Oh, please. If it's true, it's sad for his family and for himself. But it hasn't anything to do with Runescape and Jagex cannot be held culpable for a tragedy like this. As such, this sort of news is completely meaningless. Threatening with suicide is not only stupid adolescent behaviour, it's also very offensive.

 

 

 

Need an analogy? If my boyfriend tells me he doesn't love me anymore, sorry darling, and I decide to throw myself off a bridge, I am the one to blame for my sillyness, not my boyfriend for leaving me. If I simply threaten to commit suicide so he'll stay with me, I'm a bloody psychopath.

That was only because my original post contained "good riddance" which is a bit harsh even though I KNOW the story is fake.

 

 

 

The whole story reminds me of when I was about 14/15 and tried to write like I was serious, it's a fake, I'll be my 3,000gp trade limit on it, oh god did i bring up the update?!

 

 

 

I don't get why you would accept that runescape is a reasonable 'escape' for somebody, i'm fed up of the whole emo mentality of needing to escape, everybody has problems, just get over it. Jesus.

I do not understand the people on these forums that say ''better die with a wrecked life'' or wtf.

 

If John's life was so wrecked and he could only hang on by playing rs, it was perfectly acceptable. It's perfectly imaginable that for one to survive, he has to have at least ONE thing that makes him happy at least FOR SOME time.

 

In this case, it was rs. I know that he would, after some time, find some other great pages of his life. ( from my xp I know )

 

 

 

Anyway, I feel really sad for him, though I can't decide wherever it's fake or not.

If this story is true, it's very sad... but it isn't Runescape's fault. If he committed suicide because of Runescape, then even if this update did not happen, I daresay something will soon trigger him off and he'll commit suicide anyway. Runescape wasn't the cause, it was the switch: and someone on the verge of suicide can grab anything as a switch. Runescape just happened to come along.

I'm sorry to say it but you should check out RSOF more. I've read stupid posts saying stuff like "My brother killed himself from this new update" and so on.

If this was you, and your friend killed himself. Would you within 24 hours of the death taken place, make a post on a RuneScape forum talking about it? I doubt it. Other parts of this story don't really make sense. All of a sudden this guy got his friends account? Umm... from where??

 

 

 

Now if this is real, I am sorry but I highly doubt it was over a game update. It said he was already under pressure from other things in real life so it would have been from that.

Thats what i think, if a game can make you commit sucied, then there is something wrong with you. I mean i can understand grades, problems at school or home, but a game?? i havent read the entired lot of replys, but there is websites available for runescape, that if u get banned, they provide u with a written appeal to send to jagex, im not sure if they have been changed or not, but apparently the jagex censor ATLEAST used to pick up on the word 'suicide' amongst other words, so these people pretend to be suicidal to get their accounts back, if this is real, then it could of been anything to be the icing on the cake.

If one major update in runescape can make someone commit suicide, then there is something else going on besides runescape. It does make Runescape around 10X easier though with the gravestones. The trade update...well that's messed up. Wildy 40% smaller i guess you still have room to pk. I dunno. I'm still thinking about all the updates..was like 5 in one day..

On another forum someone recently posted how a friend of theirs committed suicide after being harassed online but they were also being harassed at school, constantly yelled at by their parents, and helped by noone. It's not the internet, the forums, or the online games that cause the problem. It's the world outside of the internet that starts it and the failure of people around them to realize the problem and help. Such use of the internet to escape reality to that extent is not the cause but a symptom. It's not jagex fault or anyone else's online when those closest to the person fail to see the symptoms and act on them.

I've read articles about debates over whether videogames can be classified as a legitimate addiction or not, and I would fully agree that it is an addiction. People use it as a coping mechanism, a way to escape from the real world. Even I've struggled with it when I've had serious depression, and I've seen friends struggle with it as well.

 

 

 

Looking at it from that perspective, I don't find it ridiculous that someone would commit suicide over a game. Instead, I just think it's sad when someone's suffering like that and doesn't get the help they need.

I may have only known two people that died (still more than most), but in my experience and common sense, this whole story is a complete fabrication.

 

So, you hear about your close 'friend' committing suicide, and that very same day of his death you deciede to make a post on the Runescape Official Forum about it..? I know some people in this world can be like that though, so, moving on..

 

You're probably the parents/guardians of this boy, and on the day of his death you announce the funeral to be held just 2 days later. Talk about getting it over and done with, eh. :|

 

 

 

 

 

Once again, I know this world is heavily populated, and despite my.. disbelief of it all, I'm sure that in some backwater town there are probably people who do this kind of thing.

 

 

 

If the case of this suicide turns out to be the truth, then I agree with what others have said; this boy shouldn't have been alive in the first place.

 

I especially agree with Sumpta's analogy of her boyfriend dumping her, and then blaming her resulting suicide on him.

 

 

 

 

 

If you've chosen to use the internet as your escape from reality then to be honest you deserve whatever you get from the seemingly limitless stupidity, cruelty and ignorance of people online.

i remember that someone on the RSOF had the best fake story every. he was saying "thieves broke into my friends house while I was spending the night and we fought them off and they had a gun and my friend was shot in the arm. the police said that they were trying to steal my friends rs account and they went to jail, and then more people came and tried to steal the computer and they set the house on fire and killed him and all his family, all for his account". that kid was my hero : i mean it was seriously the best made-up story evar.
