    TThat was ADORABLE :D
  2. If he was spitting out the right side, there'd still be a lane of traffic between the kid and the tree branch. Either way it's pretty much unfeasable. (note that the illustration is NOT on a one-lane road) Sorry, I meant a one-lane-per-direction road. Just, it's feasible that the bus could have changed into the right hand lane while the kid was still leaning out the window. I don't know, I just don't think it's nice to discredit people out of hand.
  3. Surely there are windows on both sides of the bus? Yeah, but you don't drive on the left side of the road. Think about it. He could have been leaning out of a window on the right...? Who says it's a one-lane road? Like, no offense, but how does no one notice that possibility? I'm sorry that you had to witness this, assuming you really did. :(
  4. Surely there are windows on both sides of the bus?
  5. Bleh, Stony Brook is an amazing value school. When it comes to sciences, it's better than the schools you listed. It's easily one of the top SUNY schools. And Stony Brook Honors is very respectable. Also, if you like big schools, Stony Brook is the school for you. I don't know if you've ever been there, but it's HUGE. It's like it's own town. Literally, you don't ever have to leave if you don't want to, as it's got basically any store you need on campus. There are even shuttle buses to take you from class to class. Hell, it's even got it's own LIRR stop, so access to the city is very easy. About 90 minutes from Stony Brook to Penn Station. :P UB and Binghamton are both good schools though. From all the tense changes in your post, I'm still not sure if you're in college or applying to them. You keep switching from the past to the future. Out of curiosity, where in New York are you? Past tense is because I applied already. I was accepted. And now, i'm chosing schools. Binghamton is one of the top ranked in SUNY. But Stonybrook is my top choice though because it has a beautiful campus. I live in Manhattan, New York City. A lot of people say Stony Brook isn't that good because it's like a party school. I have a few friends there. I'm majoring in mechanical engineering, so Stonybrook is the best for that. Polytechnic University is my second choice because it's in brooklyn and also a top ranked private school. Also they have a table tennis team, so that gives them an edge. You live in Manhattan? Where in Manhattan? :D (I'm a wannabe NYCer)

I'm a huge, huge paris fan :D The Chris dude is good too - and the gorgeous and fantastic McPhee girl. Those are my three favourites :D (Pickler is good too, don't worry :P)
  7. Ohh, I really liked Carleton if I hadn't gotten into my first choice last year :D (Wesleyan) Awesome job everyone :D Tomato, I'm so happy for you :D!!! And Case Western is tough, man :D Sidenote: I'm a probable math major. You'd be amazed how amazing math can be, man :D
  8. This is making me REALLY WANT TO PLAY FF9 :D Maybe this summer >.>
  9. Sadly, that's not true in American schools. Schools are "in loco parentus" - they take the place of the parents and have authority similar to that of parents.
  10. When you try to say things defensively to protect yourself, like "I just go to hang out with my friend" makes you seem less interested, which is the opposite of what you want!! You want to make it seem like you're a possible option for her - you never know, SHE might make a move :D Or at least be more willing to give little "hints" to you. From the information we have, there's really little that can be said... Talking and honesty is better than not, so you may as well go for it, I think. Tell her that if her friend is making her get a date to the dance... you'll be kind enough to volunteer to go with her! :D And see how she reacts to that. It looks to me that, by her mentioning the dance and asking if you were going in the first place, yes, she may be trying to ascertain whether you're interested or not. A sidenote: I think it's best at this time to not really ask your mom for advice on this type of issue. Don't get me wrong, it's great to have really close relationships with your parents - but they're very biased when it comes to you, their child. I'm really close and honest with my mom, but I've learned in recent years that I can't really rely on her for this sort of advice :P
  11. Oh man!! If you stir fry them with a little bit of soy sauce, and cook 'em well so the edges are almost slightly burnt, they're fantastic! Mmmm. And rotundra87, I think I love you. If you actually asked me for my favourite food, I think I'd have to say cheesecake, because in taste, it clearly beats out broccoli. Especially those ones at The Cheesecake Factory that make you wonder if there is a heaven. I usually eat half of them, then take them home, and relive the experience the next morning :D
  12. Okay, I got really excited when I saw the post about the broccoli awards, because I thought for a moment that it would honor the wonder that is broccoli :D Think about it: Broccoli is one of the most nutricious foods around. (Source: http://discworld.atuin.net/lpc/links/cabbage/info/broccoli_nutrition.html) It has ridiculous amounts of protein and dietary fiber, both difficult to acquire in your diet, as well as Vitamin C. And then it has substantial amounts of calcium, vitamin A, and iron! And very little fat (especially saturated fat). Meanwhile, it tastes DELICIOUS. It is also so well designed; the leafy end soaks up sauce very well, so it picks up flavour easily. And the stalky end is great for dipping. If I were a scientist asked to design the perfect food, broccoli would come close to being it. ... On that note, what are y'all's favourite foods? :D (Mods, hope this isn't spammy - if you feel it is, feel free to delete :D Not that you'd need my permission, but y'know.)
  13. But then, if the woman didn't want the baby the slightest bit, she shouldn't have been having sex either, right? I don't believe that, but that's just going by your argument. Edit: GhostRanger beat me to it :D I don't even need to post in this post, GhostRanger has totes got me covered :D
  14. As you know, I go to a very liberal school which is kind of its own little bubble. We don't have evangelists here. It's a self-segregated bubble... perhaps there isn't as great a diversity of opinion as there could be, but it's nice to live in an area with like-minded people, when I'm already (relatively) set in my opinions. There have been many experimental utopias in the past, so the Catholic community has precedent - just in America, some examples include the Rappites, the Shakers, the Amana community, the Oneida community, the Mormons, Owen's socialist free love atheist colony, Fourier's socialist colony. The first two were highly religious-based, while the Oneida community invovled large amounts of promiscuous sex, because they believed every woman was married to every man. The Mormons ran into trouble with the US government (and the American public) because they believed in polygamy, which was illegal under national laws. Utopian communities such as these are communities of people with similar beliefs, which is fundamentally different than allowing individuals to practice their own beliefs privately. Allowing individuals to form a community if they wish should surely be allowed.
  15. Mercifull, why is the law illegal? If the state passes it into law, and most people in the state support it, surely it should be allowed to stand. The amendments in certain states "defining marriage" make me sick, but I understand that those states had the right to make them. And since I don't live in those states, it's not up to me to decide what their laws are. 1) No, I believe it's wrong because murder should not be legal. It is murder because after six weeks or so (before which almost no abortions occur), the fetus has a developed nervous system. 2) Yes, I think the government has the burden of inflicting certain basic laws on the people - ie. no murder. 3) I agree that freedom from religious persecution is very important. 4) No :P
  16. Well, from the (american) National Libertarian Party website, their ideals are individual freedom and sovereignty: However, most libertarians I've encountered still tend to think within the bounds of national identity and patriotism. You're right, I wouldn't go so far as to say they believe in national sovereignty... but they certainly believe in the right of the nation to act in war and to have basic laws (ie. no murder). An example of how their ideas are often tied strongly to national identity, from their website: Still, I'd vote libertarian 8)
  17. Where do you get the idea that libertarians feel the need to rely on a nationalist government? Most libertarians I know are for minimalist government in all areas. People who want to rely on big government are 'statists' and they're the antithesis to libertarian ideals. Yeah - but the main difference separating libertarians from anarchists is that though they have the same basic principle (as little government as possible), libertarians are too scared to consider actually allowing anything outside the basic national government rules, though they think those should be as minimal as possible. They'd never consider letting a community actually govern itself without being subject to a higher sovereign power.
  18. I'm a big fan of people being able to create their own "utopian" town if they so want to, even if I disagree with the way it's run. It would be an interesting experiment. I don't like how Jeb Bush called it a good example of the merging of faith and citizenship, because that makes it sound like he's a fan of the ideas the Catholic town is based on a large scale, but in theory, I'd like if people could create their own legal commune or whatever the hell they wanted. I mean, that's the ultimate anarchist ideal - self government - and if libertarians weren't so scared and felt they had to rely on a nationalist government, they'd support it, too, being the ultimate in freedom.
  19. ? I'm jewish, but I don't understand how that's very relevant :P ...Aside from saying HAPPY PURIM! :D
  20. Students s hould think about it this way: When someone graduates from college with a major in mathematics, they rarely become teachers, because they make so much more money from other jobs they get recruited for. Thus there is a lack of good math teachers out there! (I hope to be a math teacher eventually, too :D)
  21. I really am not a fan of the sleeping pills thing - I know some friends who have been taking them for insomnia, and it really just messes them up. They don't have REM sleep and one of them started to hallucinate during the day and they don't feel like they've been sleeping at all in the morning. If all else fails, you can go to it, but IMO it should really be a last resort. Yeah - the best thing to do is make sure you do relaxing things in the little while before you go to bed. Being on the computer is NOT included in that - that makes it more difficult to sleep. Reading or just listening to quiet music for about half an hour before sleeping is the generally accepted best way to do this.
  22. I was quite surprised he used the phrase "evil empire." Now that's a loaded couple of words.
  23. Yeah, don't feel like just because you made the post, you can't ever stop by again :D Hope your internet works out and all... have a good life :D See you around :D
