The State of the Internet:

Featured Replies

Entering this topic, one may of though that it was about how I feel about the current status of the internet. But now, this is a wrong assumption. This topic is to dwell on an idea. One that can stem from what we have and branch off to be perhaps something marvelous, or something of a disaster.

I ask my peers on these forums this question: Is the internet a place, or a thing? If you are in need of an example, I will provide one. Say there is a poll along the street. And you frequent there with a few other people to discuss matters, or just hang out, would you consider this poll an object (just a thing)? Or is this poll a place to you, almost somewhere where you can say "Hey, you going to the poll later on?". Obviously this is not the best example, but I think it does well to help you all answer the question, Is the internet a place or an object?

Personally, I find it a place. Thus this deals with the title of this thread (It has a double meaning).

As defined by Dictionary.com State:

1. the condition of a person or thing, as with respect to circumstances or attributes

But there is another meaning along the list:

7. a politically unified people occupying a definite territory; nation.

Myself, I think the first part of this post covers number 1. What is the internet. But this part deals with number 7. Are, or could, we be considered a nation?

After reading up about the AU (American Union) forming, I'm starting to think "This could all be leading to the eventual creation of a world state, a world nation, all united". Which leads me to think, the internet... If it can be considered a place (a "definite territory"), and if perhaps we are united (a "Unified people"). then maybe, do we fit this definition of a state? A nation?

A nation (by my definition, not anything else) Is defined by the culture, the people, the common morals of how things are done. On the internet, things are done with a fairly common moral, we basically have our own culture, and in this case, we are pretty much all the same people.

My point to all this one might ask? Well, I think that it might be time that the internet becomes this place, this nation. A free country, not found truly anywhere, but is kind of everywhere, where everyone can feel of the same nationality, where chaos and order work together in harmony.

I would like to know others positions on this idea, and if they feel that the internet is a place or a thing.

I consider the Internet to be a place. It's what we call... "A bad neighborhood".

What a violent place to live..

But anyway, the internet already has its own language, which is a start.

Cool.

The internet is one of the only "free" things left in this world. It is too large to control, requires nothing to be able to use and anything you could ever want can be found on the internet.

Whethere you want to play a game, research how to build a bomb or just simply do your shopping online, it can be done  .

And i <3 it!

I regard it as a wild jungle. Full of possibilities, yet untamed.

Unfortunately, the internet is no longer completely free. It is far more so than the real world, but is not completely free. Governments have the capability, if they choose, to track you down for what you say. At the moment that requires cooperation from the big industries - which they give. China imprisons people for speaking out on the internet, and American industries cooperate.

I think that the nature of the internet has changed over time. It used to be a thing, a research tool, a giant magazine. Then it changed to a method of communication. Now it really is a place.

I have to get practically naked when I'm cooking bacon.

I may be immature, but that made me laugh!

If it was completely free, there would be no laws, only moral norms. However, we got laws (rules at these forums, general laws against stuff like child porn, warez, etc) so it's not completely free. Is it bad or not can be decided by you :P

I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Apparently a lot of people say it. I own.

http://linkagg.com/ Not my site, but a simple, budding site that links often unheard-of websites that are amazing for usefulness and fun.

The internet is just a connection :P

Nah, if you think the places on the internet are perverted or immature, yadayadayada.. You're looking in the wrong website. Tip.It's maturity level was near perfect when I started, but, it's getting better with Abyssalwhip being banned. :-$

I dont need a siggy no moar.

i think alot of ppl need to be more mature about things.. in my town in indiana , if you say the word "damn" or any "curse" word at all you automatically get 3 days of community service because the mayor is a a hole about everything.

the internet is basically 1 big neighborhood...there are people who try to rob it(hackers) and use it like a peeping tom(pervs)thing

I do see how the internet could be considered a place, with the way people interact with and use it. An interesting way of thinking about it would be as a massive shopping centre used to exchange information, purchase things, entertainment and pornography :?

I view the Internet as an alternate plane of reality.

And Abbysalwhip was banned? What finally did it? (I've been away for a while)

The Internet is a state of mind. Embrace the Internet.

It's a neighborhood, a community, a nation. It has its centers of activity, the places everyone knows. Myspace, Facebook. Yahoo and Google. Something Awful forums. It has the shady side of town, and the alt-porn hole that goes deeper than anyone wants to try and find out. ( :-X ) It has robbers, vandals, criminals, and police. It's got government officials poking their noses into it, though most of them don't have a f---ing clue what they're doing. It has noobs, mods, and its own language. It has anything you want and a whole bunch of crap you probably don't want. It has me being all poetic about it. It's living, it's growing, it's changing. Embrace the Internet.

The internet is a place for everyone to share their egos.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

Daang. I liked him.

the net's a place. And a pretty twisted on, at that... I love it.

If we're a nation, we need a flag. It'd be like, Chuck Norris, with 1337, and Leroy Jenkins. Or some crap like that. It'd change every few seconds.

It really has

come this November the Federal Government might let the states start charging taxes on the internet, inculding E-mial tax.
