ixfd64
QF: 27-28-21-54719856 I've heard of people killing themselves over getting banned or hacked, but this is the first time I've heard of someone committing suicide over an update. I hope this isn't true. :\ My friend, John Davidston, has killed himself today, Decmber 10th, 2007. This is not a lie, as he was depressed due to other facts in his life, weather it be his abusive father, or his failing grades. His account, which will not be named, had been given to me randomly today. I was confused why Jay would give me his account after he played so long, and I mean long. He played for 6 years, it was the place where he would escape, to get away, and he loved it. Runescape, a place where he wouldn't be judged for who he was, but for what he did, and let me tell you now, he was a heck of a guy. I received a [phone] call from John's mother at about 8:10 PM eastern standard time, that my friend, John Davidston never came home at 5 after work like he usually does. I told her I hadn't spoken to him since earlier in the morning, when he gave me his account. I got another [phonecall] by John's neighbour, at about 9:30PM, and was informed of the tradjedy..my friend John was found, dead at the park where we used to play as children. I will not go into details about it. One of my best friends, was gone, forever. Leaving loved ones behind to escape once and for all from the agonies of his life. His funeral will be held on Thursday of this week, and I along with another friend will be attending. I'm not saying that it was just Runescape which caused him to do it, but I'm pretty sure the game was a large factor, and now I'm just going to say a few words about Jay. Determined: Jay man, you never gave up once since I've known you, stay strong brother Kind: You would never hurt a fly, and you were the kindest person I ever and will ever meet. Unforgettable: Don't worry bud, I won't ever forget you, no one who knew you will, and you will always be close to my heart, even though you are physically gone, you remain with me spiritually. For best friends, I love you man, and you deserved better. feel free to sign in memory of John Davidston bestfriend [Mod Edit: Please try to keep all RL events related to this update in this topic please ~misterxman] ARENAscape: Baratus [AS] max hit: 166 with Moon Battle Hammer ixfd64 [AS] max hit: 116 with (untitled spell #2)

berbatovsky
Look if someone kills themselves over an UPDATE to a GAME then they weren't going to last long anyway. I would not be (that)surprised if this was a CATALYST for someone killing themselves, but there would have to be existing problems (I.e:no ones goes from happy{or even miserably depressed} to suicidal over a game). ixfd64
The original poster said that the game wasn't likely to be the cause of suicide. It was more of a straw that broke the camel's back. 777thzapster
Wow, I don't want to be too harsh, but if you kill yourself over a game you shouldn't be alive. If one major update in runescape can make someone commit suicide, then there is something else going on besides runescape. I really wish people would grow up and realize this isn't the end of the world or Runescape for a matter of fact.
Tim
wow, i may have depression of a high priority and played rs for 6 years but this was imo a big impact he had. and like your story states they dont know weather it was the game at fault (though if it was he should have seeked help before something this drastic) also berbatovsky, some things, even a game, can trigger an emotion in us thats best to be chained down for our lives sake and if it was runescape then he was unfortunate to have a weak chain. personally i hate being poor and fail at all but i come to understand its a game, you cant win at it or be good at a game with more floors then bill gates' dining hall. G_P_Kid
I searched for the name and multiple keywords on Yahoo! search, came up with nothing. It was probably fake, however if that is what it takes to grab Jagex's attention then I guess we see what kind of game is being ran here.

He's right, if your mind is in such a fragile state and no one cares enough to notice and try to help, you are better off dead. I don't think he meant 'I'm glad he's dead' more 'he'd of died anyway' Edit: Of course this is tragic, but lets get real MILLIONS of people kill themselves every year, for one the human brain is incredibly complex and some people just can't handle 'life', for two many people are treated AWFULLY and really death is a release. This world is a dichotomy of the sublime and the tragic, and unfortunately this stuff happens, some people are better off dead. :( :( :( :(
Darkan420
If the kid was so screwed up that something that is hardly real is what "broke the camel's back" then I actually feel sorry for him for not having loved ones who cared and knew him enough to see the signs. EugenyG
I express condolences to the victim and his family. That being said (and this comes from someone who hates the new update), I do not think you can blame Jagex. You can't hold the company responsible for the possible unpredictable reactions of their customers. Does the update suck? Yes, for me and many others at least, including the victim probably. Were they stupid in making this update? Maybe, although I give them much more credit than most people when it comes to caring about their own profit. Are they morally responsible for his death? No. Imagine if someone came up to you on the street and said "give me money or I'll kill myself". Even if you believe they speak the truth, that simply does not morally oblige you to cooperate. The parents, on the other hand, at a minimum have a huge moral burden over the event, and at a maximum may be legally or even criminally liable, depending on the circumstances (such as the "abusive father"). You could also blame our dear government for not doing turd until after someone died, and the only doing a half-assed reactive job which won't carry any benefit to the next victim. But as I said, Jagex is not a party of who to blame, regardless of whether his suicide was caused by the update or not. Live free or die. First option is exhausted, so guess what remains? Ghost-Knigth
If RuneScape was his way to escape from his problems in real life it surely could have played a factor. But still I think it was just a very little part of his problems. It was the drop that made the cup flood over (dunno if that metaphor works in English). Sorry to hear :( 99 ranged | 99 magic | 99 defence | 99 hitpointsRemember, it's just a gameFeel free to add me on RS. :) Always ready for a chat. sined_starbo
Most online games have their own urban myths or truths about someone dying/suiciding over a game update or losing valuable game items. Do I believe this one not sure, but am I bothered no not at all. Jagex RS or anything releated to the game is no way toblame for the persons state of mind if any blame is to be cast it would have to go on the parents, teachers or carers for not noticing the persons fragile state.
