What makes a good friend?

pfft...I have only 1 real good friend on runescape that dosn't go to my school, me and him go back for 3 years...met the guy while I was training crafting, I needed silver and he needed mining xp. (we were both f2p back then) we put 2 and 2 together and decided he would mine the ores and I would make things with them. even since then we have pretty much done a lot together, cool long quests, mole killing, pking, cutting yews, we even decided to both get members at the same time. This story ends on a sad note however...I received an e-mail from him that said basicly along the lines of this

 

 

 

"This is not (I'm not gonna post his name) this is his mother. Sadly three days ago (my friend) was in a terrible accident whilehe was on a bike ride. A car hit him while the driver was intoxicated. He died the following day."

 

 

 

the message was longer but I hope you get the point. When I got this message I cried. My friend passed away on july 19th 2006. Now don't tell me that I can't be friends with somebody online.

This is the internet we are talking about. You don't know a person until you see them in real life.

 

 

 

Friends in Runescape are a lie, and anyone gullible enough to fall for the idea of friendship without truly knowing someone is absolutely foolish to how life should work.

 

 

 

The problem with this is u don't really know anyone you do see in real life. there hidden behind there logos, there social class, just there desire to be cool and respected

 

 

 

on the internet these thing are irrelevant you don't base your opinions on there cloths or popularity

 

 

 

you base it on their actions, their habits, their soul if you will

 

and you don't need to meet someone to be a friend

 

every time a friend of mine quits a part of me goes with them

 

but the memories always remain

 

 

 

 

Seriously, if you think you get to know people better over the internet than in real life, you're one of those kids destined to become an internet predator statistic.

 

 

 

Sure, people hide behind masks in public. But if class is a mask, the internet is a full [bleep] body suit.

 

 

 

and yet there are several dozen internet social sites. obviously a few million ppl agree with my opinion

As for the social sites, you're either talking about hi5 or myspace or whatever, or maybe those dating sites like eHarmony - and believe it or not, online dating is for losers that can't get dates in the real world and those networking sites usually involve people you met personally first. Global chatrooms don't do anything but allow people that have trouble socially to carry on some resemblance of a social life, unless you really believe that guy that's on irc 14 hours a day is actually a black belt in taekwondo that served as class president in high school, dates Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, and drives an Escalade to his 500k a year job.

What makes a good friend?

 

Somebody that says more than 'nice' whenever you talk to them and who helps you out and gives you advice on the game, as well as being fun to talk to.

I'm a terrible friend, but I always try to be polite ;)

I'd lend them anything that they need and that I have and don't intend to use, but generally only if they came to my world and place ;) I'd also entertain them with my drunken in-game antics ^_^

Someone who I can trust (I used to lend my full dragon, fury and veracs armor way before trade limit to a friend, he always returned) someone who is friendly and is willing to help me, someone who I can have fun with

Well, I think I'm a good friend, I always help my friends out when they need it, and I always hang out with them when I'm skilling :P

Oh man i don't know what i would do without friends on rs.

 

I would probably have died of boredom when doing certain skills.

 

Friends are what makes runescape, sure skills can be fun and there are mini-games or whatever, but really i go on runescape to chat.

Someone who will talk to you without being asked, someone who wants to hang out with you, someone who does things for you without expecting anything in return, and who will never turn on you and stab you in the back.

uhh... i hang out with them i guess? i don't pay attention to how i am a good friend i pay more attention to my friends....

 

I can be kind of random/annoying sometimes actually...

 

well, i guess it's because i try. I always try to reach out to my friends, always greet them with a "hi" first, and always try to help them.

 

I even try to stay connected with a few friends that have quit rs, through msn.

 

 

 

What would you do for a friend that you met on RS?

 

That entirely depends on how long i've known them and how nice they are to me. I'd be willing to give most of my friends in rs pixel money, or lend them my items for free, but for like one or two of my friends i'd be willing to give up my account and start over. but much more importantly i would be there for them when they are feeling bad (such as breakups with bf/gf).

 

 

 

What do you think a friend would do for you?

 

Give words of advise when i need them, keep me entertained, and make me feel better when i am feeling bad.

 

 

 

Even as much as i trust my friends i realize that i don't really know them, I only know how they present themselves over the internet, and as such i do not give out my name or personal info to anyone (except the people i know from real life).

 

 

 

As a side note, it's important to have real life friends too, and not neglect them due to runescape.

Sorry to hear about that. But i have had only a few close RS friends and i do think that you can make friends online also.

what makes a good friend? well, first of all, TRUST, that is by far the most important aspect but the problem with this aspect is that it opens the door to being hurt. I also think the concept of friendship has changed over the course of rs, and not in a good way.

 

 

 

I personally don't think the overall atmosphere of rs is conducive to making friends. I think it WAS, back probably as far back as rs1 but with updates such as the equal trade and the GE i think True friendship is much more rare to come by as it is harder to gain trust.

I remember back when one of my friends first bought a rune long... it was 32,000 gp and boy it took 5 of us FOREVER to make that much it was 2am and we went and killed hobgobs passing it back and forth and eventually making enough to buy all five of us one.

 

 

 

I remember pking with my group of friends irl and in-game, now that is where true friendship shines though, fighting to the last lobster to try to take down mithril tank mages in var wilds lvl 5 (before there was even the concept of a multi wildy)

 

 

 

through the years i've played rs pretty hardcore, i know my stats don't reflect that, partly because i've made to many pures. I hate the fact that rs hasn't done certain things that would improve the game to incorporate friendships more into the game (party/groups anyone? and don't say lootshare you know that's a crappy system)

 

 

 

Oh snap i really didn't mean to rant about the updates that have so drastically changed the game, i'll end with this:

 

 

 

have i made lasting friends? Yes, ONE, i've known her sense rs1 and she got banned (she got hacked and the hacker did some nasty things) and i gave her 5m or so in items and gp to get back on her feet, could i do that in the rs that is now? no, and i detest that fact, in a very real sense, jagex has changed and molded this game into it is a reportable offense transfer gold to a different account (sara sets in bh Pl0x?) or now give gold to a friend. Someone above me mentioned a friend mined silver and he crafted it and enjoyed it and created a lasting bond through it, i daresay you won't find many people that will do that now-a-days either because they don't have enough questpoints (WTF?) or because of the culture of runescape.

 

Sorry for the long post and the bleak outlook but 25% of my friends have quit because of the dueling update and another 60% quit after pk was deleted (although it lit up a bit after they said full world pking was coming out)
