AIDS Vaccine

Recommended Posts

My biology teacher told my class today that she heard of a University that successfully created a vaccine for the virus. She told us that the article said it should, if all goes well, be ready for circulation in the next two years. I'm not sure if this is old news or if it's completely new. It may even be false. I just thought I would point it out.

its probably those people had a theory about a vaccine for it otherwise if they really had a cure then it would be the headline of every newspaper article in the world. plus the FDA wouldn't approve of it for no reason at all

There is a difference between a vaccine and a cure. One cures, the other prevents. (I.e. If small pox was still around and you were given the small pox vaccine after you had it, nothing would happen).

I know a Canadian university is working on a vaccine, not sure if it was compleat though. Might be.The reason it wouldnt be in headlines is that it is such a big thing, they cant say anything right now or they might make too much of a hype if it doesn't work out properly.

I've learned to stop getting excited over scientific advancements or inventions I hear on the news or TV. Whenever you hear that it's being worked on or that it should be ready in x many years, you never hear about it again. I have no idea why, but it's just irritating getting your hopes up for something time and time again to hear nothing of it again.

I did some searching and figured the place she got it from was probably a science magazine. Anyway, this quote is from Science Journal.

High-quality statistical analyses allow tracking of HIV evasion of the host immune response through epitope mutations and suggest refined strategies for vaccine development.

Apparently I misunderstood her or she misunderstood the magazine. I can't view the full article because you have to be a member but the quote gives the basics. It's still good news.

The AIDS virus changes/mutates too fast for humans, so far, to develop a vaccine for it.

To get a cure or vaccine for it, we must identify "exactly" what strain of AIDS virus we are dealing with, and then give the cure.

Unfortunately, we have no way to completely kill viruses, we can slow the growth with anti-virals though, so we're quite a while away from an cold, much less an AIDS cure/vaccine.

There are different strains of AIDS? I throught it was simply advanced HIV. Is it like the flu?

:? Ya,i thought there was only one strand too. I would like a source that is no wikipedia.

EDit: As far as i know, AIDS is incurable, just because it is the destruction of the immune system. HIV on the other hand is the actual virus which attacks and kills the immune system.

Good point, since most vaccines are just weakened or dead viruses that trick the immune system into producing antibodies, that dosen't really make anything better if you have an incredibly weakened immune system.

Is this a vaccine or a cure we are discussing here? A vaccine would be feasible if there was only one stran (have to look into that), but I don't feel the same about a cure.

Theres a vaccine for every illness, brah.

I believe they don't put them out, for population control is necessary

Lets hope you get it so we can have less [developmentally delayed]s in the world.

This would be all over the news if it were true, and I ain't heard a thing, so...

I have heard before, though...About something that you can take immediately after contact (within a few days I think) with the virus and it will wipe it out of your body...Stops it from replicating somehow, or something. I don't know how true that is, though, because if they could stop it from replicating at an early stage, you'd think they could stop it at later stages by now, too.

But usually you don't even know you have it until a while after contracting it, while this requires you to take it right after contracting the disease, if i understand properly.

Yea, it'd obviously be for, like...If you were a doctor working on an AIDS patient and cut yourself and knew you could be infected, or something.

But like I said, I don't know if this stuff even exists, I've just read about something like it once. Coulda' been fake. :P

Actually, through Gene Therapy the cure of genetic disorders aren't too far away. Certain forms of genetic disorders like Muscular Dystrophy have already been cured in hamsters using Gene Therapy.

On a side note, I would like to point out that:

A) A cure is far different from a vaccine.

B) I don't think the government would be pouring money into creating a vaccine if it were impossible.

Well so far they have donated billions and yet to find a cure. Not in vain though, i'm sure they will find a cure someday.

My bad. I confused AIDS with HIV.

This statement still applies, except change AIDS to HIV.

I read in a book it's possible to cure HIV. Once you get infected, you take the prescription for HIV patients, if given soon enough, it can slow down the replication of HIV and your body's immune system will be able to wipe out all the HIV before it hides in your cells, or at least give a damn good start in the war.

Remember, soon enough is usually when you are exposed(not sure about the time period), so if you take it like a week or two later, you're stuck with it.

Still not sure if this'll actually work.

Some African King announced the other day he could cure aids. Turned out it was all voodoo magic and didn't work at all. :(

Well...Yea.

He was giving them Banana's and herbs and molesting them with a Koran. Not exactly an AIDS cure. :)

He managed to convince a lot of people though. Its sad that theres still parts of africa that are living so far back in the past of magic and mystery. They will never pull out of poverty with people like that leading them.
