Emofury
The knee jerk reaction to the death of high-stakes duels was terrible yesterday, and many people are furious at Jagex for taking away a fun minigame. Originally, I too thought this was a bad decision. I felt they were cannibalizing their product, and that killing off this minigame would do little to discourage GP Farmers, since there are too many other ways to transact. At some point last night, more information was brought to my attention, which triggered a stream of thoughts leading to an epiphany. This Update has NOTHING to do with GP Farmers! The Duel Arena was unique in that it was the -only- place a player could conceivably "earn" up to 300 million in ten minutes. Theoretically one could win *MORE*, but I hadn't seen stakes higher than that. I mean, that's huge. Unfortunately, many stakers became very, very, VERY rich. Opulence to the point of conspicuous consumption, and, ultimately, profit. These same stakers who could bring in several hundred million GP per day could turn that over in exchange for several hundred US dollars per day. Consider a player who can make 200M per day to sell. If they sold it to a distributing company (we all know who offers these services), they could bring in 400 dollars a day, which translates to roughly 100K US dollars per year. Quite lucrative, at least, on the surface. The Casino Environment This also creates a "Casino" environment, a very slippery slope for Jagex. They cannot really prove who is selling what to whom, and what trades are legit and which ones aren't. There are too many false accusations that indemnify them in these cases. As a result, you have people playing Runescape for VERY HIGH STAKES. Consider someone who stakes for these high rates. You never win every time, regardless of what gear you have or what your stats look like. You're also dealing with high stakes - in order to compete with the big cash earners, you will need to invest a lot of money. Ugh... Cleaned! We've seen it time and time again. A player claims to be "cleaned", and shows up the next day, staking furies, dragon chainbodies, or even party hats. Are we to believe they legitimately made 200 million RS Gp in a day? Of course not. These people are buying back in. These people are buying massive amounts of RS gold that they gamble with. Winners here can make thousands of dollars, but losers LOSE thousands of dollars. This creates a series of VERY real, legitimate problems for Runescape: The people incurring debt are doing it illegally using the product of Jagex, and Jagex had to be aware of this. The people incurring debt are often 12-17 years old, and are not legally liable for these debts incurred. These kids rack up big deficits on fraudulently created credit cards, which are then defaulted. These credit card companies are NOT going to take their losses quietly. So when this spiral of abuse and casino-style mass loss transpires, who do credit card companies, personal lawyers (in a society where no one has personal accountability) and surprised (and debt-liable) parents who recently incurred a 5,000 RS gold bill turn? They turn to Jagex. Simply put, if Jagex -DIDN'T- kill staking, they would risk massive lawsuits, including possible class-action files, and likely the very livelihood of Jagex and Runescape. There is a very strong chance these suits could have completely killed Runescape. Thank you very much to Goku Nazz! Still an awful update? =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> I recently read this, and thought i would share it with u guys, this completely makes sense as to why jagex would just kill staking imo.. <--- free rs guides by me lawlRip emofury 11/20/

jackdog45
Good point, I wasn't thrilled when Jagex first said that, but I knew that they must have their reasons, and you showed them very well. It wasn't my favorite update, but it definately was necessary and I commend Jagex for doing it despite what people would say. nah i dont feel like puttin anything here

Nhs_Xc
I think there is some truth behind it. I do know people who staked and sold thier profits (but it would be like 20m a day instead of 200m). I'm sure this isn't realy a common practice though and I wish they would raise the cap. Artificial_Doom_Flavor
I suppose the disclaimer that Jagex is not responsible for your kids going on their website isn't adequate, nor is their claim on Runescape gold as the company's property that is by law not to be bought or sold for real world money; nor are parents accountable for allowing their child unrestricted access to the internet, preventing them from creating fraudulent credit cards, or raising their kids not to take risks they cannot afford to take; nor are kids accountable for their actions which they DO understand the full consequences of yet choose to engage in anyway. I would think that even if someone attempted to sue Jagex, they would neither be legally nor ethically obligated to take the step that they did (I am assuming "ethics" to mean the principles by which most rational societies currently operate). neocrosby
WOW! all I can say is WOW. (wow as in the expression of amazement, not World of warcraft, thankyou very much.) A lot has happened in my Absence from Runescape. I am beginning to bash myself in the head. Why did I quit Runescape to work my day off to make about $7,000 when I could of kept playing it and made $100,000+ a year. #-o HAHA \ [combat level: 124][skill total: 1,800+][quest points: 260][Mining: ??]AFTER 8 YEARS OF PLAYING - PERM BANNEDGo Vegan! Peronix
That makes perfect sense, and to be honest I don't think people should even be making 300m a day even for legitimate use like skilling. But that dosen't change the fact that the 3k cap is completely ridiculous. They could change it to 500k every 15 minutes and most of this "gambling" AND "covert RWTing" would still be stopped, since the cash/day wouldn't be that high and it would be more convenient for RWTers to use the trade system to transfer mills. Exactly. And it is this obvious disconnect between what Jagex claims is its motivation and simple logic that leads people to disbelieve what they say. The company is not being honest. I am fully in support of Jagex stopping the huge high-stakes gambling that was going on at the DA. I am NOT in support of them destroying reasonable staking and then lying about why they did it. SwreeTak
It's a good theory you have, and it might be true that Jagex took away it because of the exchange from gp into real cash. But I'm not sure of that this is the reason. Add me if you so wish: SwreeTak
baron8000
Whoever wrote this hasn't got the foggiest how English law works unfortunately. 1) Jagex has a near watertight disclaimer - that is more than enough to protect it - you forget that Jagex is a incredibly rich company, more than capable of hiring top lawyers. 2) The simple fact is the logic doesn't follow - trying to sue Jagex because people lost money in it would be like credit card companies trying to sue casinos when their customers lose money, it just doesn't work like that. 3) There is one HELL of a jump from "people buy gold" -> "people are usually 12-17" -> this gold is usually bought with a fraudulent credit card. That is one hell of an assumption to make - I had a internet-viable card from 14 which I could have used I assume, such a huge leap in reasoning cannot be made without evidential basis. Sorry, but the theory is incorrect.
glasscube
Also, the fact that the guy claims that people 'buy' themselves back into staking after being cleaned is quite funny. It was so easy - if you were decent at staking, to get a glory after 30 minutes of chopping yews and keep doubling that - esspecially mage staking at the lower levels. It is not beyond my belief that someone could make 30m in a day from 50k IF THEY WERE WILLING TO TAKE THE RISKS. It only takes 20 stakes (about an hours work if you can find them decently fast) to go from 1 gp to 1 million. Why wouldn't you be able to do the same with 50k?
