MechScape- Is a new MMORPG a good idea for JaGex?

Featured Replies

I dont think "mech scape" is a good idea,

but runescape could use a few touch ups

but a whole new game? naw bad idea

It is not a "dumb" little town Shivers!!!

blizzard did it and they are successful still.

this will be a mmorpg im 100% sure and i predict after a full year it will have 1/5 of the players and account that runescape has.

i can picture it already, a game with similarities for runescape but just for a different crowd, rune weapons would be a lvl 1 weapon, abbysal whips are for lvl 2 noobs, godsword is for lvl 5, then you get some robotic whip with carbonoxide coating.

you will probably have different robot types to choose from to start off, but i doubt its going to be the same as runescape, i think its a good idea anyway.

everyone here is just scared because they are getting lvl 99 in a bunch of skills no one cares about anyway but they will respect it for 10 seconds or so, jagex doing this will be the best for their company.

and even some people out there take breaks from runescape and feel like quitting runescape, those people might even decide to try out this new mmorpg and you can visit there to see your friends again.

the only bad thing about this will be people wanting to sell rs gold to buy mechscape gold.

Jagex only has one product earning them money. Online games come and go, and one day RuneScape will reach the end of its lifespan. It's natural that Jagex will want another leg to stand on, otherwise the end of RuneScape will bring the end of Jagex. So Jagex will want to get another product on the market, something new to pay the bills. Two sources of income are better than one; it doesn't mean that they've decided to wind up RuneScape.

There is, of course, the risk that loads of RuneScapers will permanently abandon RuneScape to play MechScape. Jagex should be able to avoid that if they pitch MechScape differently enough. They could give it a higher censorship rating! Besides, a lot of people genuinely prefer classical fantasy to sci-fi.

Second, the problems that exist in RuneScape can be resolved, but not just as quickly or easily as many of us would like them to be. Creating a new game doesn't solve a damn thing; just creates a host of new problems for another platform.

Just explaining myself here, when I say that they can fix RuneScape's problems, I didn't mean they would actually FIX RuneScape, I ment they would start over and make a new game that didn't have the problems RuneScape had.

And JaGex has a good reason to do this, because many of RuneScape's faults are what keep many people out of RuneScape, and sometimes these faults cause players to leave (yes I understand that the #1 reason for people leaving RS is because they run out of things to do and are bored... but still, we lose a few because they are angry and some fault or problem). If they make a new game without these faults, they can bring in ALOT more people. I'm not trying to say they can fix RuneScape itself...

I can't really agree with you on the fact that all problems on RuneScape can be resolved, because to me it seems like it's really too late on most of them, especially the combat system. Even if JaGex could just fix all of RuneScape's problems, they can also improve apon it...

The only way this game will be good is if:

1) Jagex makes the majority of their updates for the high-level player base.

2) Jagex nixes that "higher is not better" bullcrap that holds back RS. If I spend the time getting to a high level, I do NOT want to be beaten by a lower level with far inferior stats. The same applies to skills.

3) Jagex actually expends some money into decent Customer Support. That is one of the biggest problems with RS.

4) Jagex makes the game based on skill, not luck. This ties into the "higher is not better" thing, but is a little different. Everything in RS is based on luck, from performing skill-based activities such as Agility, to drops. Skills are practically worthless for making money in RS, with the exception of Rune Crafting.

I can agree with you on #2-4, but #1 bugs me. It's true that JaGex hasn't come out with any high level things, and I think they should make more, but they're also trying to make things for low levels to do, because when you think about it, here's what a low level can do:

1. Kill a cow with a crappy looking dagger.

2. Kill chickens over and over again for feathers.

3. Do some boring quests.

4. Start mining ess.

Think about what you, as a high level, have to do. You can play a number of quests, even though you might not enjoy them, some people do. You got a number of dragon weapons, and yes, you've most likely gotten them all, but it's alot more interesting compaired to what a low level has. You have a lot of land to travel over, minigames you can play without being yelled out of, and a variety of different things to do with your skills.

Now I know, you earned those things and you were once a low level. But then again, you were one of the lucky ones that decided to stick around. Many people today join RuneScape, kill a cow, jump to the conclusion that there's nothing to do on this game (one of my friends thought that all you did was walk around picking up food :x ), and they quit. Jagex is just trying to keep some members!

In my opinion, JaGex should just make something for everybody, then they wouldn't have this problem.

Forgive me but why is this even an issue when all we know about the game is its name and the fact that Jagex registered the trademarks of potential fansites and cheatsites? We know NOTHING about its content, nor the style of game, nor the time of its release. I know speculation can in some cases be healthy, but why is the potential quality and success of this game being judged from its title alone?

Jagex have copyrited that name, yes, although they may not make it into a game but it seems eneviatble. There are some concept are of some mechscape animals. Its meant to be futuristic but it wont be compared to RuneScape. It will be a completely different game but will use the same java enabled online play.

I dont mind if it is released or not :)

Well awsome. They have plenty of experience to build on. Could be good. The rumours about this seem to get louder, so i guess they are really doing this. Basically it just is a matter of time anyway. Who wants to work on only one game forever?

About the financial issue.. Jagex is a private compay that is owned by Andrew and his brother Paul Gower. They can do whatever they want with it. Sure they probably won't make decisions that would immideately jeopardize the jobs of all their employees. Other then that though, considering that they are set for live (estimated to be worth 100 Million Pounds (i wish i would have the source at hand... EDIT: Oh.. that's even on wikipedia)), they can do whatever they find interesting. What could be interesting to game designers? Making a new game probably =P

I'd say that the best-case scenario is probably the most likely to happen.

A new game will bolster Jagex's profits and improve their reputation (mostly the latter).

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:
IMO this may seem ignorant but...

Runescape:WoW::Mechscape:Starcraft

I had the same exact thoughts.
Well, JaGex Is mostly concered for scam and real world trading sites. They did add RuneHQ (or MechHQ, I should say), and I have no idea why they didn't make a tip.it/mechscape... Maybe they like us?

They love the TipIters! Whats not to love about us?

I predict that RS will stay alive--some people just don't like sci-fi.

But I do hope that all the "the graphics suck" noobs will be siphoned away to MechScape.

lol lets face the facts. Claims have been going around saying runescape will only last 5 more years. With new games comming out, how can runescape keep fighting the competition? Rs already loses many players after someone hits their first 99s or accomplishes a very hard task, then they hop to games like WoW or Guild Wars(games with better graphics in general), with mechscape comming out, runescape will lose the attension and love. Mechscape can come out. Runescape shouldn't die. We all want that but is it possible?

-Autoers will leave runescape alone but hackers may not. Usually when games start losing attention the companies don't pay much for hack pervention. Simple hack progs can be used to hack games, and so people will leave runescape and if they hate mechscape, the jagex game industry will lose face among blizzard.

~I personally perfer runescape be made into a downloadable private and online server game. I would pay for it too if needed, who wouldn't. A one time pay would be a solution for a game that is dying out and i always wanted to play alone 8-) . Also i think mechscape is a horrible idea as of now(sorry jagex and players), i can change my mind later but as far as im concerned i don't wanna see runescape die out.

~Runescape is like a game you can talk to your son about. You can discuss "back in my day" topics and talk about the differences between then and now. Its like football. Comparing the old teams to the current ones. We don't want runescape to die  .

Another Mechscape thread.

Well I'm thinking I'll just play both (if it's good). I don't think runescape will die tbh.

I'm dreading the day it comes out.I really really hope RuneScape doesn't die :(

RuneScape has too many players anyway. It'll do fine!

Avatar by Unoalexi!

I prefer science fiction to fantasy. I'm sure many others also enjoy sci-fi and so the new game will be very popular. I doubt it will be quite as successful as RS though.

A lot of people moan that Runescape should be reset, well this is their chance to start on a level playing field lol.
