Runescape: teamplay vs lone adventurer
dargonhuman replied to dutchdreams's topic in General Discussion
I, too, prefer solo gameplay to team-based, mostly because I'm an anti-social person with strong self-dependant tendencies. I've tried some of the team-based content on RS, mostly CW and PC, and grew bored or frustrated with both quickly because I was relying too much on my team mates to accomplish the task set before us. I doubt I'll be trying BA at anytime because of this. Personally, I get a little disappointed when I hear a new update requires some kind of team-based aspect, as I don't do well in teams. Heck, it took me forever just to do Shield of Arrav because I couldn't find anyone reliable enough to do it with. In the end, I almost had to drop-trade the shield half to myself. I didn't of course, but I did give it some serious thought. What I'd like to see regarding team-based features are features that can be effectively done by one person, but can optionally be done as a team. As an example, the part of the Elemental Workshop 2 quest where you have to prime the metal bar can be done by one person, but if it had a team-based aspect, where every person did one job (i.e. one person worked the lever to move the cart to the next station, one person operated the crane, one person operated the stamper, etc.), then we could make the primed bars quicker through less running back and forth, thus increasing the reward to the team (faster bar priming = more primed bars for energizing). I think those kind of solo/team features would keep the teamplayers happy without denying solo players the advantages those features presented. -
Winning really is no fun at all , who could possibly want an easy 2 tickets? Winning isn't everything. If the round is fun, I don't care if I win or lose. On the other hand, if the game gets boring, like when people hold their own flags, I'll quit the game, even if I am on the winning side (I've quit more games where I was winning than losing because of this). Also, you can cheat and still not break any rules. Cheat codes on other games may be programmed in to the game, and thus "allowed" by the programmers, but you're still cheating by using them. As far as I'm concerned, holding your own flag in cw is the same as activating God Mode or No Clip on Half Life. Yes, you can do it and it makes the game a lot easier, but it also makes the game far more boring.
-
The fact is, cheating is cheating, plain and simple. You can justify it however you want, but anything that gives you an unfair advantage (and holding your own flag while being surrounded by 3/4 of your team is unfair, no two ways about it) is cheating. The only thing being organized means is that there are more cheaters one one team than the other. Again, I say, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should, and it definitely doesn't make it right. Just because I can close the doors to the stores and annoy a bunch of people doesn't mean I should do that, because it's not right. Just because I can claim to be a disaster victim and get a bunch of money from the government doesn't mean I should. Just because you can pick up your own flag and cheat your way to victory doesn't mean you should. You can bandy about terms like "strategy" and "organized" to try and justify yourself, but in the end you're still a cheater who used underhanded and dishonest means to win.
-
False; just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. It ruins the fun for everyone else. I'm of the opinion that it's better to lose fairly than to win unfairly. I don't mind losing to a superior opponent because my skills weren't up to snuff. I do mind losing to a superior opponent because I weasled my way out of a fair contest. Holding your own flag in cw is cheating because you've eliminated any chance for the opposing team to score. Just because one or two morons on their team screwed up, it doesn't mean the entire team has to suffer for that. If given a chance, other team members could do far better, but by holding your own flag, you've taken away that chance, and any chance for a fair fight. It'd be like in Baseball if the first baseman caught the ball, then just held onto it for the rest of the inning; the at-bat team wouldn't have a chance to score any runs because the pitcher would have nothing to throw at the next batter, and even if he did, the first baseman would be guaranteed to get the batter out because 1) he's got the ball, and 2) he's already at the base, whereas the batter has to run the 40-or-so feet to get there. It'd be a completely one-sided match, which is what happens in cw. I agree with the people who say you should only be able to hold your own flag for a set time. Even better would be if it worked like in Unreal Tournament, where your flag is auto-returned as soon as you touch it, and you only have five minutes to carry the enemy flag to prevent Zammy "spies" from joining the Sara team to hold the Zammy flag and vice versa.

If they made it sweet enough of a deal, people would go. Look at the Hobgoblin Mine; yes, there are other safer sources of addy and mith but the hob mine is the most abundant source for these materials, thus making the mine very attractive. There are days when there's at least one person in the mine on almost every world, and often more than that. If something similar were done for other resources like trees, and the potential rewards were as sweet, I'm sure there'd be plenty of players willing to take the risk. Also, level 30 would be a fairly reasonable place to put a smallish grove of Yews; it might not be far to run and tele, but if you put it in or above a multi-way combat area, that would be offset. After all, if you're being chased by a bunch of rangers and mages who are backup for a couple pure meleers, there's no guarantee you're going to get out of the multi-way zone alive.

That happens to me a lot; usually, just clicking Refresh/Reload fixes the problem. If that doesn't work, try again later. No clue why that happens, though.
-
arch, please tell me you're being sarcastic. What I hate about updates that let us get expensive items easier is when a hundred wannabe merchanters immediately jump on the "Oh noes, pricez r guna dropzz!!!1!!1!eleventyone!! Teh econemie is guna colapz!!" Real merchants with legitimate merchant skills can and do find ways of making up the loss of income in other areas. Besides which, there's waaay too many gold coins flowing through the economy, so the drop of a few thousand gp on a single item that's worth a few million isn't going to make any kind of significant difference to the economy in the long run. If the economy crashed every time an expensive item dropped in price, the economy would be crashing two or three times a month for the last three years. Since that hasn't happened, I don't think getting d chains from BA queens is going to be the doom of the RS economy. It would take something far more catastrophic, like deleting p-hats or making them untradeable.

What I hate about being PK'd ... other than dying ...
dargonhuman replied to Forum_User's topic in Rants
I hate when I'm mining and a guy who's obviously been pking says "peace". Yah, right, I know you're just biding your time to get my inventory full of ores, you're not that slick, Mr. "sent2lumb"* or whatever your idiotic Pker name is. *Not an actual name (that I know of). Just made it up. -
Now that's a good idea. I never did understand why my character couldn't know what herb he was looking at because of his level. Just because I have no idea how to read or write html myself (well, beyond the simple forum effects...), it doesn't mean I can't recognize html when I see it. Same thing should hold true for herbs; just because my character doesn't know how to mix an herb into a potion doesn't mean he can't tell the difference between Toadflax and Irit, especially if he's already grown those particular herbs with Farming.
-
I can't help but ask, why? Seeds stack, so 1m potato seeds would only take 1 inventory space, and they've already got vegetable sacks and fruit baskets that essentially serve the same function for allotments. Granted, hops, berries, herbs, flowers and other types of farming products don't have that option, but really, they usually don't produce enough to matter. But anyway, I don't really think there's a pressing need for any of these; it's already too easy to get exp in most of those skills. The challenges and obstacles that do exist are there to balance the rewards.
-
Not good enough; I've watched crops die on me while trying to navigate all those dialogue screens (then re-navigate them because of one misclick...) just to get to the plant cure option, and by then buying it was a moot point. I support this idea.
-
Actually, they don't do it anymore, which indicates it was a glitch JAgex fixed. And who seriously trains on imps, anyway? The only reason I was out there long enough to notice that bug was because I was looking for beads for the quest. If the hellcat pics are fakes, they're very, very good fakes, especially to get two angles like that. I believe they're real enough.

Just because your computer's not lagging, it doesn't mean theirs isn't. So, it probably is lag, just not on your end. Anyway, it happens to me all the time. Like zaaps1 said, just don't move your stuff around when you need to use it.

How about a REAL bot-stopper JAGeX?
dargonhuman replied to DeathSpray's topic in RuneScape Suggestions
No, I'm selenium-based, and I find that question offensive. But, as for the idea, ehh, it's too easy to get around, like munchkinmage said. -
Bad idea, mostly because of what zaaps1 said. Why? Because, you can already buy white knight armor, but to do so you must first finish two quests, then kill a ton of black knights to earn the right to wear it. As for the other stuff, it'd probably be like Goblin Armor; something you can pick up, but can't use because you're the wrong species/class/etc.
-
They've already got something similar to this in the game. It's called Pest Control, and with PC, you can raise your Prayer to 99 without touching a bone. Very much a form of buyable xp. And you know what? The effect on the community has been nearly disastrous. Before PC was released, acheiving a combat level of over 100 was something to be respected for, getting a 126 meant you were almost god-like in RS. More importantly, though, was the fact that it took time and dedication to get there, which meant that by the end of the journey, the player should have developed quite a bit of maturity and discipline, which most did as was reflected in the kind respectful way they interacted with their fellow players. Now, most 100+ players are a bunch of arrogant jerks who think a few numbers make them better than everyone, and all because they spent a few weeks buying their levels with PC Points. If that option were extended to all skills, we'd see the end of the RS community as we know it, and probably the end of RS as a game.

That's the only angle and position Spinners look like Metroids, every other way, they look just like jellyfish.
-
Hmm, I think I know what happened. Did you use the hyperdrive to get here or just the light d... Whoops, been watching too much Red vs Blue there... Possibly what happened is the cat got stuck behind something, then when it popped back next to him, it somehow got stuck in the larder. I remember a similar glitch a while ago where the Imps on Karamja Volcano would teleport to a tiny little island in the middle of the lava, making it impossible for meleers to get at them.

look st what ur friends r doing look inside!
dargonhuman replied to The_Gabe's topic in RuneScape Suggestions
The biggest problem I see with this is server strain, which as others have pointed out, would mean huge lag for everyone. Have a way to block viewing requests (simlar to the current public/private/trade filters), and this might actually be useful. I can't count the number of times I couldn't find friends through PM because they didn't know where they were (I'm not kidding, one guy was on White Wolf Mountain - fighting white wolves - and thought he was on Ice Mountain; I was halfway from Falador to the Black Knight fortress when he said he was fighting the wolves.) So there is a use for it, but the biggest problem I see is lag from server strain. -
That's not true; I've put Mods on my Ignore list and didn't hear from them again. Anything they've already said will stay in the chat window, but whatever else is said afterward will not show up.
-
Yeah...just like they thought Pure Ess through thoroughly before putting that in. Suuuure. Pest Control may have sounded good on the drawing board, but in practice, it's hurting the RS community more than it's benifiting it by churning out dozens of new, immature 126's every week. Experience is more than the number of points you get for bashing monster with your sword; real experience is what happens when you actually have to work for something - and risk losing that something - rather than have it all handed to you in a nice safe box. A lvl 70 cap on PC would be wonderful, but probably not enough; in the Rants forum, there's another thread discussing the flaws of PC, and one of the suggestions is that instead of being paid gp to play PC, it should cost gp to play PC. Having an entrance fee coupled with a level cap would solve many of the so-called "PC product" problems by forcing PC players to actually step out of the Void Knight outpost and find other training options to get that illustrious 99 skill or 126 combat level, and maybe in the process, would let them get enough experience to gain a Maturity lvl or two.
-
No way. Two days after releasing that, Jagex might as well just bump everyone's skills to 99, since that's about as long as it would take the average player to max out they're favorite skill. No, it'd make smithing way too easy. For every reward, there needs to be a cost. The reward for getting 69 smithing is that you need more coal and time to make the bars. The tradeoff is the EXP and gp rewards are higher. Besides which, if you're looking for a magical alternative to running to a furnace and back hundreds of times, just get your Magic up to SuperHeat, get a bunch of Natures and a fire staff and do all your smelting in the bank. As for the other skills, well, none of them need this spell. Most trees are close enough to banks that it's a moot point, and fishing, while not the most interesting skill in RS, is still plenty easy enough as it is, yes, even in f2p. Sail to Karamja, get an inventory of whatever, tele to Falador, repeat. I don't even want to think about what this would do to the rune/pure ess miners. No, no 1k times no!
-
The danger is, the new owners could be even more greedy and less caring than Jagex and do stupid things like get rid of f2p or make rares tradeable only for members.
-
If you think that's funny, in Zanaris (the "Lost City"), the mill is powered by a cow on a similar, but larger, wheel. Another thing that tickled me was the fact that after doing the Animal Magnetism quest, you can get some extra Undead Chickens and wield them. Undead Chickens have similar stats to rubber ones, that is, severely negative.

Is this a bug? I can't figure it out...
dargonhuman replied to wakka102's topic in General Discussion
i think the same thing as shade1234 which is very annoying from another player That can't be it, because I've traded dozens of people with my Trade filter set to Off, and they've all been able to trade with me regardless. It's more likely a lag issue related to the server strain like a couple of other people said, especially since others have fixed it by "refreshing" the map section.
