Retro or Modern

What games do you prefer and why?

To be honest i prefer the retro games because they are actually a lot harder, mainly because of the fact that you couldnt save games on retro consoles(most anyways)

At least the retro games where original, all todays games are the same. Lets go round and batter the heck out of aliens to save the day... The only way the modern games will ever 'out do' the retro games is in graphics...

It has to be modern, realistically. The way consoles and the PC have advanced have just made a player's gaming experience so much wider, greater and optional. I mean, as a 4 year old with a NES, I could only have imagined in my little dreams of being able to play something like the Wii within 15 years.

Retro games will always be their for nostalgia and will never fade away for me. But, as for a 'better' gaming experience, it's gonna have to be modern.

O... k... How many sidescrolling shooters were there? How many platform games? How many top-down space shooters? Retro and modern games both have their genres. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that in retro games, the amount of variation within the genre was/is far smaller than in modern games.

"Retro" games only last for a very, very short time for me. They're fun things to get back into once in a while, but I easily grow tired of them. I prefer modern.

Tetris. Can't say that only lasts a short time, I have been playing it since I was 5 (20 now) pretty steadily.

I personally think that game-play and story writing has got much better as the industry developed. Game-play wise, I always found my Super Nintendo to be a bit lacking. There were many games that were too difficult or not explained properly. The lack of a save feature also made them impossible to complete. I remember spending at least 2 days without switching it off whilst playing on Final Fantasy - The 4 Diamonds. I played Super Mario 1 & 2 & 3 and although they kept me entertained for hours on end, they didn't offer as much freedom as I wanted (3 was a massive improvement in that aspect) and lacked save fuctions. I got my Super Nintendo from my cousin when he got a PC to play on with about 30 games. About 5 of these were playable. The rest was either too difficult/ not well enough explained (eg - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Castlevania and the original Zelda) or just plain boring (eg. Tetris and Pong).

Nowadays, you have difficulty sliders to decide how hard you want it to be, which means that everyone can be pleased from the biggest gamer to the kid having his first go on a game. The graphics are much, much better and they do add something to a game. The game-play has also got better. RTS's weren't around in retro times (I think anyway, please correct me if I'm wrong) and they are great fun, well thought out, challenging games. FPS's have come a long way as well. Games like Half-Life are leaps and bounds game-play wise above anything from the retro years. It's not just shoot alien, dodge, shoot again, there are stratedgies and realisms built into the games that make it far more entertaining and rewarding than just doing the same simple task, faster and faster (space invaders) for a high score or jumping from moving bridges onto the heads of over-grown puddings (Super Mario). RPG's have also lead the way into creating whole new worlds and lands for the player to explore and live in. This was seen in games like the first Zelda but there was always restrictions and the whole thing was very stiff and unreal. Games like Oblivion and Gothic III show us how far we've come in improving our games to provide what people want.

Because there were relatively few games out there, it was easy to be original. I loved Duckhunt because it was a novelty and I spent hours blowin' up them clay pidgeons and ducks. Nowadays, there is Time Crisis and House of the Dead. Both much more visually applealing and more entertaining even though they arn't original.

The story writing in those days was appalling. You had to save a princess from a dragon or collect enough rainbows to get someone out of dreamland. And that was it for the entire games story. No cut-scenes, no further explanation except maybe a picture at the end with everyone looking happy on it when you had killed the final boss.

Nowadays you are given a story (for example the Half-Life series or Final Fantasy series) which is well written, planned out, gripping and full of twists.

Chalk one up for modern for me.

Yeah some 'retro' games I have fond memorys of. But have you ever gone back to play said games? I mean sure there are some 'fun' ones still tha t are timeless but most are a piece of poo today.

I love how games have evolved so much from simple 'get the high score' to huge plot lines.

So what are these games you are basing this claim on? The small collection of xbox games you have in your closet that consists of halo and halo2 along with a couple other random games?

Modern games for sure. I think almost anyone who says otherwise is probably trying to sound like they are all oldschool just because they like the older games more. But yea, modern games along with bringing out the old n64 every month or so or playing some nintendo games I bought on the wii.

This is what the topic is about. If we like the older ones, we say retro. If we like newer games we pick modern.

I have never been big on the modern gaming scene.

Sure I have Battlefield 2 and Oblivion, but almost 90% of my games are at least 10 years old. I still have computers with 95 / 98 installed just so I can play them. Hell, I even have a DOS machine with over 2000 games that I still use on a regular basis.

One just has to look at my xfire stats to tell I'm not lieing.

Edit:

1. Battlefield 2 16 hours 524 hours

2. Oblivion 2 hours 135 hours

3. Freecell 2 hours 122 hours

4. Solitaire < 1 hour 113 hours

5. PartyPoker.com - 88 hours

Aye?

Contra, Doom, Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Toejam and Earl, Asteroids, Star Wars, And plenty more

That seems like enough variety for me
