farthest back i remember(2002) there was 4 different options. When you first went to the page, runescape.com, took you to jagex.com, which you clicked Runescape at the top. After doing this you had 4 options, Play Now members/free and Download Now Members/Free. If you clicked play now, it only took a few minutes to bring up, but if you clicked download now, it would take bout 10 minutes, but next time you would be connected instantly. After doing this you had your choice of about 12 f2p servers and 4 members servers. Most to a server was 1200 and there was no full option. I never explored any other aspect of the main webpage, because i was knew, and was interested in just the game itself, but i beleive there was a highscores page, and also a manual. Another interesting fact, as when you started a new account, you wouldnt do it on the frontpage, as you do now, but rather would click new account at the login page, this would take you through a few steps, and you shortly created your account. You would pick his appearence, but heres the interesting part, instead of going through tutorial island, you pick your characters class. You could be adventurer, warrior, wizard, archer, and miner.
