Forum Advertisements Are Getting Out of Control!

Featured Replies

*****************************

I know that there is the thing in Website Discussion or whatever for reporting bad ads, but this is more forum only related, and I think that it needs more attention, as this problem has not gone away.

EDIT: Now these are showing up on the Webstite, too! Argghhh! Official response please!

Okay. It started off with the Chinese guy, now the forums have been getting more and more flash ads that stay on the page and scroll down with you. They al have an option to close, but then another little thing stays in the corner that you can't close. I realize that Tip.It and forums are mostly ad supported, but now the forum page is beginning to look like something hosted on a freewebs sever or something, rather than a professional site. I would like to know why these were added and if there are any alternatives to these horrid ads.

Get an ad blocking extension, AdBlock, NoScript etc. - don't put up with annoying/intrusive adverts. If enough people don't then they won't be financially viable for site owners to implement.

I've never had any of those. :-s

Already done with noscript. It sucks to be consistently suspicious of what Tip.It may be putting on my computer with these ads, but hey: You gotta do what you've gotta do. Tip.It wants to take the lazy route and push ads in my face, then I'm going to make sure they don't get a cent for it.

There are plenty of other advertising options that aren't intrusive.

I'm pretty sure thats a thing you would pm to someone and not write publicly - or even keep to yourself. Probably not the wisest thing to write.

Anyway its a problem, but tip.its gotta make enough money to keep the servers running and the website up and running. I believe that tip.it (if possible) should select which ad companies promote on their site and forum so that we don't get these annoying ones.

I've never seen any ads other than the one like 100 x 700 or so banner at the top. Maybe Safari's popup blocker just works nicely

Like I said, Tip.It has plenty of alternatives to make money off of advertising that are non-intrusive.

I'd rather sit through 12 full hours of the zwinky advertisements than shut off the program I have blocking every script coming from Tip.It, mainly because the only difference between the two is that the zwinky ads didn't attempt to shove malware onto my system.

Yeah, this is becoming a pain in the butt, and my ad blocker doesn't help. :-P OH well.

The code in my sig should say 1032 not 0132.

I just turn popup blocker on. If you have IE 7:

Tools > Pop-up Blocker > Turn on Pop-up Blocker.

:)

Though, the problem is that they are flash scripts embedded in the page, not pop-ups...

I dunno, I ahve ie7 popup blocker on, and google's, and they still come

Yeah it really is outrageous we can't even browse the forums in peace and quiet anymore, what a shame.

I thought the Chinese guy was kind of entertaining....the first time. But yeah, the ads are getting annoying, especially the huge "page flip" ad that covers half your screen. At the same time, though, I'm not paying anything to view this site so I can't really complain that much.

Pixeloaded.jpg

The Hot Pocket one was good, it was decent advertising, despite being annoying, and probably worked to sell a few Hot Pockets.

But these other ones are horrible! I created a thread about it in the wrong section.

Anyways, I've PM'd Tallest about it who is going to make a note of it somewhere. :)

Me doing staff.

Plenty of other large forums manage to use advert providers that aren't intrusive, annoying, pushing malware and pyramid/matrix schemes etc. - why is tip.it different?

fractalsignature2lq4.jpg
Adbrite allows you to only display network and CPC ads based on a white list rather than blacklisting bad ones. You can choose EXACTLY what adverts you want to display and you just need to log in every few days to approve/deny the adverts. Its a simple process and means that you never get adverts that you dont want on your site. I have no idea why Tipit continues to use advertising companies who constantly foist ad ware and porn adverts onto its users.

I've browsed plenty of other RuneScape fan forums and NONE of them have adverts on the FORUMS that hog up your screen.

Tip.it has both, pop ups on the main page even some ads that cover over your screen on skills section and forums.

These ads are now on the main website too. Still waiting for an official response to clear this up.
