Zombie Plans-Revised

True. I would wonder what the best gun would be for long ranged though. A semi or a bolt action rifle? Though I would go back to melee weapons for a bit. For instance wouldn't the trench spike be easily stuck in a zombies skull? Then again wouldn't it's short range make it very very easy for the zombie to bite you? Also wouldn't the small stab be partially ineffective in destroying parts of the brain?

Well, think of it like this.

The parasite needs a working human brain to infect. If you stab yourself in the head with a trench spike, I can guarantee that your brain will no longer be in working condition.

Therefore, the same should apply to an already infected human brain.

Trench spikes are also designed to puncture steel helmets, then be removed again with ease. Realistically, you never want to get close to the zombie, but sometimes ammo wouild just be too precious, and if it's one or two zombies, it should be a piece of cake to dispatch anyway.

(Ah sorry I was talking about the max brooks type zombie) I am still not quite sure that if you stabbed it in the head it would do enough damage (Remeber to kill it with a sword at least according to the guide you have to either decapitate it or stab it through the eye and make a swirling motion) (On a completely different note are you having trouble sleeping ross?)

For the apocalypse, the best weapons would be:

Ak-47

M4

Ruger Mini 14

Then either a .357 revolver, or a .45 or 9mm pistol.

Reasoning:

Ak-47:

Rugged, reliable. Very common ammunition. Powerful. Easy to fix.

M4: Light. Accurate (ish), very common ammunition. Easyish to find parts for at military bases.

Ruger: Accurate.

Assault rifles are superior to semi and bolt, if you're not a [wagon].

Why?

1) Humans are more dangerous than zombies. If you fight a raider, you don't want a bolt action.

2) I know it's not recommended, but backed against a wall with them a second away, you'll kill more firing in bursts without much aiming than precise single shots.

3) Generally larger magazines.

4) More customization (Good luck finding one, but you can get an underbarrel shotgun for an m4)

Now then, each gun serves a purpose. A sniper rifle is probably better bolt action, simply because jamming is less likely. A shotgun is usually better pump, since it regulates your ROF, and is more reliable and common.

For pistols, you can either have around a 17 round clip (9mm glock) or a 6 (or 8 if you're very lucky) round 100% reliable revolver. Both 357, 9mm, and .45 acp are all very common.

In my opinion, I'd prefer the following guns for the following roles:

Sniper:

Primary: Ruger Mini 14

Secondary: Colt 1911

Scavenger (should work in atleast groups of two)

Primaries: Benneli m4 or Remington 870, and (person 2) Ak variant or m4.

Good point :ohnoes: . So how about a melee weapon? I would doubt a trench spike would be any good against a human with a gun. Though I guess the amount of raiders would differ from place to place (I doubt you would find that many in siberia for instance). Speaking of locations if you learned how to survive there and got the proper equipment how good would be the mongol steppes?

That was a rapier/fencing sword. They have incredibly thin blades, and you wouldn't really be able to through the skull with a slash.

Ross, there can't be a silenced shotgun.

A shotgun works by basically breaking the cartridge within the barrel, a silencer would either be ripped apart of defeat the point of a shotgun, firing lots of bullets in the same directions

Whoops, you were bieng sarcastic, i'll leave it in the post anyway.

With a zombie apocalypse it wouldn't just be zombies you'd have to worry about, there would also be people you'd have to worry about.

First things first, what do people want.

Food, Drugs, Medical Drugs, Tobacco, Alchohol and guns.

I'd recomend carrying lots of cigs around, if you meet people you can trade these for things you need.

These are your currency.

People's nature is to survive and your going to have a job getting them not to shoot you if they see you. Be careful of people aswell as zombies.

if you plan to go anywhere carry a couple of grenades/dynamite, light kevlar and one handed gun.

If you see a large concentration of zombies use the grenade or dyamite to blast them out of the way, this WILL kill a couple but not for long, run through them and shoot anyones that try to get up, be careful.

Best place to hide = Prison.

Lock the doors to the exersise yard and you'll find there is enough food inside for a long time. if there are prisoners get them out by shooting in the air, shoot any ones that refuse in the head.

American prisons will have watchtowers and gun.

Silencers are good because they make guns quieter. Go outside, into some place like the woods. Now, imagine zombies going after every single sound. That doesn't make any sense, whatsoever. Their instincts probably would tell them to go after human sounds, or atleast animal sounds. A silencer will make the area in which zombies can hear you a lot smaller. Also, if there are raiders, scavengers, etc. around, it makes it much less likely they'll hear you're gunfire. If nothing else, it can reduce recoil too.

Someone mentioned the beowulf. That would be the worst choice ever. For a start, I don't think anyone here really understands what a .50 is.

For a start, here's a comparison of the .50 Beowulf (what that shoots) and what a m16 (or m4, or m249, or g36, scar L, etc.) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c7/Beowulf_Cartridges.JPG/320px-Beowulf_Cartridges.JPG.

.50 is just the diameter of the bullet, and not all .50's are the same.

Here's a .50 bmg, the most famous .50 cal cartridge, fired from the M2, and "Barrett 50 cal (really m82). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/84/Rifle_cartridge_comparison_w_scale.png/300px-Rifle_cartridge_comparison_w_scale.png

Notice the round second from the right is the 5.56, the one the .50 beowulf was compared to.

Now, lastly, good luck finding ANY .50 cal bullets of any type. Most need to be special ordered through catalogs or the internet.

In any case, larger caliber doesn't mean better. It means way more recoil, and sorer shoulders and wrists. For example, during Vietnam (I think) one of the standard rifles was the m14, which at the time was fully automatic with 7.62x51 rounds. They found soldiers were completely unable to fire them accurately after the first shot, so that's why they modifed them to be only possible to fire in semi. That's also why even on a smaller round, the 5.56, modern m16's can only be fire in bursts or semi, because it's near impossible to hit anything on full auto except at very close range. The only real use of full auto is suppressive fire, and that doesn't work against zombies.

Anyways, higher caliber means, in general, less availability, more weight, more recoil, and louder noise.

Good point. Though wouldn't a .12/.22 caliber gun be the best you can get due to availability/ lack of recoil? Anyways I should probably brush up on my archery (Hex in the later stages a prison would be a very bad idea simply because they tend to be in populated areas which means you could get ~100,000 zombies around it if things go to hell)

Doesn't anyone think that a fully sustainable tank would be a good idea? Yah know, one with life support systems like a spaceship, and the large turret replaced by a smaller close-ranged turret? Probaly not affordable, but if you really wanted the best... :)

Retech if you could afford that... then buy a [bleep]ing airship (Like Hindenburg style but using helium not hydrogen) it will get you to safety far easier and can be completely silent. Also would you not run out of food in that tank if it got knocked over?

Maybe it could even have bacteria feeding on waste, to allow you to grow supercrops for you to eat. And you could just go chugging along over zombies.

It still could in theory get stuck or tipped over and you do not want to get out of it. Also the super crops would require both time and water to grow which may be in short supply. Seriously if you can afford a super tank you can afford an airship. The only difference is that the latter has a very good chance of getting you to safety if properly stocked.

Tanks require massive support crews. You'd need repairs every day of use, and tons of fuel. A truck would be better, or armored car.

.22 or even .17hmr aren't that great, because at long ranges they probably wouldn't pierce the skull. However, they do have their place, .22lr rifles could be used at medium range, an also be pretty useful for practicing shooting.

Don't confuse .22lr and .223 by the way, .223 is the civilian version of 5.56x45.

Now that I think about it, could zombies get you if you...lived in a dome several thousand miles below the ocean surface? :D

Preliminary Plan of Escape:

Grab super tank and drive it over to the coast

Detach pod with me inside, connecting to super submersible

Submersible goes to my super houses deep under the sea

Park near a volcanic vent, using kelp as bacteria food, to use as nutrients for various crops. Volcanic vent power!

I still don't understand why you care about anything greater than medium range. Any more than that really isn't a threat to you.

Against people, for example. Also, .22 against people won't do [cabbage]. Umm, .22 is less accurate than large calibers except up close. I guess that's enough reason to stay away from that as a primary.

Ok, beowolf may not be practically viable, though it would definately be the most effective zombie killer.

Dual P90s however would be great, low recoil, common bullets, large magasines where you can see the bullets, flash supressor and availability for scilencers as well as an ambidextrous design, it is even used by some law enforcements and is thus not too uncommon in itself.

No, but if a guy 200 yards away is shooting at me, then yes.

No it wouldn't, a bastardized .50ae won't kill a zombie any more than a .45acp.

And no they wouldn't. Low accuracy, and dual wielding is beyond pointless.
