Unreal Tournament: Simply, it revolutionized the Intense genre. I find it had far more polish that Quake 3 which came out around the same time. Unreal Tournament has great charecter animations, smooth movements, a great engine, and it really really gets you in the game. Great multiplayer with revolutionary modes, mutators make for lots of replay value, over 50 maps of fun. The graphics even today still are quite satisfactory and show no real signs of age compared to other games of the time. They are completely acceptable. And it's simply supreme over any other game when it comes to AI on the bots. They talk, they taunt each other, they dance when they kill someone, they use lots of strategies, they follow your strategies, immense AI. And I feel that this original game completely blew away its predessesor 2k3, and it beat 2k4 to a lesser extent. It's one of those games you just keep coming back to.

Diablo 1/2: These are for different reasons. Diablo one was generally chilling. Even when I play through it again years later, its just geniuinely scarier then most other games. The music and the environments perfectly set the mood, and instead of resorting to stupid jump out from a corner type of scaring, it's actually deeply scary.

Diablo 2 is just a great great game. There's so much replay value here, great story and this is probably the retail game I've played most. One of the big things though, is the Audio. This is by far the best game I've played ever for audio, the spells are just amazing, great music...Not as scary as Diablo 1, but still there's a good mood set...Soooo many items.

Deus Ex: Solid FPS, but it's the fact that it's so complex and there's so much to do that makes it effective. Strong RPG, Strong Shooting, Strong Adventure, Strong Stealth...There's everything here, really fun game indeed. Very interesting level design, lots of replay value as there's lots of choosing of skills etc. to do.

Half-Life 1/2: Half-Life one was such a revolutionary shooter, it can't be overlooked. Great storytelling, very action-packed throughout, and definately some of the best level design ever. Half-Life 2 further expanded with better storytelling, the best graphics ever, and some amazing features making it one of the best games ever. There's just nothing bad here in HL2, there's of the deepest storylines I've seen, great voice acting, again, some absolutely amazing level design, expecially since they have sooo much to work with here in their engine, it's just ana amazing game. CS:S built in was good for a few months of great fun, and Deathmatch was also kind of fun for a little bit.

Battlefield 1942: What can I say, solid in every aspect of gameplay, exceptional shooting, vehicular combat, and the epic size of the battles is extraordinary. Other than lack of single player campaign, and lack of singleplayer AI, there's not a single thing wrong with this game. Of course, it's a multiplayer based game, so those things don't matter.

Age of Empires/Age of Kings: Absolutely the most fantastic strategy game I've ever played. There's so many combinations here, so much gameplay, exceptional storyline and campaign, but that's not what it's about. The online has such grand games, there's such a feeling of being a king and creating a whole civilization, then combating with hundreds of units (lag free of course), and it's definately one of (maybe the) best strategy game(s) ever. Great map editor.

Warcraft 3: This is such a great game for some good times. Exceptional single-player, awesome mutli with good short games, just generally an amazing game. There's again, Blizzards amazingly amazing audio (though this isn't quite to Diablo 2's callibre). Great cutscenes, simple enough gameplay for the noobs, but also complex enough for the strategy experts, not very epic battles but lots of micromanagement. Overall exceptional.

Rainbow 6: You can't question the fun that's behind making a team of assorted people with different specialties, giving them things to do and watching them go. Or why not give yourself a challenge, play on elite, bring one charecter and try to do all the missions (which I'm currently doing, I'm about half way through). There's so much fun here. Rogue Spear just expanded on the experience, and had top-notch online play. It's very good. Ravensheild had emmense online funness factor, and I played for a very long time at it. These games have had immense impact, whether you like it or not.

Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City: For single player, there's few games to beat the amount of things you can do, and still have top-notch adventure, exciting shooting, great storyline and some immensely fun driving and crime times. These are just aso expansive, but you are feeling the action every single second. Vice City especially had an extremely awesome story, lots of extra missions past the campaign, and kept me entertained for weeks (on summer vacation, which is extremely rare). Great music, lots of fun but also some serious action here. Did I mention the voice acting? Some of the very best.

Max-Payne 2: These graphics are wicked-sick. Amazing physics, and some of the very best storytelling. It was just mindblowing the storytelling they had here. It had some AMAZINGLY fun gameplay, great bullet-time. This would quite possibly be the best game ever made had it had a longer gameplay, and possibly some Multiplayer. The gameplay was only like 8 hours worth, but while it lasted, it was absolutely incredible.

Chronicles of Rid[bleep]: Escape from Butcher Bay: This was a sleeper hit of 2004. It's got a Deus Ex kind of feel to it: futuristic RPG with shooter and stealth, with different ways of completeing your goals. Though it had slightly less adventuring and was less open ended, there was definately quite a bit of open-endedness to it, with different quest paths to go down. It had some of the very best voice acting both from the movie and not (Vin Diesal as Rid[bleep], Cole Houser as Johns (from Pitch black) and XZibit as the the head jail guards. The stealth elements put Deus Ex to shame, however, and though not as intricate as Splinter Cell, it's more fast paced and, there are definately very exciting times lurking in the shadows. How doesn't have fun sneaking around behind guys and breaking some necks? It's only a game, don't think I'm a sicko. It's also got some great RPG elements, and is definately fun. It also had a lot of different things happening at different times, and there's always something new, which keeps its VERY exciting the whole way through However, it is plagued by the same problem as Max Payne 2. It's fairly short at 10-15 hours of gameplay (with lots of replay value, though), with no online play.

Call of Duty: A lot a lot of fun single player, one of the best games to make you feel like you're actually there. Exceptional audio, great voice acting, solid shooting elements and incredibly cool levels. Though quite linear, the scripted events still prove for some increbly exciting times. The mutliplayer is nothing very special at all, and I would choose other games for my mutliplayer needs, but there's nothing at all wrong with the mutliplayer. It was fun for a little bit. However, the single player is exceptional.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Something about the levels in this game really excited me, mostly because they were all different. You didn't spend a lot of time in any one place as you were always going from different places to different places. It was really spectacular, and the scripted events were very exciting. I recall the most memorable, of which you were in a structure, and you step out onto a platform and see all these German paratroopers parachuting in, and then they enter and come to hunt you down. This game is very underrated, I had a killer time playing through it.

That's about all for now, I might think of more.

The Battlezone games, made before Pandemic's self-degradation of joining the console-gaming mainstream.

Speaking of Tribes 1 and 2, I prefer the latter, simply because I was exposed to it earlier. It really depends on which one you played first. I'm sure that those who were introduced to the franchise by playing Vengeance think that the first two games were horrible.

Settlers II- first pc game i'd ever seen, i got addicted to the gameplay, its so awsome, still one of the greats

The first Age of Empires- First pc game i'd ever bought, best game i've ever played, god knows how many wasted hours were spent just playing random maps on single player (multiplayer could of been better, but it was still awsome)

Pitfall- Who can forget this classic  , ok, bad graphics, but it was just so addictive!!

Every clan has their own requirements. Take DI for instance. Be a little kid with bad grammar that likes to flame and play runescape all day and you would be accepted.

^ sad but true :(

I'm going to say Half-Life/Half-Life 2, and Diablo II and the expan, simply for the unbelievable ammount of replay value.

Diablo II is still one of the biggest action rpgs out there, and it's been out for years and years.

Same with Half-Life.

Yeah, and Diablo 2 is still going, isn't it? It's got loads of new things; I went on it again about a month ago and discovered, to my surprise, a whole new thing: they've added synergy to skills, which really does improve the game. It's nice when people add things like that for free.

Synergy to skills?

eh, explain?

Yeah.. i haven't played Diablo II In forever... Kind of currious.

Also, I agree with most of Mr_Putter's choices. I my self didn't realy like GTA after a while ( I dunno.. i only killed and stole stuff, never did any of the storyline) but those others were great choices.

And Unreal Tournament... oh man does that game get crazy. I've played Ut 2004 a bit, and i have to say, sometimes you have no idea what in the world is going on. It realy is an interesting, and fun, experiance.

and also, I'd like to put out another game no one mentioned:

Medal of Honor-Aliied assault : Realy... the medal of honor serries was nearly what started the huge "WW-II" game craze. and it was a game that for its time was amazing, realy an engrossing fps.

I might add some more stuff later, to this post and my first one. I have to think. There realy are alot of "great" games that paved the way for others. oh yeah.. i have one:

Duke Nukem 3D- Hell, what can i say, this game was fun. I mean.. it realy was one of those games that was so well... anyways, it was an awsome game. It realy didn't have much of a story line, but gawd, your shooting big wagon aliens and saving nude chicks, what more would you want?

Definitly a good game. And i had fun making levels for it back in the day too.

Half Life - Revolutionary

Warcraft 2 - First good RTS, In my opinion

Counter-Strike - First great online FPS

Worms 2 - Agree with earlier poster, this game rocks and is fun to play with friends. Takes so much stradegy, tactics, and is definatly a unique experience.

Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory - Free online FPS, has the BEST maps ever. Thats right, they are the best I have played to date. Download 'Temple' and you can see the awesomeness.

World of Warcraft - Best MMORPG to date

Half Life 2 - Revolutionary physics and graphics

Yeah.. i haven't played Diablo II In forever... Kind of currious.

Adding points to one skill powers up other skills. Ex- A Paladin's Fist of Heavens attack gets extra lightning damage when you add points into holy shock, and extra undead-damage when you add points to holy bolt. Its fun for a while, but it also really limits what you can do, because some skills were nerfed to make synergizing them not bring the power over the top.

Starsiege: Tribes and Counter Strike are the only 2 PC games that I'd want to play ever again. Screw the "revolutionary" games and junk, those two were just fun.

Edit Oh crap! I read Nadril's post and remembered Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - GOD that was a fun game, as well as it's expansions, Spearhead and Breakthrough. Breakthrough kicked so much [wagon] because of the Liberation mode; single rounds would last an hour with all of the grenades and bullets flying everywhere in an attempt to kill everyone on the other team...And it SOUNDED so awesome, too! :D

in order or 3rd favorite to best game of all time...

#3 - LightHouse/Myst I never played Myst that much, but I liked the game style and Light House built on it with a cool plot and a fun setting.

#2 - Final Fantasy 7 Practically tied for my #1 spot, this game is simply undescribable in words. Literally hundreds of reasons why this game stands head and shoulder above any other RPG known to man. ;)

#1 - Red Alert(the original). My god you people don't want to know how many days of my life were spent to that game.

While I'm not debating FFVII's greatness (for it is great), I don't think it should be named the best RPG of all time. Certainly one of the best games of all time, but the RPG elements aren't a patch on other RPG games, some of which have been listed by people further up (inc. me). One might argue that it's very RPG-ish because you play such a big role in it (ie. there's so much involving story), I would class that as an adventure game, as there's only one possible route to take. Obviously it's an RPG, not an adventure game, but the story isn't as RPGy as games like Morrowind or Baldur's gate, where one has much more freedom as to what to do, story wise. Oh, Deus Ex too: that's the sort of RPG I'm talking about: one where what you decide has more than just aesthetic effect.

Once again, I'm not trying to badmouth FFVII, which I'd number amongst my top favorite games. Feel free to correct me, as I'm probably missing the point.

FFVII is definitely the most overrated game of all time. OF ALL TIME!

Now why would the game that spawned the majority of the millions of Final Fantasy fans be any good?

Why would the single most innovative game visually for its time be any good?

Why would a game that had cinematic scenes years ahead of its time be any good?

Why would a game with one of the most innovative and enthralling soundtracks ever be any good?

Why would a game with a plot good enough to make grown men cry over a characters death be any good?

Why would a game good enough to have a feature length movie made out of it be any good?

Why would a game with possibly the best re-play value of any RPG ever be any good?

The real question is why on Earth trolls like you would say anything remotely bad about one of the best RPG's ever made?

No he did not say "FF VII sucks" but it was implied. Saying a good game is over-rated implies that it is an average or bad game, neither of which in any way apply to FF VII.
