. They do a pretty good job of keeping their ads clean and in line, but since Google gives you the ads to display (and Google might not check for adware/malware in the people that give them ads), there's no implied guarantee that it's safe at all. For a P2P client you don't download things that are too good to be true. Like if you want a movie thats an hour long and it's only 5MBs big. I only use P2P for music only (.mp3 files, no other types), which usually can't contain viruses in them. Other file types can, like .wmv or .asf. The big thing is, don't use a client that is known to contain malware when you install them, such as Kazaa or Bearshare.
  18. Well if it's asking for a pin number, then it's not the batterry (it may have been that too, but not now). It may be that you put a pin on it so nobody could use it, or the phone may need the unlock code from your wireless provider. What most people (like me) are going to give you shots in the dark. The best thing to do is call your service provider for help.
  19. Any other incite other than a 1 word answer? I think there should be a sticky with common problems that newbies may have and explain the pros and cons of the top 5 distros or something. How to get your wireless card working in Linux should have it's own sticky, I had so much trouble getting my laptop card working :wall: .
  20. He bumped after 11 days. How about you leave and stop looking for a flame war.
  21. What? None of those cards have the same speed or capabilities as the other. The 8400GS is faster than the 7300GS, then guess what, the other cards are even slower. I would say it would play BF2 on medium settings or higher because the game is fairly old now.
  22. That will do no good, It's not really a problem like that. The live servers are getting overloaded from all the new subscribers they got for the Holidays. What they should have done is gotten more servers to anticipate this. I would have thought they would have gotten a lot more because this also happened with the Halo 3 launch which the servers were extremely slow. It makes you think where your $50 a year is going to :wall: .
  23. Guys get away from the graphics overheating problem. It's an onboard graphics card, they have the least chance of overheating. I'm assuming your on Windows XP. http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catal ... egrated-xp
  24. Well your stupid for only taking $20. I just charged $45 to fix an overheating job that was changing the thermal paste and cleaning the case of dust. If the person that asked me doesn't like what I charge, I simply say take it to Bestbuy and pay 3x more :) (btw they charge over $100 for what I did).
  25. The Simpsons Movie on Blueray. My aunt heard that my mom was getting me a HDTV so she thought that Blueray movies were what HDTVs played. Too bad I don't have a PS3 or a Blueray player :wall: . I exchanged it for the normal dvd and I got $15 back. That damn Blueray disk was $35  .
