PSP anyone?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on getting a PSP, among with a few games.

The genre doesn't really matter (I prefer Racing and First Person Shooters though), it's the gameplay and fun factor that counts. :)

The games I want to get as of now:

Burnout Legends

Need For Speed Carbon

GTA Vice City Stories - GTA Liberty City Stories (which one's better?)

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Call of Duty (? :| )

I'm especially looking for a games that have good online multiplayer options and graphics.

A PSP is well worth getting... I prefered Liberty City stories to Vice City. Also if you do have wireless internet, Socom is well worth getting, really fun.

Apparently, you've never played a DS. Playing it would negate your statement completely.

Thanks for the suggestions. But why I should I get DS? PSP is targeted for an older audience, and I want to be able to use mine for a long time.

The technical abilities all outstand the DS imo. (The only thing that's worse is the battery I think.) I can also use the PSP for more things. Here are some games that came out for the PSP and the DS as well:

I just can't see why someone would pick the DS, but it's an open match for me, so tell my why the PSP is worse and I'll get a DS. Just don't go "OMFG ignorant idiot chek da effin gameplai" I don't want to get this thread locked.

Well, we never said "You ignorant idiot"

PSP's capabilities aren't outstanding. It is NOT targeted for an older audience, that's bull crap. It's for young and older alike, it may have 2 M games, but the younger kids get them too. The internet capabilities suck [wagon], 'nuff said. (The DS's aren't great either). The DS has wifi, to face people online. I don't think the PSP has wifi capabilities...

The battery for the PSP is very bad, it lasts a couple of hours before going into oblivion. Then...The games. The DS looks childish, it isn'tt even close. Trauma center was excellent. The touch screen get's you into the games, mario cart uses very good graphics for a portable with the old fun of the nintendo 64. The PSP has good graphics, but the playability isn't great.

There are many Similarities between the two. However, the similarities bring the uprising of the DS and downfall of the PSP. The similiarities: The PSP plays music, movies, goes on the internet (Sometimes.) Well, so does the DS. With getting an expansion game card, (I think it's music DS) you can play and download music (I think. I could care less, I have an ipod).

Then, the structure of the console itself. The DS's design is superior, as it protects the screens, and if you want to buy a screen protector, go on ahead if you have one you can touch the touch screen without scratching it. The PSP...You NEED a screen protector or you are screwed. ::' Then, the lighting. The DS's lighting is superior, as the light shines bright even during day, allowing play in the light. The PSP, in my memory, was dim, terrible, and I could only play a movie/game at night. :uhh:

My last comment: The DS has a wider range of video game library, for young and old, ranging from a couple of mature games to E games even a teen would play. Like Metroid (It's out). Or Zelda phantom hourglass (Coming soon). And finally, you can play...Gameboy advance games.

There. My review. DS wins. PSP looses. And I learned from experience, I had a PSP and returned it within the couple of weeks of buying it. ::'

I don't have either, although i prefer the psp for the sole reason that my friends who got the ds became pokemon fanatics.

Can you imagine a 16/17 year old going "Omg is that a shiny lvl 100 lukigolfjsdfjk? Ill play you for it!"? Man! Its embarrassing!

Other than that, i would advise on MGS: portable ops, FF anniversary and god of war: chains of Olympus (coming soon).

Life is a joke. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Well it's a good choice to buy a psp now because the psp slim just came out which improves many things on the psp, including better battery life, it's a lot smaller (same screen size), tv out, more ram for a better internet browser and sorter load times, and a faster umd drive which will also improve load times.

Good games that I recommend would Call of Duty, both GTA's, Tony Hawk's Project 8, and Need for Speed.

DS wifi, hah. You mean the horrid friend code system? I'm not knowledgeable about the PSP's internet capabilities, but its very easy to get set up and searches the web well.

I believe the PSP slim has improved on this. The touch screen, in my opinion, was too figity for me and just can't replace a good old analog stick. The PSP also has just as many 'must buys' as the DS does. How many can you list for the DS? Pokemon (if you're into it), Zelda, metroid, the 2 mario games... trama center I guess. Just as many on the PSP

The music and movie capabilities aren't a big deal but still very nice for anyone who doesn't own an Mp3 player (such as my brother and perhaps others). The PSP does go online whenever you have a wifi spot (I don't know why you said 'sometimes'). I don't get how this brings the downfall of the system, surly more things = bad amirite?

Then, the structure of the console itself. The DS's design is superior, as it protects the screens, and if you want to buy a screen protector, go on ahead if you have one you can touch the touch screen without scratching it. You're correct that you can just have the DS in your pocket as-is and its fine. My brother invested in a little case for his PSP to hold it, but I'm pretty sure you could also find a holder to put it in and protect the screen. Also I never had a problem with the lighting on the PSP.

My last comment: The DS has a wider range of video game library, for young and old, ranging from a couple of mature games to E games even a teen would play. Like Metroid (It's out). Or Zelda phantom hourglass (Coming soon). And finally, you can play...Gameboy advance games.

My comments are in the bolded red. Also (if you want) you can homebrew the PSP so you can play emulators, homebrew games, ect. on it.

I personaly am not a handheld person (not out enough to use one) but the PSP would be my choice out of the two right now.

I always wondered. If you'ge got a PSP, can you use the MP3 function while playing a game?

In september there is going to be a new model of the PSP. It's lighter and thinner. It also has a different (read: better quality) battery and the loading times are suposed to be shorter. And that for the same price that you buy a PSP for now. Atleast, here in Europe.

I have got a DS myself, and I enjoy it a lot. I like playing the pokemon games (the advance verions and now Pearl or Diamond as well), and also Mario is a lot of fun. Then there are a lot of other good games as well; Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Final Fantasy III (and there are a lot more, but I haven't played them all!) and various puzzle games that are really great. Also there's Brain Training and games like that, those games might not appeal to the standard gamer, but they're a real nice addition, since they've really got a purpose, and they're not as expensive as normal games. To be honest I never used the browser (you need to buy a special cartride for it as well), but it can't be much good. Same goes for the MP3 player cardride, ignore it. Another good thing about the DS though is that you can play a lot of games in the multiplayer function (as in, you and your four friends are in the same room all with a DS) with only one game pack. I don't know how that is with the PSP. Maybe somebody could tell?

There's quite a few games for PSP that I'd like to play; Killzone Liberations, Daxter, Burnout, LocoRoco, the GTA games, Pro Evolution Soccer and various others. But for some reason the PSP doesn't really appeal to me. To me the thing seems to have too many options, which means more things that can break (yea, strange reason, but I think I can safely say that handhelds are a bit more fragile than normal consoles). Also I think that the MP3 function and the Movie function is a bit useless. Most people (maybe yourself too) have got an MP3 player which has got a ton of space for songs, so why settle for less? And as a movie fan I personally think that a screen as small as that doesn't do a movie justice. Besides, what's up with watching a movie in a train stuffed with people in broad daylight.

I'm 20 and 21 in a few days, and I guess that makes me a full grown up that owns and frequently uses a DS. And I'm sure I'm not the only one (with 2.5 million DS made weekly at this moment, and over 47 million units sold if we may believe Wikipedia, but most of the time they're quite correct on dry numbers). And if you care a lot about gameplay and especially fun factor (which you say in your first post) the DS is recommended. But if you get most statisfaction out of racing games and shooters, maybe the best thing is to get a PSP. Since they've got the superior games in those genres. PSP sales at the moment are on 25+ million units sold.

Both have their ups and downs. If you just want something to take around and play games, get the DS. If ya are planning on going away, or dont mind carrying it just incase, buy a psp for all of its functions

About the friend code and wi fi. Its not always that way, thats only to play specifically with people. Most games ive seen have a random function.

You can not do this with the psp functions that Sony supplys.

You can however do this with a homebrew app called IRshell. It's a really cool program, if you have a homebrew capable psp you should check it out. I use it as a remote control for my tv.

Apparently, you've never accepted any opinion other than your own as absolute.

Oh, c'mon Bubs, let's not start a flame war. I accept that he likes the DS, it's just people who have never played the DS and have a PSP usually are mad when they play a DS after. My friend, for example, let him borrow my DS. Returned it to me, took his PSP, traded it into Gamestop (Ripoff much?) and used some money to buy a DS.

Then, Nadril. Well, another of my friends owns a slim and refuses to use it because of the battery. And I like the friend code system, this way...I guess people can't infiltrate play while you are playing with friends? I dunno. And I truly don't care. It's wifi, you face people, blah.

The DS games range...Games I know: Metroid, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy 3, Zelda, Star Fox, Trauma Center. It depends on what you like, truly.

Oops, what I meant by "Sometimes," you see, I've had a PSP and my experiences with it were never great. Maybe for the first couple of days, then nothing. Sometimes refers to the time I tried to hook to the internet, where it would have problems. Upon which I returned it.

The lighting. It's dim. I could never play a game in daylight. Only in dim, twilight or darkness. The DS lite is really bright, I can play it during the day and still have visibility.

And I always see the DS with a wider range library, meaning not as many multi system games, repeated games. It's just whenever I go to wal mart, my first though is laughing at the half a shelf of PSP games, and the two shelf DS games.

But it's what you like. Truly. If you like GTA, go on and get a PSP, I don't aim for violence. If you like innovation, get a DS. But again, it's what you want and what you like. If you don't like the PSP, do what I did: Return it. If you don't like a DS, return it. If you are happy, good.

Hoping to get a new Signature (with matching avatar) soon. :D

+much better graphics

+wireless connection

-expenisve? :shame:

Thanks for your awesome help  . You know the ps3 is a lot harder to carry around to play games on then the psp.

Of course the ps3 is going to have better graphics, it's played on a tv and is 20x bigger than the psp.

Your second piont isn't even valid because the psp has wireless capabilities too.

Add another to that list. I bought as PSP as my first choice, but then i also bought a DS Lite, and the DS lite is a million times better.... Also much more cost effective, and the best bit about the DS lite- You can get flashcarts for it :D

So as an owner of both-

DS lite is more fun....

But if you must get the PSP- get Lego Star Wars 2, and Lumines 2.
