Profanity Filter

There is many bad/good points on the filter.

If we remove it; it'll encourage people to try and get round the filters. I do agree that unnecessessary words are sometimes blocked out. If you type random letters all across; it always gets blocked.

i dont think they could remove it, they need it to be seen as a family friendly game

however, i think it is up for a serious overhaul. they code they wrote to auto censor is badly flawed at best

Really? I just want to be able to say:

"That sucks man"

"This random sucks"

"It sucks that I can't say the word SUCKS"

Whats so bad about it? Sure I can see how it could go bad... but as if "blows" was any better. :P It's become my alternative to "sucks," because "This isn't very fun man," just doesn't have the same effect. If they would just block basic words, and leave it at that, I'm sure we'd be fine. Really... I think the censor has been taken way to far. Otherwise? I'm fine with it. I don't feel the need to curse, and if I do? The censor will block it out for me, and if anyone needs to know what it really says? I'm sure they can figure it out on their own.

Alright.

I see it two ways.

Yes.

This would allow for us to use words if needed. Like if you were very mad, you could use the words as needed. I also feel that this can be used to express yourself correctly.

Some words that are blocked (My school, phone), and shouldn't be. They are easily bypassable (even though that too is against the rules) and should be removed from the censor.

No.

Sadly, since this game has been advertised on gaming sites, the maturity level has gone down on the game. Kids would walk around, as stated earlier, using these new words every time they can, or just to spam it.

It also can lead to harrassment. (Hey let's...) This is unacceptable in a gaming comunity.

I also feel that Jagex put the censor there to save them. They don't want to deal with parents or critics saying that the gamers can use foul language easily, and is easily accessed by children.

My opinion is No. The censor should stay.

I had a piece of grass on my shoe, and she wiped that off. Yeah. Impressive, eh? That's probably the closest I've ever been to having sex. :P

I don't know. Since the only profanities I tend to use on the Internet or in real-life are "damn" or "gorram" (shoutout to all the browncoats, yeaaaah) then I don't really mind the censor at all (especially since "gorram" isn't censored). If they lifted it, it would be pretty annoying seeing people say such enlightening phrases as "ill [bleep] your [bleep] you [bleep]." But some things should not be censored. "Phone?" "Butt?" Seriously? That's just weird.

I think that it's good at most times ( ike when some people make files just for fun to make people mad). But i also don't like how they take out the dumbest thing like booga wooga.lolz.

And i also don't like how if you dont' think something would be banned and you say it and everyone reports you and you get mute...

To be honest i don't mind having a filter, big whoop we can't swear, i wish everyone was mature enough to realise they don't need to swear to make a point...

Also in regards to taking some words from the filter, just because you don't find it offensive, someone else might... it's filtered because it can be deemed offensive, if it was removed, people would still find it offensive, and as it is no longer starred out you could be reported for it, that equals possible mutes and bans.

I don't know any people who find 'damn' or 'sucks' offensive.

The profanity filter is useful, but it does star out many words for no reason. For example, you can't type mantas; instead it's always manta*. You can't even type certain normal usernames and you can't write "je" (french for I) without it being starred either... *what's wrong with je?*

I've started questioning the whole filter, as it highly restrains communication in-game. Still, knowing there are many underage users on Runescape, I feel it should not be removed. I do suggest however that it be improved.

Besides, if you want a serious discussion Runescape is certainly not the right place for it. If you want to talk about topics such as homosexuality and political opinions, it is best done in forums dedicated to the subject.

Most people on Runescape are there to have a break from their normal everyday lives; they want to enter an online adventure (hence the "online adventure game" quote under Runescape). It's hard to escape when people start swearing, being offensive or rude.

So in one way, the profanity filter is there to save the essence of the game.

considering that the profanity filter blocks a BUNCH of random words, i think this is a good idea. i mean seriously, if you're 18 and under, you probably hear all the words that are blocked at school anyway (i know i do) so i think runescape should get rid of it.

I agree with you, but they are making french worlds, where 'je' certainly won't be blocked.

Just because you hear it in real life doesn't mean that you would want to hear it in a game.

If people use proper English, spell the majority of words correctly and don't shorten words then the filter doesn't affect anything you say. You can have a conversation without the filter interfering. The filter only becomes an annoying if you use words that Jagex feels are inappropriate. Change your use of language, and the filter problem, is gone.

well if profanities were allowed, young players might get influenced at a younger age to use them. but most of the time, the filter "pwns" even the slightest typo error, causing much inconvenience to players. also, if u try to speak in other languages, nearly every word would be censored. therefore, maybe there should be a profanity filter, for players to turn on and off

You should not be able to turn the filter off.

The only problem I have with the filter is when you are spotted by vyrewatch in mieyerditch they suck your blood so when I try to tell people on clan chat and private chat that a vyrewatch sucked my blood it is filtered.

My username is jamesrules90 NOT jimmyjames227.

The filter doesn't bother me that much. The only reasons I see you would want to remove the filter is either because you want people to see your swears, or you are sick of the filter blocking where it shouldn't.

As long as you stay mature in the game, the first option shouldn't be a problem.

But the second one, is, especially if you speak another language. When I speak Dutch (or rather Flemish) to some of my lesser-mature friends that don't English enough yet, a lot of innocent words get censored out for no reason (e.g. "Kunt ge" = "Can you" - you can obviously see what word I mean).

Possible solution: A possibility to report bad censored out words (if there isn't one already) and maybe an option to let the censor change according to what language you speak (a menu where you can check all the languages you speak, so the words in those languages won't be censored). Another problem would be to verify that you actually do speak the languages you selected...

I agree that some of the lesser-censored words such as 'suck' and whatever shouldn't be filtered. The easiest way to deal with this is for there to be an option where the user can define a list of words that they do not want to be filtered.

So those that do wish to see strong swear words can, and those who do not want to do not have to.

If the community was much more mature, I think a swear filter would work. But as it stands now, the community is made up mostly of 12 year-olds who think that it's cool to use swear words and "1337 speak". Putting an optional filter on RS would only stand to further weaken RuneScape's already atrocious community.

That pretty much means I can't speak in my native language anymore.
