The great big freeware thread

All things free and fun in this thread. A few quick rules to prevent this from getting locked:

  • [*:2hntzn1h]Freeware only - Freeware being copyrighted games that are free to download and use for an unlimited time.

    [*:2hntzn1h]No shareware/abandonware/pirated software

[*:2hntzn1h]Don't just post a link, add a quick description, and a screenshot or two

That about covers it...

So without further ado:

The DaFoe quadrilogy: Four old school adventure games telling a tale that starts with a simple catburglary but end with a trail of bodies spanning several centuries. Although these games look and play like the DOS adventures of yore, they can be played in Windows without any need of emulators or slowdown software.

Note that, like most games dealing with psycho killers, the scenes in these games can be quite graphic at times. If you don't like dismembered torsos rolling out from behind panels in the wall and flayed bodies nailed to doors rendered in classic 320x240 DOS graphics, don't bother downloading these games.

5 Days a Stranger: A cat burglar breaks into a supposedly deserted country mansion, only to find himself imprisoned along with four strangers by a mysterious force.

7 Days a Skeptic: The sequel to 5 Days A Stranger. Four hundred years into the future, the scoutship Mephistopheles and its crew of six discovers something it should have left alone.

Trillby's Notes: The third game in the John DeFoe series, which expands the storyline and connects 5 Days and 7 Days. Master thief turned paranormal investigator Trilby follows the trail of John DeFoe's soul idol to a small hotel in Wales, where he discovers the dark history of the cursed wood.

6 Days a Sacrifice: The long-awaited fourth and final game of the John DeFoe quadrilogy. It ties up all three previous episodes so don't even try understanding this game without playing through all the others first. Council inspector Theodore Dacabe is sent to investigate the headquarters of a fad religion and finds himself embroiled in the machinations of destiny.

Abandonware is essentially freeware though :(

Anyhow - JetPack is awesome.

Fairly self-explanitory - collect the green gems, and gold treasure for extra points, then exit through the huge set of doors when you got all the gems.

game3.gif

And you even got a level creator if you think the levels that adept software made aren't hard enough for you :P

It's a bit of a blurred line though, so just to make sure I'd rather keep it freeware only.

Jetpack was freaking epic back in the day. I would play that for hours on end. :D
I got it and Raptor: Call of the Shadows on my USB stick for breaks at uni :D

That was another epic game. I played it all the way through about 30 times I think. For the type of game it is, kind of repetitive, that was a lot of times. I just played it all the way through (trainee to master or whatever the highest is) a month or two ago. I love that game.

Torus Trooper

tt1ox5.gif

A rather psychedelic looking shooter where you control a spaceship racing along on a (partial) torus, trying to make it to checkpoints in time. Killing gains you time, getting killed costs you time. Other than that, it's pretty simple :)

Net Yaroze? I heard of a debugging version of the ps1, but didnt know its details. I doubt u cud consider it freeware, but it does allow users to create and use a lot of stuff for free.

Ah...jetpack. I still have this game's demo version that i beat a few dozen times. Anyone ever heard of commander keen? Ah, the memories. Now back to playing gears of war..... <.<

Life is a joke. Yeah, I don't get it either.

War Rock

A lot of you have probably heard of this. Its a First Person Shooter based in modern times. Its completely free although do a have premium version, but its not really worth it. You can use all vehicles such as Jets / Bomber Jets / Humvees / Dirt Bike and Helicopters. Its a fun game with pretty good graphics and rag doll physics.

Theres no premium version, just you can use money to buy extra weapons and get easier xp. Also if you buy a boxed version, you get a dogtag and some other stuff.

Arrows to move and z/x for regular and charge shot, if I recall correctly.

The game is called Beyond the Red Line, it's not freeware, it's open source (just as free if not more so.) I just saw the link on digg a few days ago, I haven't actually been able to try it out yet.

It is a Battlestar Galactica game, following the Battlestar Pegasus.

Here is a link to a topic on the SciFi forums and here is a link to the comment section on digg. Both places have numerous links to downloads.

  • 9 months later...

Bump to bring you a nice bit of nostalgia:

Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2, as offered by Rockstar. For some reason they seem to be a lot harder than I remember them #-o

LOL people still remember Jetpack & Raptor

And yes, Warrock is an awesome FPS game to be totally free. Yes you can buy premium stuff, but free players can still beat people who have extra perks like flash mines/medic kits or heavy machine guns... If they have skill to compensate.

I still occassionally play it since I have access to a (shared) level 45 account ranked Captain/Major or so [can't remember which one]. If you play on USA_VS_EU or EU_VS_USA servers send a PM.

Yeah, John DeFoe is awesome. Incidentally, the games are made by the same guy who does the Zero Punctuation reviews.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:
