  1. Zonor's advice seemed pretty good to me, and he seemed to have a firm grasp of the situation, IMO. :D Two years isn't THAT huge a difference at your age - certainly a doable relationship. I agree with what many others have said - if you actually like her, and don't just want to take advantage of her, then go for it. It might work out, you never know, and you might just enjoy the time together while you have it :D But, if it's a personal thing and you just really don't feel comfortable dating someone younger, that's cool too, and totally your call.
  2. I agree with dusqi. Whether a person feels slightly vs. passionately about an issue shouldn't necessarily matter, because it's still one vote, either way. You shouldn't have to make a big show of your opinion for it to count. A representative should do just that - represent people - and thus it is zir (aka his/her) OWN responsibility to seek out the opinions of zir constituents.
  3. They're not entirely worthless when they're sent to the government, because they count and then take into consideration the raw number of people who send in either a letter or sign a petition in support or against any specific issue. It helps them keep track of public opinion, in a way, or at least an important sector of opinion, since these are people who are also often active in politics.

    A+20=4*B B/2=D C=3*A D*C=5 I solved (I think :D) it with two different methods of substitution and both came down to the quadratic equation, and all will, unfortunately, because of the way its set up with three equations defining them as multiples of each other, and the last equation involving an addition with an extra term of 20. Anyway, this seems like a messier problem than they'd be likely to give you - are you sure it's right? Mmm. C=3A so D*3A=5 so D=5/(3A) so B/2=5/(3A) so B=5/(6A) SO A+20 = 4*(5/(6A)) = 10/(3A) 3A^2 + 60A - 10 = 0 Then you can realize it's not solvable by the guess'n'check method, so you complete the square (or use quadratic equation.) A^2 + 20A -10/3 = 0 A^2 + 20 A = 10/3 (A+10)^2 = 10/3 + 100 = 44/3 (A+10) = + or - (44/3)^(1/2) A = + or - (44/3)^(1/2) - 10 Then C = 3A so C = + or - (3(44/3)^(1/2)) - 30 and since D*C = 5, D = 5/C, so D= 5 /{+ or - [3(44/3)^(1/2)] - 30} So, another way of solving it. A = 4B-20 C = 12B-60 12BD-60D=5 B=2D 24D^2 - 60D - 5 = 0 D^2 - (5/2)D - 5/24 = 0 D^2 - (5/2)D = 5/24 (D-(5/4))^2 = 5/24 + (25/16) = 85/48 D - (5/4) = + or - (85/48)^(1/2) D = + or - (85/48)^(1/2) + (5/4) Since these two solutions don't appear to jive, it means I've done something wrong somewhere and you can't rely on anything I've said :D Erm... sorry :x
  5. Yeah, exactly. The situation sounds really frustrating and it reminds me why I'd be awful at that kind of job. :x But, yeah, unfortunately... you are providing a service and in these cases the customer is always right and you have to put up with the idiocy of people. Ugh, that sucks, sorry :(

Good job, Ohio :D Sigh, I don't know about you, but college breaks are way too long and i can't wait to get back to school  But snow days were certainly appreciated in high school :D
  7. I'm another "root" but "rowter". Weird. I'm from the US, NYC area. I don't think the "New York" accent is that easy to differentiate from others at all. Maybe that's because I don't believe I have an accent, but mm... :D (The British do use "like" a lot at the end of sentences; it was interesting. I am often told that I have a Canadian accent because I apparently pronounce about aboot.)
  8. Lately I've been really like yellow :D Though many shades of blue are nice too. Bright pink is fun in clothing :P Forum style is, of course, SubBlack, however ;) :D
  9. No, because you're starting with the premise that t = a + b. It doesn't matter if a and b are less than t; that would be part of the premise. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean that, because either a could be negative and b positive, or vice versa, making t a smaller number than one of them.
  10. Yeah, it's that square root towards the end. Or, more accurately, the squaring in the first place. If you take one of the square roots to be the negative square root, then: (a - t/2)^2 = (-b + t/2)^2 so (a - t/2) = (-b +t/2) so a+b = t/2 + t/2 = t And, as you would have guessed, t = a + b is simply the premise you started with. When you square anything, as you did earlier on in the problem, you get a second alternate possible answer that may or may not exist. You have to check to make sure it's right. In this case, that's what leads you to the false conclusion that a=b.
  11. Ahaha, seriously, if I had a dime for everytime someone said to me on New Year's Day, "Oh man, I have the BIGGEST hangover, last night was crazy"... I could buy a sandwich or something.

I don't think there are millions in time square. I don't think they'd fit :P Thousands seems more likely? :P I was in Times Square earlier in the day, around 6 pm, but the police and restrictions got crazy so we decided to get out of the area. :D

In high school, I loved my teachers but hated the work and always wanted vacations to last forever. I'd dread going back. Now that I'm in uni though, I just miss being there. I wish vacation didn't last so long. I can't wait to go back. Though I'm looking forward to going to England in a few days :D

I was surprised he went on air. It was tough to understand him. I'm sorry he had a stroke, but a newscaster should be audible and articulate by definition...
  15. Why is there no reason to save energy? no reason for me the save energy, i pay $10 into my familys 30 or 40 dollar a month electric bill, if i conserve ill still be paying 10. thats why i have had my computer on for about 70 of the past 72 hours, and leave my satelite/stereo/dvd on and just turn on the tv when i want to watch something. There's the environmental aspect as well as the monetary aspect :D
  16. At my old high school, I felt bad turning off the light, because what if you walk in and it's dark and you can't find the switch and you have to pee? It's just a bad situation and it's totally happened to me :P At my uni, all the bathrooms have motion sensor lights, that go on automatically when you walk in, and shut off where there hasn't been any movement for a while :D Brilliant :D Yay for environmentalists who pressure the administration ;D
  17. Yeah, my floor (in my dorm) is so ridiculously alcohol ridden. For reading week (the week before finals when you have nothing to do, supposedly so that you can study) they went out on Monday and bought $300 worth of alcohol to last them the week. They finished it. But neither my roommate nor I drink, and we're like ALWAYS together, so it's all good :D

I speak English mostly fluently ;) :D. I took six years of Spanish, but I'm pretty bad at it, especially when they're talking fast.. :x I can read Hebrew writing out loud, but I have no idea what most of it means. I'd like to learn Yiddish and Dutch, though :D
  19. Some people are naturally inhibited, and getting "drunk" tends to relieve these inhibitions. I have more respect for people who let go of most nonessential inhibitions in their daily life (and especially at parties) without getting drunk. You can go to a party, let back and relax, without damaging your liver and/or accidentally sleeping with someone who's ridiculously bad-looking.
  20. thank you!, i hate it when people say American language.. that really makes me feel pissed off... i find it easy to type full sentances and paragraphs in full english cuz it was a very big part of my english class and i was the fastest typer.. and im sure like many people here im from england ...Right. Now he only needs to work on capitalization and punctuation. ^.^ And spelling too, sentance? :P It's okay, love you anyway terley :D

I know I should say some time long ago full of interesting and educational history... but really, I'd just want to go back to the sixties and chill with the hippies. :D
  22. If the exam results turn out to be very poor, then (assuming it was still a good test in that the variables it tested were intended - it covered the proper range of material) it was just difficult; if no one did well, then you can still get an idea of who did the best compared to everyone else, which is really the important thing.
  23. There's a movement nationally (in the US) to do away with much standardized testing because it doesn't highlight individual strengths and merely tests a few arbitrary variables. There's also a trend in thought about "gifted education" that every student is gifted in some way or another, and just because a student is more naturally-intelligent-in-logic-and-such, they shouldn't recieve extra enrichment or advancement. I think that's stupid. Standardized tests are about the best measure we have of testing intelligence and other things across various groups. It's the best way we have of being able to quickly gauge someone's general intelligence with a single number - and though this may seem demeaning, it's absolutely necessary to stereotype people in certain situations... such as college admissions. It doesn't tell you everything about a person's intelligence, but the SATs for example certainly tell you something - and something very different from mere GPA or even class rank. Some people are naturally more intelligent than others. Those who aren't as intelligent deserve special enrichment, and those who are more intelligent deserve special enrichment. Hey, kids in the middle could use some special enrichment, too! But first you need to assess this, and have a standard and nonsubjective means of doing so. Plus, it's useful for looking at someone within the context of their surroundings, and for assessing the context of surroundings. For example, a school with an average SAT score of 1250 versus a school with an average SAT score of 850 are clearly different environments for a student to grow up in... and a student with a score of 1550 at the first school is outstanding, and a student with a score of 1250 at the second is outstanding.
  24. Ah, I do that, sometimes. It draws emphasis to the urgency of the situation, and highlights that it's a ?! - you want an answer now. It's not just a question mark and it's not just an exclamation point. It works if you're asking something urgently... or angrily. :P :D
  25. Rizla may think he has a good life, doing some drugs, getting some girls, having a job... but his runescape player is only level 52! Point and laugh! But not really, because he's good looking.
