how hard is it to build a PC? or just buy a brand desktop?
Windows 7 Home Premium: $105 Mouse: $11 Keyboard: $14 Case: $26 DVD burner: $22 Video card: $19 CPU: $134 Motherboard: $48 RAM: $146 Power Supply: $21 HDD: $70 That is the computer that you linked to in part form. Total: $616. You could probably get cheaper RAM, I just went straight to the 3x2 choice. Also chose a 750gig HDD since it was the same as the cheapest 640gig. I would suggest only 4gigs of RAM though, definitely wouldn't buy that cheap of a power supply or video card either. I just linked to those because that is what the Gateway was. EDIT: The mother board I linked to is DDR3 1333 compatible and the memory was DDR3 1600. I don't actually think they would work together, but there would be something similar within a few dollars of them. Both are DDR3 though, and that is better than DDR2 which might be what is in the Gateway (they don't give hardly any info about what is in it).

Yeah if you are going 20" you are pretty much stuck with 1600x900, which isn't bad. Mine is actually only 21.5" and it is 1920x1080. It was around $180, I got one with a 2ms seek time for gaming. Also it is supposed to be more power efficient. This is the one. The only thing that sucks about it is the stand, it just kind of leans back at a 10 to 20 degree angle. I don't know how much you want to spend on a monitor, I'll tell you now that a nice monitor is really important if you want to game on it. If you find a prebuilt computer you like tell the price and we'll see if all the individual parts cost less.

$417. I had the case, OS, and video card already. It powers through Mass Effect 2 at 1920x1080 at max settings. Makes the X-Box 360 version look like a NES game. EDIT: Do you have existing parts that you can use? If you are going completely from scratch (ie even need a new mouse and keyboard) then it gets to the point that buying premade isn't as bad. EDIT2: For example this computer is the cheapest one on newegg that has the same processor as mine, $600 for it vs $417 for my build. It also comes with an OS, case, DVD-burner, cheap video card, mouse and keyboard. Altogether if I added that stuff to my build it would work out to be about the same price. However, I purchased a much better power supply, mother board and RAM than this one so my base price wouldn't be nearly $417.

Hard disk failure imminent?
Wording is relevant, it is usually pretty easy to tell legitimate errors/messages apart from illegitimate ones. You shouldn't base everything off of wording but it is good indicator that further research is needed. I've never seen a hard drive failure imminent error. Usually if they are going to die they just die.

It's actually the exact opposite, you can build one for much cheaper than buying a new one. It's not too hard either. Takes a while, but everything is fairly straight forward. You can also make a topic in this forum (or use this topic) and someone will help you out with that parts you need, then probably help you build it if you need help that way. You can check out my topic a few below about my recent computer build, I think it was OldJoe helped me choose the parts. I've built computers before so I didn't need help with that, I just don't keep up with the new hardware all that much and didn't know what would get the best bang for my buck.

Kepler Telescope finds Earthlike planet
If there is life out there it is not certain that it would be anything like life on earth. Also the chances of seeing it at a point of technology close to our own is almost 0. Human civilization really started what, 7,000 years ago? Homo sapiens only around 250,000 years or so, that is basically nothing on a galactic time scale. More likely if we find life it will not be sapient yet. Humans have existed for something like .001% (just guessed) of the amount of time that life on earth has existed. If they are more advanced than us then it is much more likely that they would have already observed us, possibly millions of years ago and maybe they are already extinct. But yeah, humanoid like life like you see in science fiction isn't plausible at all.

What movie(s) did you last see?
The one I was thinking of in particular was MirrorMask, but it apparently doesn't have the surreal tag on IMDb, so I may just not be getting the difference between fantasy and surrealism. A quick google search does have it on a few surreal lists, as well as some other fantasy movies. The line is just blurred. But I think it is in the same vein as Spirited Away, and actually the rest of Miyazaki's is pretty much like it too. I prefer Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, then probably Princess Mononoke and then Spirited Away in third of Miyazaki's movies. For live action surrealism you might as well start with one of the early surrealist films (and probably the most popular): Un Chien Andalou. There are many that people really, really like and are good movies but I just don't get into as much like Fellini's 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita; Lynch's Eraserhead and Blue Velvet; Bela Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies; ect... They are good movies and everything, I just don't enjoy them as much. I would suggest something like Emir Kusturica's Underground or Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker for foreign surreal movies. Although Stalker is just considered sci-fi, it really seems surrealist to me. There are also a few Hollywood surreal movies, and by that I mean they are fairly popular and may not seem quite as surreal as you want. This would be the movies of Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, David Lynch ect... A few individual ones would be Donnie Darko, Pan's Labyrinth, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Wristcutters, Big Fish. A few those are probably just fantasy. Summary: just check out MirrorMask and see how you like it.

Kepler Telescope finds Earthlike planet
The Kepler telescope is pretty awesome, I was hoping that it would find something and it did. Wish it would find something closer to home though.

It is pretty surreal, but if you want to see a really surreal movie I can give you a few suggestions.

Oblivion
I always like to have my stats at 100 eventually so 5/5/1 is usually what I do, but 5/5/5 can make the beginning easier. Archer is actually pretty fun, I usually like to do that because it is easier to stealth kill people that way.

Trouble with Window media player?
I used to be a solely VLC guy, until I tried Media Player Classic Home Cinema. With the exception of broken files it plays everything that VLC does, and it seems to handle HD files better. Plus a better interface (awesome having only a 2 pixel border with always on top setting to watch something while browsing the net at the same time).

LOST: The Final Season
They went with the two universe setting in Fringe (as far as we know only two universes), so I figured they might be doing the same thing here. Oh and who thought it was cool they got Matt Parkman as pilot again?

The Official PS3 Thread
Got the God of War collection in the mail today. Going to be a while before I get to it though.

New computer time
Build went well. Took a while, had some problems with my case not being set up too well. Basically I am stuck with just having one hard drive in it, which I can deal with. The other four are going to get crammed into my media center/comic server. Windows 7 is the easiest to install OS that I have ever done. Hell, I never even needed to update any drivers (though I did update my graphics card drivers). EDIT: My score according to Windows 7 (on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9 for some reason): Processor: 7.3 Memory: 7.5 Graphics: 7.3 Gaming Graphics 7.3 Hard disk: 5.9 EDIT2: Oh and I also threw in one of my hard drives that is most frequently used. There was no way to fit it into an existing slot (2 rails go up and down, can fit 6 hard drives and 2 memory card/floppy disk), but it was in an expansion slot in my old PC so I just took the entire expansion out and set it next to one of the rails. It actually fit snugly there even though I couldn't screw it in any way. Put a piece of cardboard in there to prevent rattling, working out pretty well so far.

network issues
You could also try adding an OpenDNS or GoogleDNS server instead of your ISP's, if you want to see if that is the problem. However some home router/switches just suck. I haven't had too much experience with DLink, but all that I did was bad. I have a LinkSYS and it has problems every now and then but is good for the most part.

LOST: The Final Season
Lets go ahead and forgo hide tags for current episodes, if you are discussing a spoiler you heard about a future episode leave it hide tags. Are we sure the flashes to the "no crash" story aren't as real as them still being on an island? It seems to me we may have a multi-universe thing going on.

My Dad is an [wagon]
Well going outside isn't a bad idea, even if you want to stay in there are still a [cabbage] ton of games that aren't first person shooters. Or if you want to stay inside read a book, it actually might be a good idea to read a good war book with lots of guns and killing to see where your dad is coming from. Now of course there is no harm in playing FPS, but it is simulating killing people and can be disturbing for people who don't understand games.

My Dad is an [wagon]
Then don't play them. I was grounded when I was 18 (was actually grounded the months before and after my 18th birthday) and I suffered through it because I was still living at home. At this point you can move out and do whatever you wish, or stay there and not play FPS.

Songs that get stuck in your head.
I've had The Clash - Rock the Casbah in my head for a while now, I can't remember why.

TVTropes
It comes up occasionally in topics here. I've read a few things on there over the years, usually when someone links to a specific article.

What movie(s) did you last see?
Yeah they are tons of fun even if they aren't what you would consider to be good movies. Speaking of which: Taken - Fairly ridiculous plot, but it is still kick [wagon].

The Expendables
Heh, I guess not. No one (except people on the set/doctors) actually knew about it until a few weeks ago, long after shooting had finished.
