Personally, I'd just get the spell. You never know when it could come in handy. Plus, if you are gonna keep training there, I'd say it would help with graveyard quite a bit. However, this is all based upon my opinion purely, and not facts, as I don't have the spell (I gave up trying to get it once I discovered how much I hate the graveyard).

Well, when I did, I just had a bunch of stews on me, along with my kitten, talked to his mum, went into basement, told him about the suttf, then killed rats.. Not sure what the problem is.

It's dependant upon your level. Try it out for half an hour or an hour and see.

Try flesh crawlers in SoS for range. There's hiding spots in one place at least. For mage, alch, or if you want to use combat but want to also have it cheap-ish, use the basic combat spells.

Basically, throw out all quest items. That's a great start. I'd recommend buying a rare [but that has nothing to do with organizing the bank]. Throw out holiday items and things that you dont use [such as your beers. You may as well keep the 'rarer' ones, i.e., the one's you can't buy in a store, but throw out your dwarf stouts, etc.] Then once you've cleared it out, put everything in groups, such as runecrafting, crafting, combat, etc. That's basically it.
