Eastern Lands = Range Update?

Faelenof

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, just putting something up that I noticed in this month's Postbag from the Hedge...

Foreigner,

Ak-Haranu not know fully what you ask. You call Ak-Haranu brute, and yet ask help and information? You foreigner rude to honourable warrior! I come from many far to east to see what west offer, and find only savage and impolite. Green men of Phasmatys better mannered, and green men of Phasmatys dead! Master Robin only foreigner Ak-Haranu wish to know, for Master Robin is great archer - much revered profession in east.

Ak-Haranu must sell equipment from empire's armies to get home. I have no desire go past walls of ghost-city, only lamia and leech in forests, and I doubt much else beyond.

Ak-Haranu

Note the bolded statement. "Master Robin is great archer - much revered profession in east."

I feel like I'm looking too far in the future, but does this mean a large range update in the future? Do the Eastern lands have some sort of powerful range weapons/arrows/bolts/armour/whatever that we in the mainland have absolutely no idea about?

Ak-Haranu also says that Robin's the only guy he wants to even know properly, because he's a very good archer. Why did they put Robin Hood there anyway? Not just because he was in a quest, but he must've been put in that quest for some reason. Bill Teach, Robin Hood and Ak-Haranu are the only living people in Port Phasmatys.

Why? Why did JaGEx put them there specifically? Bill Teach was part of the pirate quests, so we can rule him out, I think, because his story's been fleshed out. But Robin Hood, whom Ak-Haranu seems to idolise a little from what I remember from Ghosts Ahoy!, is not a mage, not a warrior - but a ranger. They could've used a different character instead of Robin Hood in the Ghosts Ahoy! quest, but they used him.

If and when the Eastern lands will be released, I think we can expect something for the rangers. Surely there's a reason for archery to be a "revered profession" in the Eastern lands, whether it be very powerful over the other side of the ocean, or very useful (eg, slaying some sort of monster, or doing some task that melee or magic can't, etc etc), right?

Thoughts? Speculations? This is just me rambling, really, but I might have hit on something. :P

P.S. Also something interesting but almost completely unrelated: "... only lamia and leech in forests". A lamia was something in Greek mythology that had "the head and torso of a woman, but the lower half of her body was serpentine" (taken from Wikipedia, all hail its greatness). I thought it would be something related to vampyres or something similar, as leeches and vampyres are the only things that live in the outskirts of Phasmatys. *shrug*

i think you are right, but i have no idea what ther range weapons that they could intoduce.

Surley they are starting to see that range has always been the shortest side of the triangle, with the poll showing only 14% of people favouring it over mage and melee.

I'd like to point out a few other things we know of the easter lands:

1) Warrior's guild was founded by a person that had been in the eastern lands. He brought cyclopes and other eastern people back to the main land.

2) After the cold war- quest, where the Ardougne's zoo got it's makeover, the zoo has had a cyclope in one of the cages. One of the people who works in the zoo tells how they got the cyclop. He tells that the guy who brought it to the zoo died shortly after :uhh:

3) The area of runescape is a planet, you can travel east from port phasmatys with the ship in the docks and get to Port Tyras. At the moment there aren't many people out there who'd have seen the eastern lands even when they have crossed the seas with ships many times. :-k Weird.

--

Yes, I'm looking forward to this future update. They propably have new clothes, weapons and 'culture' in the eastern lands and hopefully it all comes with a new quest \' ... Maybe in 2 or 3 years? :-#

Eastern lands - if we assume Eastern lands to be loosely based on the feudal orient in the way that the Fremenik lands are loosely based on the Viking tradition - and ranging brings to mind shuriken, but that would really not be a lot different to the way knives are used at the moment. Possibly the chakram but we already have thrown rings. And anyone wielding shuriken or chakram would not really be an "archer".

The Mongols were especially feared mounted archers. But that would require the introduction of horses to the game which I think Jagex has categorically ruled out.

equip anti-fire shield

some of most famous archers of all time, from the east - The Parthians, famous for shooting arrows while sitting backwards - on their horses. yes, yes, we'lll never get horses, but these are the best archers ever.

and when are we getting katanas? because if they are a dissapointment like the pirate swords, it'll be tme for hari-kari

Iff you've done Devious Minds there is also something about the Eastern Lands I thought...

A bow-sword...

You have to make one...

Don't remember exactly...

which is technically part of the white knight plot-line, which the chaos elemental may have mentioned in his infuriating anagrams

Haha, yeah, they probably noticed that, what with that ranged joke they made a few Postbags ago. :P

Thanks for that, Perakp, should've done a bit more research on what we already know about the Eastern lands. :P The Cyclops must be solely from the Eastern lands, then. to the entire range update thing>

On the whole charter ship subject, do they actually travel east specifically? Or do they go around the main continent and go to Port Tyras via that route? The full charter map (as seen on the Knowledge Base - Tip.It doesn't have Port Tyras on it, for some odd reason) is only for the known lands... maybe it takes longer to go 'east' to Tyras than fording the continent and going 'west'.

Dwarfie, I think we can indeed assume Eastern lands are based on Oriental themes, or maybe also Middle Eastern/Arabic themes.

The only solid info I've gathered is, yes, it's mostly the horse archers thing (horse archery minigame, anyone? :P). Maybe ballistas or something of the sort, haha.

Sheep, katanas would be pretty cool, but all the o0ber anime lovers'll flock to it. :P

Fire, bow-sword would be interesting, I actually forgot about that (last quest I had to do at the time for my quest cape <3). There's an idea - yes, it was part of the White Knight plot, but I don't know if it had any extra connections to the Eastern lands... was it ever mentioned that it was a "foreign" weapon?

EDIT: Woah! Just looked over the Tip.It quest guide for Devious Minds... the image that came along with it?

Pseudo-katana-and/or-Eastern-lands-sword, anyone? Maybe Devious Minds does have a connection to the Eastern lands, meaning the creepy monk guy who made you make that bow-sword does have a connection to Eastern-landians, and therefore meaning that the bow-sword has something to do with the Eastern lands.

new ranged weapons sounds nice, what about an arbalest?

Or even better, why don't they make longbows better so that people will actually use them?

There's no such thing as "wireless." Just really long extension cords.

the sword he is holding is the bow-sword that you made for him - short term memory loss Faelenof?

OT: just clicked in my head - bow sword, new type of ranging, 1+1= window...

the only reason that is, is because people are lazy melee is Uber quick exp where range isn't

if you ask the "monk" after you made the sword (but before you give it), how to wield it, it will tell you that it's a special eastern technique...

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

You missed some living people in Phasymatys - charter crew members. \'

I hate ranged, but I really want one of those bowswords. Melee + ranged.
