Tattoos

Well I just got my first tattoo yesterday afternoon and I really love it. I am not regretting my decision to get one at all and it's in a spot that is easily covered by a shirt.

But what I really don't understand is why there is so much animosity towards tattoos. I told some friends in the Tif clan chat and they said stuff like "tattoos are epic phail" and other slams against tattoos. What are your opinions on tattoos and why? Please try to be civil and keep the personal insults to a minimum.

I've got no problem with the idea of tattoos, but sometimes the tattoos people get do bother me if they're cliche or just stupid in any way. Lots of people around here (including some friends of mine) get tattoos of some kind of Scottish flag or the Lion Rampant, and I think they look unbelievably tacky. When I tell them, they just say they don't care what anyone else thinks, which I suppose is the right attitude to have.

That said, I have been considering getting "Over my dead body" tattooed somewhere, just because it'll be hilarious for anyone who has to see me dead and naked.

I don't see much wrong with tattoos. Some can look like amazing pieces of art, and others not to much. I guess the general connotations of tattoos that have built up throughout the years are what cause negative thoughts about them.

Tattoo's are link to 'rough' people (criminals, gangs etc) and prison inmates. So people with many tattoos that are visible in general tend to receive negative thoughts about them, merely due to the tattoos.

I won't lie, if I'm walking down a street and a guy covered in tattoos is walking towards me, I'd be a little weary of him due to the tattoos.

Another bad thing about tattoos is that they fade. So in 10 years time a great looking tattoo would look quite blurry unless touched up. I simply wouldn't want to scar my body with tattoos simply because I think a body looks far better and natural without them.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I don't have any negative opinions about tattoo's, they are a form of art and people are allowed to do what they want. I like the ones that have real meaning, or are original, not some of the cliche ones.

as long as it means something to you

I personally don't think a tattoo needs to mean anything to you. One tattoo I'm planning on getting will just be because I like the design. If you find online tattoo communities you'll find a lot of people who don't agree with the idea that tattoos need to mean something to you. I think shows like Miami Ink and LA Ink have really overdone the "story behind the tattoo" crap.

I really agree with the cliche tattoos being stupid. Example is the lower back tattoo or the barbwire around the bicep. I really don't like those. If it means something to you and you're expressing your individuality then tattoos are a great idea.

Exactly, the only purpose I see in those is, "Look, I'm hardcore." Maybe my nonconformist side is just showing. Ehh, I've always found tattoos to be an opportunity for personal expression.

No kidding. Call me back when you've got some real barbed wire. I'll pull it nice and tight for you....

I don't see anything wrong with a tattoo itself, but if I ever get one it'll be something small on my back or near my shoulder. Not visible.

I don't understand tattoos covering your entire body, that's just wierd, but whatever floats your boat. Does it hurt? I was thinking about getting one of the Imperial symbol on my bicep, to make it look like I was branded for Palpatine's army.

And like Lat, I want to get some to basically give the middle finger to whoever finds me dead. And I will be naked when I die, I can say that much.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

i've got a tattoo on my back. i do want more but they are so expensive, my plan for my back would probably cost at least 1.3k usd total, lol. that is including the $200 i've already got in 1 tattoo. i have no problem with them, and like i said, mine is on my back and not visible, although i do want some on my arms too, but i have no specific plan for that. i understand most of the negative views on tattoos with gang/prison relations and stuff, but still, if a tattoo means something to you, or if you just like it, more power to you. my tattoo means nothing, i just liked how the image looked for ~5 years and wanted it as a tattoo.

Getting a tattoo on your bicep will barely hurt at all as long as it's on the outside (more visible area). If you get it on the inside area it will be pretty painful, but other areas will hurt MUCH more.

It's impossible to describe the feeling of getting a tattoo, but the lesser amount of muscle you have between your skin and bone the more the tattoo will hurt. Example: Pectoral tattoo, forearm tattoo, or bicep tattoo is relatively painless and ribs, spine, or top of foot is A LOT more painful. I had mine on my side and part of it went to my ribs and it was pretty painful but pretty tolerable too. Just don't psych yourself out and go for it, you won't regret it :)

Agreed. If you over think it, you'll probably talk yourself out of it. Plus, if it's really painful, your body will release endorophins (sp?) to help counter the pain. Thus you have a natural high and you might just want more tattoos ;)

Haha. I'd love to get a tattoo, and I can wait.

I'll either get "Freedom" In cool letters written across my chest or "San Diego" on my back.

Or both, if I get the money. 8-)

Range, just one quest. Did it hurt? I mean, of course it does, but how bad? :?

let me put it this way about the pain of my tattoo. it was the worst pain i ever felt in my entire life. i'll post a picture of it just for reference for what i'm talking about. it started out totally tolerable, they did the outlines of all the circles first, then filled in the big circles, then the medium circles, then the small circles. each time they went back over an area, the numbness had worn off, and it hurt x times more as they kept going over it. at the end of it, it was the lower right hand corner, and i was holding onto the stool in front of me white knuckled cause the pain was that bad. it was borderline unbearable, the only thing that made me not stop them was that it was almost over. muscley parts of your body will hurt less, but will still hurt. pick a good location for your first tattoo, and possibly take some minor pain medication before you go.

as for fading, the outlines of the circles are still good, but inside the circles, especially the bigger ones, it has faded a bit, nothing too bad, still looks cool. i've only had this for about a year.

Good advice right there. Also, there are numbing gels available to buy (I have no clue where to buy them) that might be a good idea if you can't handle much pain. Remember never to get drunk before you go in for a tattoo though. Alcohol thins the blood and the process goes quicker with less bleeding ;) They don't have to spend as much time wiping the area clean
