What is a word? and Any point to this?

Featured Replies

What is a word? Isn't it just a representation of something? I've been thinking lately and it's making my head hurt.

Also is there any point to this "formula" to find 7,8,9... more than a number, start with 3, for example to find 7 more than 3 times by 2 and add 4, to find 8 more than 4 times by 2 and add 4, to find 9 more than 5 times by 2 and add 4... is this common knowledge or just a pointless discovery? :-s

I'm a thinker but am often short of words sorry if my posts are shorter than expected...

OMG I cant wait for the cleaning skill!

According to dictionary.com, a word is

a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning

So it's just a tool of communication you mark with symbols when you can't speak (such as in an online discussion), or speak when you can't use written symbols (such as in a direct debate).

About the second part... I really am confused about what you exactly mean

The math part splattered my brains all over the wall. However, yeah I suppose that words just represent an emotion, place, person etc.

ok, so here is what I'm trying to say,

start with 3.

To find 7 more than 3,

Multiply 3 by 2=6

6+4=10=3+7

To find 8 more than 4

Multiply 4 by 2=8

8+4=12=4+8

To find 9 more than 5

multiply 5 by 2=10

10+4=14=5+9

simple really :uhh: ::'

Uh...What?

According to that, to find 7 more than 10...

Multiply 10 by 2 = 20.

20+4 = 24.

24 isn't 7 more than 10?

And in my words (Haha...) a word is something used to communicate. Usually written/spoken, but I think there are other ways.

Notice he specifically started with 7 and 3, and that he progressed to 8 and 4, 9 and 5, etc. It's a pattern.

Bolded the part I thought was funny.

You're finding a number that is the number + 4 over the number. So obviously, you'd need to add the number, then a 4. That's not discovery, that's just... simple.

It's basically:

X+(X+4) = X * 2 + 4

X * 2 is the same as X + X, that is what multiplying something by two is.

I could do the same thing with any number. 95 is 90 more then 5. I want to add a number 95 more then 5.

Multiply 5 by two to get 10. Add 90. Get 100

OR

Add 95 to 5. Get 100.

What I just did was instead of adding the number (95), I subtracted from it the second number (5), added the result (90) and then added the number I'd previously gotten (5).

95 does equal 90 + 5.

lol, i often question the importance of words. after all they are just sounds. simply noises we make in which we communicate with each other.

If you repeat the same word over and over for a few minutes non stop, you start to realize just how odd the word would sound if it meant nothing.

A word is a visual or verbal communicative symbol.
Your name is "bet you fail", and you're starting a business with your mom? I'm not even going to touch that.....

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

To me, it seems like the number you start with (3, 4, 5) is x, and the number you end up with (10, 12, 14)

All the examples you gave were examples of the equation y=2x+4.

Okay, I see what I did, I added one to both sides of the equation just to even it out.

Reb, it took me two minutes to figure it out, from the bus to my house after school today so about 3 minutes. But yes even though it was kinda "off-topic" I do need to find other things to do with my time... and no, it probably isn't what you think it is  I just play way to many video games or sit on tif to much (If thats even a bad thing :XD: )

On an interesting side note, the reason we humans count in base ten is because we

have 10 fingers. If people only had 2 fingers on each hand, for example, or number system

would go like this.
