RuneScape Is A Real MMO!

Today I found a press release from FunCom about Age of Conan being the second biggest MMO due to having seven hundred thousand subscribers.

 

 

 

This really annoyed me as RuneScape is blatantly bigger than them with around a million subscribers and however many free members. I am sick and tired of people not thinking RS is a 'proper mmo' or that it should be taken as a kids game or whatever. I'm really angry at the game getting discounted and ignored cause it doesn't cost $60 to buy and then $20 a month. Its just as good as any of those other ones and in many ways better.

^ It's not really all about the graphics. I mean, sure, the graphics unfortunately apply, but remember the RuneScape community has a big gaping divide, one half divided into idiots and the other respectable intelligent people. It'a been said and done, because of the rude community, our MMO isn't like a regular "Mature" MMO. Honestly, though, I see our community is just as "Mature" as others...All communities have idiots, WoW, AoC, or RS.

 

 

 

I DO remember reading a thing in GameInformer about the "Top Ten Games You've Never Heard Of," and RuneScape was one of them. From memory, they dissed the graphics and community--As a matter of fact, I don't think they said it was a proper MMO because of those reasons, which is [developmentally delayed]ed.

I have to disagree with the statement that Rs has just as much of a mature crowd as any other MMO, in all the other online games I've played I've never been flamed so much for doing nothing, as I have on Rs. As far as I'm concerned Rs is geared to a much younger audience then say WoW or Diablo2, mind you I'm older than the majority of people I come across on Rs, and more often than not i get put down for being older, and still playing Rs.

 

 

 

I think it's really just the competitiveness of Rs, it's a stat-based game, where if your stats are lessar than someone else's you get called a noob, or if you have inferior items compared to someone else's, you are also automatically a noob. This game was alot more fun when I had no idea what was going on in it tbh, now I'm far too concerned with my stats, and where I'll be going with them, almost like a chore, rather than fun. But I love it just the same I suppose :lol:

Even if the free version of RS does suck, it's still free, and the free things in life are always the best. You shouldn't take the for granted. After all, you won't be a member forever, and when you run out of membership and start crying, you'll at least be thankful for there being a free version [hopefully].

RS had 1m members (paying) and 9m members (free) around this time last year according to "publicly available data".

 

 

 

It is worth noting though that these are bound to be accounts seeing as how RS is not played by anybody in Asia (hardly anybody, WoW/WC3/SC are dominant there). So even though they *technically* have the highest players I am sure most of us have created at least 5 accounts and never played on them ever again.

 

 

 

Furthermore, they could be including accounts they have banned which would shoot their numbers up greatly. And even if they weren't counting accounts banned these statistics were from last year when about half the people at a time were macroing.

Well, I've sat down with loads of high-rated MMOs. WoW, Guild Wars, Everquest, Diablo... hell, even Dungeon Runners, KoL, and MapleStory *snort*. I guess I enjoy RuneScape so much because of how long I've been playing. I started way back in Classic for a very short time, and I've mostly enjoyed it ever since. I don't have much patience left with other MMOs, especially since it's much easier to put down my poor level twenty night elf rogue from WoW and return to my well-stocked level 100 character in RuneScape.

 

 

 

Also, it's a social issue for me. I've got plenty of friends in RuneScape, both locally known and Internet-known. In any other MMO, it's either me going solo until I meet people (which takes me a long time) or just sticking with what I know and like.

 

 

 

Now, I'm not saying that these "famous" MMOs are worse than RuneScape. I'll bet that if all my friends quit RuneScape, then I would as well, most likely. I prefer the combat mechanics of WoW to RuneScape, and I'd play it more if I had friends on it. I'm really bad at playing games by myself.

I went to the link, looked at the games with a quick run through, saw the titles, glanced at some of the words, quit out, posted. I didn't read ANYONES opinion about something RS related, I was reading that link. Sure, I read mememe's post, but RS should be included in their because it has more F2Pers than Members. Simple: If you saw free food samples at one cart, and at another selling food, what would you go for? Personally, I'd go for the free food, because they'd let me have a few free samples instead of paying for one or few things.

 

 

 

Or, in this case, RuneScape. F2P is small. F2P doesn't have a lot. But you know something? At least it IS free. And thats something that anyone can be thankful for, especially people who can't pay. And there are even people who stay F2Pbecause--well, they don't need to pay to enjoy themselves. You know what? They either have a) A great imagination, and can depict there own story while playing the game, or B) ARE THANKFUL for a free game.

I can honestly say I think WoW has a better combat system. I love Knights Online's battle system. I played a couple of futuristic MMO's, fun. But you know what? My friends, from both Real Life and in game, are there. Some people I can converse and talk to if I have a problem or just want to discuss something. It's like an IM, but I can fight things and do quests at the same time. RS delivers that fluently and I like it. I don't pover estimate how good it is, I underestimate it and neglect the cool things in RuneScape. People don't include it because a very few common sensual reasons:

 

 

 

-Rude children, brats, or arrogant people who scream "N00b!!"

 

-PS1 looking Graphics

 

-Browser based, apparently "Click and no challenge RPG" (I hear this all the time)

 

 

 

The third reason I know is BS. I hate how there are some arrogant XBox kids who think that their friggin' Halo game is "t3h 0wnz0rz lollolol" and is the most challenging game they've ever played. In Halo, you barely have to use your brain. In RS, there are puzzles that need to be solved, both hard and easy, but at least you're using your brain.

 

 

 

So anyway, most reviewers don't use opinion, they use what they see from Experience. They don't just go, "RuneScape sucks because I don't like it" they take first hand impressions of the community (and unfortunately graphics play a huge role) and use these things as their review. And lemme tell ya, all MMO's have their Brats, but we have the most.

And so what I have garnered from two of the posts above me is that the only thing keeping you guys playing RS is the fact that you have friends who play it or that you have been playing it longer and don't want to spend time leveling a character on another MMO.

 

 

 

Neither of you said that you keep playing RS for "The awesome quests!" or "That killed PVP", in fact both of you admitted that WoW has better PVP.

 

 

 

I'm not sure why we are arguing when all of us agree that RS in terms of game play is not necessarily a note worthy MMO.

I'd agree that kids who think Halo is godly hard to play are wrong. But I don't think people are wrong when they criticize it for being "click and no challenge". If you have the appropriate levels in RS you can do it. Skill level doesn't matter. That is different in other games where even if you are a high level you can still be terrible.

I'm sorry, but did you try to compare a fps to a TT puzzle box?

 

 

 

RS doesn't need a brain, hell, it plays better if you put your brain in the fridge before playing. Just because ME2 requires a bit of thinking (if you don't use a quest guide that is), that doesn't put it on par with the amount of skill needed to succeed at pvp in say WoW or Halo.

 

 

 

The only determining factors in RS are a) amount of time spent grinding like a zombie, and B) luck. Skill is nonfactor. Sure, someone that is good at organizing time and is able to think outside the box for leveling will do better than the average mik, but no matter how you spin it, it all boils down to hundreds of hours cutting willows and beating up fire giants.

 

 

 

RS really is a basic game that isn't on par with most of the other mmos out there.

The only one with an interesting thing is WURM Online. The graphics are decent, and the reviewer makes the community sound okay.

 

RUNESCAPE IS NOT AN UNREAL MMO.

 

There is no such thing as an unreal mmo anyway.

 

If the community (bad or good) is massive, the game is multiplayer and based online, and you have an avatar, then the game is an MMORPG.

 

 

 

Habbo Hotel? Habbo Hotel isn't a real MMORPG. And if it is, it should be fifth.

The only reason I still play Runescape is that my best friend plays. That and I can play it while surfing the web, reading, or playing my DS. Quite honestly, I enjoy WoW a lot more and think that it, and the company behind it, are better. Maybe the site also included other elements into their review, like customer support and company honesty...

klutz maybe you haven't noticed, but unlike a lot of free versions of more advertised MMOs runescape's free version gives access to a lot, and has no level caps. In theory you can get lvl 99 in every skill (even mems if you get enough lamps).

 

 

 

I personally don't like the whole Horde vs Alliance limits on WoW. I don't think its fair that i can't talk to a horde friend or alliance when your on other side. Takes away from having friends.

 

 

 

Runescape is a fun game even when its free, and should be included in those list. It was a lot better with old way of pking but there will be a day where Jagex can fix up bounty hunter or new mini game that can give us the old thrill that pking did.

DotA is AoS. But DotA rapes [wagon] and I would seriously recommend it to everybody. Very fun, very balanced, (not exactly a) great community, and it is like 20 bucks to buy.

I think the reason why they might think it is for little kids is because you don't have to pay for anything to play, or download anything (apart from java runtime), and the old rs homepage and layout looked really "kiddy". But ever since the rs graphic update, the first thing i said to my friend who quit rs about 2 years ago, but still likes me to update him on whats going on, was "It no-longer looks like it's a game for under 10's"

Also, comparing the brains needed to play these games is a bad idea. These games require use of brains in different ways.

 

 

 

Runescape takes brains in mode of quests, puzzles, minigames and calculations on skill training / money making. (Unless you use quest and mini-game guides and skill calculators, that is.)

 

 

 

Halo and other FPS games require strategies, improvisation and good reactions in order to defeat the AI's / players.

But there are plenty of mature people on there. I even met someone on there and me and him became very good friends and still are today, and he wasnt one of these people that go round acting like 8 year olds trying to report everyone if they mis-spelt something and it came up in stars. -.-
