They just look SO creepy to me. Their heads are... square and their eyes are big. Crickets are shiny and odd looking. Grasshoppers are good at camouflage but the moment you get too close to them they freak out and jump all over you and get tangled up in your hair and go insane... :S They're capable of jumping really quickly and really far and their movements are always so sporadic... That's what makes them creepy to me. :P

Also, one time I found a HUGE grasshopper in my shoe in second grade.

Once, I got into the shower and a cricket jumped on my shoulder and scared the crap out of me. I screamed and fell over, then proceeded to run out of the bathroom naked and hitting myself all over trying to get it off of me. I had that creepy crawly feeling for days.

I had a dream tonight about spiders.

I was at my room, and suddendly, behind my cabinet I see something crawling out. It's a huge pink fluorizing spider with hairy legs. I get my shoe and I squash it. But then after a few minutes I suddendly hear soemthing, and I look at my shoe, and it's got this fluorizing stuff on it, and the spider regenerates in 2 fluorzing spiders which crawl away creepily fast. Brr.

I keep several species of tarantulas (popular name for mygalomorph spiders belonging to Theraphosidae) and have kept other kinds of spiders, but I used to be scared of them - to the point where I scanned a room when I entered it, and any black dot on a wall was discreetly checked out.

The fear of spiders is a natural instinct, and is actually very useful in areas with venomous spiders. I have been on day/week trips dedicated to invertebrates and reptiles in Thailand, Laos, Egypt and Israel. Some of the spiders there can cause some damage, but compared to what the venomous snakes and scorpions do, it's nothing.

I have also been bitten by an unknown spider in Brazil, and watched a bump on my leg reach the size of a tennis ball while waiting for the doctor - knowing that one of the most killing venomous spiders (Phoneutria spp.) was common in the area, I was pretty pale at that point. :ohnoes: Not many spiders are venomous enough to kill a human, but I can assure you that neurotoxins and toxins attacking tissue are no joke.

A few examples of tissue damages (Warning! Pictures are not pleasant.):

I hope to work with spiders in one way or another some day. Hopefully finding alternative medical use for toxins - natural toxins are already used in treatment for several diseases.

I blame the way in which they move.

Exactly what I was going to say. Lack of predictability. They have so many (fearfully long) legs and I just can't figure out the logic behind the movement. I can't say if they'll move forward, sideways or backward, I can't predict which leg is going to move next and they're bloody fast as well.

Shudder.

I'll be honest, I hate going down to the shed in the night to get firewood, as i'm scared the wood will have spiders on it, that I can't see.

The camel spider;

giantspideryt5.jpg

"Some facts about those giant spiders: They run 10 mph, jump three feet, are a nocturnal spider, so only come out at night unless they are in shade. When they bite you, you are injected with Novocain so you go numb instantly. You don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t even know you are bitten when you are sleeping, so you wake up with part of your leg or arm missing because it has been gnawing on it all night long. If you are walking around and you bump something that is casting a shadow over it, and the sun makes contact with it, you better run. It will instantly run for your shadow, and scream the whole time it is chasing you. PS. These are Spiders found daily in Iraq by troops. Imagine waking up and seeing one of these in your tent!! Spread this to all your friends who have a family member in the army, and let them know what kind of daily life they live everyday! Hopefully someone high in our government will start thinking about our troops̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ lives, and they̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ll be back home safe real soon!"

-Fake.

Although.. that doesn't mean there aren't spiders close to that size yet to be discovered.. *shudders*

Camel spiders (Solifugae) are real and they can run at up to 10mph but the rest of the story is bogus. They dont jump hige distances, they don't attack humans and even if they did they dont have any anaesthetic and wont gnaw at you all night thats for sure. the biggest risk of a bite from a camel spider is infection afterwards from the wound. They are sometimes kept as household pets and all the nasty stories are just told to scare the new requruits into the middle east by the veterans.

Solifuges are arachnids, but do not reach close to the size showed on the picture, where the good ol' fishing story trick is used.

Solifuges are not venomous, but can deliver a painful bite (learnt the hard way in Egypt). Here are a few of them:

From Israel:

From Egypt, 30 seconds before said hard way learning:

Please keep in mind I have small hands. ::'

Edit: This picture better shows the jaws of the bugger that bit me:

Most of those spiders don't creep me out. In fact, I wouldn't mind having a pet tarantula (the hair and size make them more comforting). To me it's the tiny household spiders (one or two centimeters or smaller), and it's mostly based on the physique and possibly movement, but mostly physique. And it's really only one type, the type with the giant backs, see here:

housespider7152.jpg

Sometimes their backs are shiny, and it doesn't help when they have eggs near them like in the above picture and the one in my basement that triggered this thread. :ohnoes:

The picture is misleading, its a real photo but its close to the camera so perspective is a bit off and if you look carefully its actually two not just one spider.

Just want to make it clear that solifuges are arachnids but not spiders, despite their popular name "camel spiders". You are right about there being two specimens on the military picture, and the middle picture in my previous post shows the real size (the species in the picture is one of the biggest) much better.

In addition to visiting school classes for educational purposes, I have also helped people getting over their fear of spiders. Most people can fortunately be cured without phychological help.
