bossi
(CNN) -- Several people are feared dead after a man opened fire at a college in southwestern Finland Tuesday before killing himself, state media reported. The shots were reported at a college for home- and institutional-economics in the municipality of Kauhajoki, according to YLE, a Finnish national broadcaster. The broadcaster, citing hospital sources, said the shooter -- a 22-year-old student at the school -- later killed himself. Speculation surrounded a video on Web site YouTube, which appeared to show a man from the town of Kauhajoki firing a pistol at a shooting range. It was eventually withdrawn from the site. The shooting wounded several dozen people, said journalist Jarkko Sipila, citing hospital sources. Watch more about the shooting » The man, armed with a handgun, was spotted moving about the school shortly before the shooting started at 11 a.m., the broadcaster reported, according to the Finnish News Agency (STT). Police told the news agency that it "was possible that a number of people had died," the agency added. Smoke was billowing from the school Tuesday afternoon, the news agency said. Finnish journalist Mika Petterson told CNN: "The latest information is that the school in on fire and the shooter has killed himself." Jukka Forsberg, a maintenance worker at the school, told YLE that several people had suffered injuries. The worker said a man with a ski mask went into the building with a large bag. Soon after, the worker heard shots fired. Kauhajoki, with a population of about 15,000, is about 180 miles (290km) from the capital, Helsinki. The incident comes almost a year after another school shooting left nine people, including the gunman, dead in the Finnish town of Tuusala. Before that shooting, the gunman, 18-year-old student Pekka-Eric Auvinen, posted a video on YouTube titled "Jokela High School Massacre 11/7/2007" -- identifying the date and location of the attack. Finland enjoys a strong tradition of hunting and has a high proportion of gun ownership, with 2 million firearms owned in a nation of 5 million What are you smoking...? warren211
Only in America. Oh wait... Sorry for sounding like an [wagon], but I needed to say that. I'm tired of hearing it every time a major incident occurs in the US. Anyway, it's still quite surprising that such few shootings occur with such a high gun ownership (or at least, such a few massive internationally published ones). I still sympathize for Finland, they won my respect after I learned about the Winter War. jou_maan
I've been following the situation with friend since around 11am when the information first came out. The shooter seems to be still alive and is taken care of by medical staff. Around 9 - 10 victims have died, and about same amount have been injured. And I thought this wouldn't be as serious as Jokela school shooting. Sounds to me that this guy is a copycat killer. I guess it was about time someone actually did it. There have been threatings about another Jokela school shooting happening ever since it first happened. So far they have been just a sick jokes. I'm curious what will happen from now on and same time kind of sad how desperate and/or stupid cane people get. #-o
warren211
The shooter's alive? Good. It's about time the cowardly shooters survived their attacks. I'm tired of hearing they killed themselves to avoid punishment and going insane in prison. We should make an example out of him. I hope he makes a full recovery and then loses his mind while in prison for life. These shooters are cowards. Nope12345
Tragic :( Finland has a high gun ownership but a very clean record in gun crimes, the one guy comes in and destroys their reputaion :( Unfairly Banned-Appeal In Process, Its been slow due to the sheer number of them

dsavi
I came here to post this, heard it a few minutes ago. Surprisingly slow, how news travels. 10 people dead, I heard. :( This is indeed sad. Only in America. Oh wait... Finland has a higher rate of school shootings than the US, actually. :( I'm going to be hearing about this all day tomorrow at school. There have been threatings about another Jokela school shooting happening ever since it first happened. So far they have been just a sick jokes. Yep, a school near us was threatened the week after Jokela, massive rumors were spread and the police even got involved. Unfortunately for the shooter, there is no death penalty in Finland. Edit: I wasn't aware of so many other Finnish TIFers before.
rs_shark_fan_died
Even if the shooter doe survive (though several news agencie have reported hes dead now) he will be severly handicapped. Gun used was most likely a .22 wich is the same gun he had in his several youtube vids (now removed)
dsavi
According to YLE.fi he shot himself in the head, and is now in the Tampere University hospital. Edit: The article is old. He died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Will H
If what rs_shark_fan_died says is true, this could have been averted if the gun laws weren't so lax, and that's unacceptable. It's always sad when innocent people lose their lives in this way. ~ W ~
dsavi
The thing is, America's gun laws are far, far less strict than those of Finland. I probably wouldn't be eligible for one here, whereas in the US the faulty constitution guarantees everyone a gun.

dsavi
To obtain a firearms license, an individual must declare a valid reason to own a gun. Acceptable reasons include hunting, sports or hobby shooting, profession related, show or promotion or exhibition, collection or museum, souvenir, and signalling. It is worth noticing that self- or home defence are not considered valid reasons. The applicant must provide evidence supporting the acquisition license application to prove that he or she is actually using firearms for the stated purpose(s). Such proof may consist of written declarations from other license holders as referees, shooting diaries or certificates from a shooting club.[2] The applicant is also subjected to an extensive background check from police accessible databases and even citations for speeding or DUI can be grounds of not granting the license. The part of the gun law we're interested in, there's some other unrelated stuff too.

Laikrob
Sadly, the videos are still up for everyone to view. They were removed from YouTube, but not before some people had the time to download and reupload them on another site. In my opinion he doesn't deserve that kind of attention, and worst case scenario some other mentally unstabile kid gets "inspired". To me, the most unbelievable thing about this is that the police questioned him and let him go - with his firearm. I can't see any reasonable argument for someone to be allowed that if there is reason to suspect that they might be a danger to someone. Judging from the videos, the police had to be pretty naive if they believed he was just training range shooting. In the following weeks, I bet we will hear stories from his family members, classmates and other people close or halfway close to him, all saying they had a feeling that he might end up doing something bad. We see that with pretty much all the school shootings, and it always makes me wonder why noone reacted sooner. You can't undo something like this, but I strongly believe you can prevent a lot of the possible explosive cases by reacting sooner. Hope none of you were personally affected by this shooting, I know some of you live close to Kauhajoki and have family and friends in the same age group as the victims. You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now? das1330
Notice that a lot of these popped up after the Virginia Tech incident? Much like the postal shootings of the mid 1990's Cho started a bit of a fad in going to do school shootings. Eventually it will die out (it already is starting to) but for now it is something that is unavoidable.
