Misfile

Dang... I didn't read any of the comics today... I was watching the first 15 episodes of Full Metal Alchemist. Damn that show is addicting.

Geez.. from my perspective I have no idea how to read that, as I could easily see myself realistically making a post like that :XD: (seeing as how I already finished the comic, and I have in the past watched 10+ episodes of subbed Bleach in one day, and I love FMA even more than Bleach :-w ).

God, it feels weird having to just stop at the end of the comic... waiting for Monday :ohnoes: . I've tried to go back and outline it, I've practically read the whole thing twice right now (and the pages/sub-stories I liked much more than that  ), but I can't find a way to outline it. It's just so random- one panel Ash and Em are talking about they're problems, the next they're on the mountain getting ready for a race. It just jumps around so much, and I can't find any concrete bases in the story to set up "chapters", or to at least divide the comic up.

I considered dividing it up by races, as the comic does have a nice even list of multiple races and preperations for them (with many other pieces of plot in between), but that would make it difficult to outline the last big part of the comic, and a majority of the comic doesn't deal with cars and racing, considering the whole Misfile thing being the main subject of the series...

So, does anyone have any ideas for outlining it? I have ideas for labeling parts of the story where certain things happen (appearance of Ash's Devil and Angel side, Vashiel and Rumisiel vs. Cassiel, blush/affection scenes between Ash and Em [including/stetching to panels like this], etc.) but I can't find a way to properly outline the entire comic. So.. uh, any ideas?

Depends on what kind of outline you're doing.

Personally, I would outline by dividing into characters and using interactions and feelings with other characters to divide it further. That might get repetitive. So, a smarter idea would probably be to first divide into the books and then further by the major events in the book (noting interactions and character changes of course).

Well, that's an idea for you.

Edit: Having a seperate division for how heaven, hell, and the great filing system thing works would be good too. You should definately post it here when your done it though. :D

Well, Reb, what I would do is first divide it up by the books. Then I would list major plot points from each book and make connections between them. Then I would try and make levels for overarching plotlines such as Rumisiel's good deeds (only one big one so far, but that's a major part of it), Ash's races, Ash and Emily's relationship, etc. What I mean by levels is like Rumisiel excorcising Kate is big, and one of the good deeds he needs to do to get back into heaven, but since they seem to be few and far between that plotline would kind of underline the others. And then there would be the relationships, as part of the consequences of the misfile they would be big, and they occur more frequently. And then such things as Ash's races, introduction of characters, recurring characters, etc.

Hope that made sense lol, hard to get ideas like that across in writing.

It's kind of confusing because appearently the first 15 episodes span over 3 years. So you can imagine the shock of finding out the 3 years had passed in the 6 hours of watching the show.

And the comic is very hard to outline. One page they're sitting in Ash's room, and 3 pages later they're in the middle of a race, just to be back at school in another 2 pages. Very confusing...

It's actually pretty interesting that you mention that- in the manga, it starts out with Fullmetal at 15, and they never have the half-a-dozen flashback series (ep. 3-9), so it's a much smaller period of time (there isn't any point in the manga where Ed isn't a state alchemist, unlike the anime).

As for the anime, it's not really like "3 years passed" in 6 hours. The first two episodes are when he's 15 and a State Alchemist, then 3-9, as I said, are flashbacks that started with Alphonse trying to explain their history to Rose. At the end of the episode "Gun no Inu no Gindokei" ("Be Thou for the People"), there's a small scene with Ed and Al in a taxi going across the desert, and that's when the story comes full circle and they're back to being 15 and 14 again. So again, it's not like 3 years passed... it's more like a day or two passed, with a couple episodes of flashbacks :P .

Okay, okay, I'm rambling.... ^_^'. Moving on...

And the comic is very hard to outline. One page they're sitting in Ash's room, and 3 pages later they're in the middle of a race, just to be back at school in another 2 pages. Very confusing...

Exactly! I really want to outline it chronologically, but it's just physically impossible without making it look like a 30 page long outline full of more randomness than a clown convention.

I really don't want to just split it up into character/similiar scene profiles, and I know I can't use the books (as the divisions between each book are often right in the middle of a story, making them useless for organization) but... ARRGH. How the hell can this be done... -.- .

Reaching the end of that comic was like reaching the end of "Deathly Hallows."

NO! THERE HAS TO BE MORE!!! :ohnoes:

Don't worry, come Monday it'll be part of your morning routine to see the next page, and each new page each day until Friday :P . It updates really fast, I just wish something was going on right now, then I'd really feel the anticipation and suspense. I.e., imagine if the copic stopped here when we caught up o_O.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

Ignore the randomness. Being a webcomic updated daily, it jumps like that (though I didn't see it as much as people are talking about). Just stick with the main points and use sub-divisions to add in little notes about the random plot jumps.

Hmm, going out on a random limb here, but can't you make like a timeline?

Here is a one that reeks quality. Took my a few hours to make. Well at least 30 seconds...

You get the idea though, would that work? You could list the page number where each event line connects to the time line, like on the above image the event "becoming king of the mountain" connects to the timeline at two points and by each connection it would say exactly where, like "page 12" and "page 82".

Is that what you mean by outline... or am I way off in my own little park? :-s

I was thinking of your idea as a kind of last resort, or a different form of my idea (as I'm trying to make mine somewhat chronological as well) but I was thinking more along the lines of an outline that has categories that divide into subcategories, to make sure one gets the main idea of the plot simply by looking at it (like one you do for school, for notes). I suppose a timeline might be just as good... but it would be pretty frikkin' long ^_^' (which wouldn't help my goal of trying to make the story easier to understand at a glance, though it would help one remember the chronological order of things). I'm trying to get the story itself down to 3-4 Microsoft Word pages, but it's appearing quite difficult because of all the randomness in the webcomic :| . That's why I consider the races to be useful- they're seperated into pretty good, even intervals, and a lot of the plot has to do with them, including the side stories. The only problem is the last part, and the parts that have absolutely nothing to do with cars/racing...

Oi. My brain hasn't hurt this much since I tried to fully comprehend the thought processes of the cat-and-mouse game between L and Raito...

Yes, I can smell it from way over here. It is an interesting idea, though. Maybe as a sort of visual aid to Reb's outline?

Any of you guys read Abstract Gender too? :-k

You don't realise what Misfile has caused, have you? :uhh: Hundreds of hours have been lost to that comic, we don't want the same to happen with another one! :ohnoes:

Lol, nominated for post of the week.

Anyway I do read Abstract, as I mentioned in the other thread. I'm actually quite surprised that Misfile got all the attention while Abstract didn't even get mentioned by anyone till now. By the way guys, its not as addictive, it's more a fun quirky comic, like one you read in the newspaper.

Sorry to disagree with the thread, but I don't find it very good or funny. A good amount of the jokes center around the female body, and the drawings aren't quite up to par. The story however, is great, and that's what keeps me reading it.

The horror of that first sentence caused me to skip a beat o_O.

Then I finished reading the post, and was finally able to exhale. Compared to some other stuff I've seen, especially for a webcomic that updates daily, the drawing is hella good. Heck, there's no reason to even consider the compensations, the drawings are great. What do you find that's wrong with them?

And the comic isn't really about jokes, though it has it's moments- which makes the storyline even better. It's like a good book; it makes you laugh at times, but that's not what keeps you interested, that's just a bonus. It's the storyline, the plot, the problems that the main characters have to deal with that keep the reader hooked.

I know what you're saying, but since I read and speak Japanese fluently, I prefer reading professional stuff. This is great stuff, and I think I'll keep reading it if I don't have any, for lack of a better word, real comics.

Ah yes, I was thinking of mentioning manga, which is insanely good, but I felt it would be unfair to compare something that's sold to something that's free on the internet :P ('cause manga's are meant to be sold, not downloaded, so that loophole doesn't count, even if I'm guilty of it >_>).

Nonetheless, excluding FMA, this is the best storyline I've ever had the pleasure reading ::' .

Well, you know you can't have Chuck Close drawing for a free web-comic, do you? Other than that, I'd have to agree with Reb. The fun is just the "icing on the cake", and the most important things is the story (not its coherence, the story itself).

Although I do find some parts quite funny, once you keep in mind the protagonist still has the brain of a heterosexual guy. ::'
