I don't think you can die directly because of lack of sleep. You will just eventually fall asleep, no matter how hard you try not to. Yeah after about 6-7 days of sleep deprivation your body will just collapse of sheer exhaustion, I don't think you can actually die.

You should try and talk to your dad more and emphasise with him- encourage him to go to AA meetings etc, thats what my dad did and he hasn't been drinking for like 14 years \ Then again, that was after he divorced my mum...so it depends on your mums tolerance of these things.
