Lynyrd_Skynyrd
Hey I just wanted to get an idea of what kind of music people like on this forum in a debate. So what do you listen to and why is it better than pop? Because I hate pop music, people can't play instruments and are just in it for the money really, without putting thought into their songs. Btw you don't just have to like metal, because I like all kinds of rock etc. But why is metal and rock better than pop crap? Let's make this a mature debate as possible so no flaming. The best advice in life is to take your time and don't live too fast.
How2PK
Metal is pop music as well. And before this 'discussion' can be held, I think you're the one that needs to be a bit more, how do you say it, 'musically matured'. Satenza
Pop = Popular music, so really define your genre's a little better. Give us some examples of people. Also i don't know how being able to play a guitar automatically means your not in it for the money, or neccessarily why thats a bad thing. Look at Motley Crue (an 80's rock/metal band, they always said they were in it for the money and... other things ;) ) With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
Intriguing
But why is metal and rock better than pop crap?. . .Let's make this a mature debate as possible so no flaming. Wow. Just, wow. Pointless thread. You should realise that a logical debate on this forum is impossible. But anyway, Metal. Cool.
Abelmisi
I really find it amusing how in the thread title you make it sound like it was a two choice, unbiased question you are asking here, but in the first post you completely ignore what's in the title and make up a new subject and start dissing pop. So what do you listen to and why is it better than pop? But why is metal and rock better than pop crap? For the sake of being On-Topic, Metal. i123i
WARNING TROLL POST AHEAD You've been warned. I now ask why you avoided to list every other genre, I mean you don't even list Rap/Hip Hop or Classical(only 2 bigger genres tip iters might listen to, atleast I think, unless you don't group all the subgenres of rock like emo and stuff....I hope I'm making sense). Right, so explain to me WHY screaming at a microphone and plucking strings, and slamming metal and plastic makes it any more talented then making a completely metaphoric and multiple syllable 4 verse song? Really, how do you relate to metal? You just like to hear the actual music part of it? DOES metal EVEN HAVE a point in their songs? I can't be assed to keep typing so answer what I've already written before I come back for the second round.
Icingdeath
Listen to Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera...they have a point to all their songs. And quite a bit more talent with their instruments than most. I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

In my eyes metal doesn't really focus on the vocals as much as other genres; its all about the musicianship of the members. And that is head and shoulders above any other genre. Sorry, Poop, but that's just nonsense. Why is the musicianship of Metal musicians better than that of 'any other genre' in the world. I really don't understand you guys. Why do you always have to do "my favorite genre is better than your favorite genre" fight. It's so pointless, and I can't see why some people just don't see that, how many times must we keep telling you guys. And that's the way it always goes here. You guys keep recycling your worthless opinions. "Metal is so good because it's better than pop music because all the other people like pop music and the metal muscians are better than any other genre out there". Start thinking for yourself, instead of yelling the contentless opinions of your classmates. And if it's yourself thinking up these insane statements, grow up a little bit (nothing personal or directed at you only, Poopie). This goes for the people who like rap music and diss everything that's not rap as well. And for any other worshipper of any other musical genre or category. look_its_rob
This is probably one of the worst topics ever, but ill try to say O(n)T I'm gonna say "pop" is better than metal. Metal gives me the biggest head ache in the world and i just really cant enjoy it. a lot of the time the guitar and drums and bass just sound like noise, not music at all. i mean i can play my guitar backwards with a screw driver and i pretty much got metal. Pop, as you call it, on the other hand(ill assume you mean things like sean kingston, ashley simpson, and other people like that) has a very catchy beat. I can actually understand what they are saying and i find my self singing their songs all the time. Look its rob!

Well, I never said I didn't like anything else. I listen to almost all genres of music. If anything, that should solidify my opinion that I feel most metal is the height of musicianship. Now of course there are hundreds of sub-genres, many of them don't fit the bill (i.e. grindcore, generic heavy metal, etc.) theres plenty of bad metal, trust me. I'm referring to intricate neo-classical and power metal bands that seem to be very popular around these forums. Metal fans, check out my band!Still the King.... Ragen
I like them both for different reasons. I have no problem defining metal - something that is aggresive and distorted. Sometimes I stick bands like Iron Maiden in rock and sometimes I stick stuff like Foo Fighters in metal. It's jsut my definistion of metal and I don't really care for what the official one is. Pop in my playlist contains everything from Acoustic Ballads to soft soft rock, ie. chill out music. That's my definition of pop and likewise, I don't care what pop really is. Anyway, I like both equally depending on what mood I'm in/ what I'm doing. I prefere metal for working out and pop for chilling out. It's that simple. Sir_Alex85
By pop music, are we talking about popular music (what pop music is), or what comes to mind when you think of pop music (radio friendly, etc.)? I like both. And some bands can incorporate metal and pop and still be good. But I have no problems with either. If I had to choose, I suppose I'd pick metal, but only because I like more metal groups than pop groups. But both genres are pretty good. Alot of people are against pop because they think of the bad examples of it. But when you think of the bad examples of any genre, it seems bad. It really has
How2PK
Yea. It would be nice if TS would say what he considers to be pop music. When I think of pop music Metal is included as well. I believe that there are three categories of music. You've got classical music, jazz music and pop music. And within every category there are a lot of genres. But I don't think you (TS) thinks the same way I do, so please give us your definition of pop-music. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore! goldphishies
What do you define as pop? "Iron Man", by Black Sabbath, is defined as pop by most music players, as is a number of Judas Priest songs(Breaking the Law, Grinder, etc.), and they are both Metal bands. I prefer metal to things like Country. But metal bands (with the possible exeption of Judas Priest, Rob Halford actually sings) generally focus on guitars/drums, and not the vocal talents, i.e. Metallica, James Hetfield basically growls all the time, while Kirk Hammet is voted eleventh best guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. It depends what your into, all music can be described as pop, but general stereotypes of pop are N'Sync, Britney Spears, etc. Is that what you're thinking of? Because I'm pretty sure Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath can play guitar pretty good... and Geezer Butler had excellent bass lines in Iron Man. Kenshinjapan
Because I hate pop music, people can't play instruments and are just in it for the money really, without putting thought into their songs. My thoughts exactly I pick metal but emo is better than both of them : The Beatles could be considered as pop music. Are you saying that The Beatles (and a huge number of the musicians at the time) sucked? Well if pop (The Beatles) weren't ever around, there would have never been any inspiraion to start the other genres of music. So no pop=no rock. :-X YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE! Echofish
Not all pop artists are trailer trash. Just like what kenshinjapan said, pop was around before most genres were. Artists like ABBA, Michael Jackson etc. they were pop weren't they? They're getting remembered after what, 10, 20 years? But some artists, they just come and go. Ultra Unholy,Hearted Machine... ironmaiden666
I go with metal, as i really enjoy headbangin to solo's with my m8's, espacially dragonforce and trivium. Not all metal is just screaming, Iron Maiden's Bruce [bleep]inson, Dragonforce's ZP threat and Megadeths Dave Mustaine all have excellent singing voices, and there songs have meanings, megadeths songs are mainly very anti-establishment, just listen to there new album United Abominations. Also i fell that the fact they have learned to play instruments, rather than sing to a synthesised beat makes them a bit more respectable than pop. RpgGamer
i agree but the way u said it, you sounded very musically ignorant. I don't like mainstream stuff (pop) because i like being different. i like metal cause its inspiring and what not. pop as of now is pretty much crap, but yesterday's pop is today's underground dirty little secret Quote Quote Anyone who likes tacos is incapable of logic.
