The official DT thread! :)

In my opinion Dream Theater is an even better prog band than Rush!

[hide=Background Info]Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty" by John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess.

Dream Theater has become a successful progressive rock band, despite the drop in popularity of the genre since the mid-1970s. Although the band has had a few successful hits (notably "Pull Me Under" in the early 1990s, which received extensive MTV rotation), they have mostly stayed underground for their career, feeding off support from their fans.

The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians. Guitarist John Petrucci has been named as the third player on the G3 tour six times, more than any other invited guitarist, following in the footsteps of Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

The band's highest selling album is the gold selling Images and Words (1992), which reached #61 on the Billboard 200 charts. Both the 1994 release Awake and their 2002 release Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence also entered the charts at #32 and #46 respectively and received mostly positive reviews. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence also led to Dream Theater becoming the initial band reviewed in the Music Section of Entertainment Weekly during its opening week of release, despite the magazine generally preferring more mainstream music. In 2007, Systematic Chaos entered US Billboard 200 at #19. Dream Theater has sold over two million albums in the U.S., and over 8 million albums and DVDs worldwide.[/hide]

The only thing I disagree is that they're a better prog band than Rush. Rush are my favourite band, but DT just OWN. My favourite is the Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory album - 77 minutes of pure, unadulterated beautiful music wound into one story that flows amazingly well from song to song. Fantastic band. Fantastic in every possible way.

I dropped out after Metropolis pt. 2 Unbelievable they stopped releasing on cassette. James Labrie is one of the best vocalists in the world though.

I like some of their songs but I really do not like LaBrie's voice. If they kicked him and hired a vocalist that didn't sound like George Michael they would probably be amazing. There's such a vast amount of talent in that band.

These guys are my second favorite band after Opeth. Images and Words is my favorite album of theirs (even though "Learning to Live" is terrible), but I like all of their albums, even the less received ones like Octavarium or When Dream and Day Unite.

They are incredibly boring live, though. I saw them on prog nation, and they just [bleep]ed their way through a 2 hour set.

Heh, probably one of my favourite songs from them. A lot of it because LaBrie's voice actually works well in it.

I just think that it's way too long, and I can't stand some of the keyboard tones.

Talented band, no doubt. Not as much of a fan of their stuff though anymore except for Metropolis Pt2. , Octavrium (song) and A change of seasons (song).

I was anticipating a post from you on this thread..and that is all you say?

What is there to say about Dream Theater? It's a band of robots. They know how to play their instruments, but their music hasn't got a soul. And their singer really needs to be oiled. Seriously. What did you contribute to this thread other than opening it? You said that you think Dream Theater is better than Rush, and that Never Enough is your favorite song. Next to that you mention some random facts. I still have no clue why Dream Theater's music is better than any other band within the genre, or what you think is so good about them.

Oh, you also said that Adio is an [wagon]. More or less, anyway. Good job man.

Before you are going to complain that those who don't like Dream Theater should ignore this thread, I would like to direct you to the Dream Theater Fan Forum where everybody will say things that make you feel warm inside.

Pretty much. I appreciate their talent but beyond that not much.

Don't lie, Nadril. A couple months ago you were the biggest DT fanboy on these forums.
