A Halloween Review (Warning: Minor wall of text)

Featured Replies

Today, I logged into Runescape after the new update to find Draynor shrouded in darkness and the smell of noobs too lazy to read the main website thick in the air.

Yes, Halloween has fallen upon us once again, and I have to admit this right away from the very first glimpse of it, I could tell it was going to be good. All of the areas associated with the quest were dimmed in to a night-time gloom, and I think it was pretty effective with the various lanterns dotted about and the surprisingly good music. Two things were released in the same time and location: The event and the quest.

So, lets get the event out of the way first. It all begins with a witch called Maggie near Rimmington, and she asks you to go and get a bunch of various confectioneries. The way you do this is by dressing up in an appropriate costume and trick-or-treating people in Rimmington, Draynor and Port Sarim. If youve been to the 2006 Halloween event, youll pretty much have everything you need for it right there from your POH toybox (or Diango if youre a non-member or combat pure), but people who didnt may be a little disadvantaged. I was lucky enough to have some Shade Robes and a Reaper Hood, but I feel some people may be a bit left out. However, apparently, getting a few random things from Varrocks fancy dress store works just as well. If your costume is good enough, theyll give you some sweets, but some NPCs might not feel so generous and ask you to make good on the trick part. Thankfully, theres a way to give them this trick a look into the cauldron will unlock this years new Emote, appropriately named Trick this causes a flurry of bats to appear around you to scare NPCs into handing more goodies over.

Once youve done all this and given Maggie her sweets, youll get a set of Warlock / Witch robes, which is an ensemble of orange and brown striped robes. Not too bad, and the cape in particular looks quite good. Though...as a person with a male Runescape character, let me be the first to say that we kind of got the raw end of the deal here - the Witch cape looks a lot cooler than the Warlock Cape, which jus looks like another Wildy Cape - The witch one has a cresent shape to it and is half the size of a normal cape, which looks very good, if i say so myself. I feel a bit upset that guys couldn't get this superior cape as well...

However, I need to comment on a few things. Firstly, the Door-Spammers. In Port Sarim, the Jewellery Stores door shuts after you, only letting one person throughSo some people take it upon themselves to constantly go in and out to choke the door and prevent people from doing any trick-or-treating in there. I think I can speak for the majority of people who have seen these people that they deserve to have a popcorn ball stuffed up their nose, and bizarrely, this actually seems to be happening on the member servers as well as the non-member ones. But, theres not much that can be done about it, so lets just hope it dies down soon.

Also, it has to be said, the rate at which the treats are given out are a little unbalanced. That is to say, I keep getting popcorn balls and none of the other two sweets I needed. I literally had to pay a visit to each town twice just to get them all because of the ball-spam. Jag, I dont know if you can fix that, butcan you, because its more than a small inconvenience.

Anyway, onto the quest, which most people did in tandem with the event.

I didnt, because I wanted to focus on one thing at a time. Stupid me. Cue a THIRD visit to each of the towns.

Maggie, once again, sends you out to get a magic broom enchanted by three separate witches to finish off making her potion. Each of these witches poses a tricky little puzzle in order to get each part of the enchantment done, and while not reaching the difficulty, of Mournings End 2s annoying light puzzle, they are pretty difficult to do if you dont know how to go about them. Because of this, it isnt a long quest, but its very worth completing for a few reasons.

Firstly, that potion is equivalent to 10 genie lamps, and all of the doses can be spent on separate things which I found incredibly handy. And secondly quite probably the best part of it is the broom that you used in the quest. Initially, its only use is to sweep floors, but you can take it to various witches around the world to get it enchanted. Most of them just grant magic exp, but the Sorceresss Apprentice in Al-Kharid gives it the option to teleport you to the garden from anywhere.

Let me be the first to say that this is one of the most useful item teleports Ive seen in a long time (Astral Tablets notwithstanding), because not only does it take you straight to the garden, it is also a very handy shortcut to Shantay Pass without having to use Duelling Rings. This can let you get into the desert quickly, and its also very close to a Bank Chest therefore, this could be very helpful to Abyss Runecrafters and other such people that dont want to have to recharge all their glories every ten minutes. Also, the animation of the teleport is very cool to watch.

Lastly, there were a couple odds-and-ends updates today. The three most important ones, in my opinion, are the Compost Bin upgrade (no more click-spam, it loads all the stuff in automatically), the Ale Yeast upgrade (lets you buy multiple yeast at once buying it one at a time was very aggravating for people making homemade brews) and the Fairy Ring upgrade (clickable area of the Fairy Ring has been increased)

AndJagex has also mentioned something today that has probably got the official forums completely freaking out about a possible answer to one of the most asked questions this year Whats behind the Mithril Door? Apparently, A distant rumble has recently been heard just north of Baxtorian Waterfall... Ive actually looked into this, and remember that there was an unclimbable flight of stairs there? Its now climbable, and theres a very odd cavern up there. There are large dragon head statues around, and odd anvils that repel any metal that comes near it. Theres a lot of speculation as to what its for, but theres an underlying hope that it could finally be a place to smith Dragon Items. Other people believe they might be able to create Metal Dragons, all the way up to Rune. I dont agree with the former point, but the second one sounds plausiblebut no-one knows for sure at the momentall we can do is wait, see, and mess with more people using bat tornadoes.

a very well written article, well done =D>

Nice article, although to be honest the puzzles weren't hard. (and I did not use a guide before you ask)

I really liked the darkening effect around the three towns, it was almost like night. If they'd darkened the fog even more, I think that it would be very easy to create a day/night system.

I also had a small problem with the Jewellery shop, they really should rearrange that room and remove the springs from the door.

I solved all the puzzles in one try, lol. The animal one was based off a puzzle of a boy, a cake, a woman, etc. The dirt lines were like the matchstick puzzle which I solved in one try as well.

The only annoying thing was not getting the treats needed and getting mass amounts of ones you didn't need.

I <3 Gears of War 2.

Add me on Xbox Live and mention you are from Tif :D

Pot luck, and they are not tradable, though from what has been mentioned, it sounds like ther residents of one town may forget you already did them after you have left it... must try that, as I think I have done pretty much everyone I can find.

Yeah, I found once I left an area and reloaded the map; I could get candy from previous people.

I had to make 3 rounds again just to get the wrapped candy. I kept getting the popcorn balls.

Yeah, the puzzles werent that hard, if you knew what you were doing.

I love how jagex made those 3 towns.

I wish they bring the 3 decorated towns back next year.

The purple cat looks quite cool.

(You didnt mention that)

The broom dissapointed me though.

Last years poll, te second place was 'A Broom that can levitate its owner'

I took this as, you operate the broom, your character sits on it and you can levitate around as if you were walking.

You could not run while on the broom though so only walking speed would count.

Im allowed to dream though and now il never get a levitating broom, only one that sweeps dust and teleports me to shanty pass.

My thoughts on the broom exactly. A levitating broom would have been much more interesting, they kinda ruined it.

To be honest, I did NOT know about the cat until someone mentioned it. My mistake #-o

Very good article =]

One question though, which I'm pretty sure I know the answer to already: Can f2p also get the broom enchanted by other witches?

EDIT - Signature far exceeds our sig limits but since it's so colourful you can keep it.

Very good review, pretty much sums it all up. ::'

"Let your anger be as a monkey in a piñata... hiding amongst the candy... hoping the kids don't break through with the stick." - Master Tang

I really liked this year's halloween event. It was not really scaring, but you really got into the halloween-feeling because of all the jack'o-lanterns and the dark screen. The halloween sound was really good aswell. The emote is a bit towards the bad direction though, not my personal favourite this far.

Doing the event took me quite some time, since I just like you got balls all the time and none of the other stuff :P.

Overall, a great event. Thanks Jagex

Add me if you so wish: SwreeTak

Yeah, I saw the poll as well last year (I voted for the hood though :).

When I got the broom, I operated it, at least hoping that I would hover in the air for a second. I got "You don't know how to operate this yet" -.- . They could at least have made the teleports an option from the inventory menu, and given it the hover when operated. That would be more Halloweenish IMO. (and before you ask, I know it's a quest, just that it was released during Halloween)

the broom again was a dissapointment.. I just wish it was made floating somewhat

The following statement is true. The previous statement is false. 60% of all statistics are made up 90% of the time

andrew i love you & want you to have my babys!!! <3:

Finally, I get to save the Earth with deadly lasers instead of deadly slide shows!

i was hugely dissapointed in this event

far too easy and awful rewards

i would have liked the teleport animation of broom to not teleport you anywhere!

and ew and warlock thingys

Check it out, huge amount of effort has gone into this massive mod!

I don't think all is lost with the broom..since you cannot operate it "yet"...

I think they have left the door open with this one....this was a quest reward, and perhaps in another quest we will learn how to operate it

Er... someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 'operate' option on the broom the teleport to the Sorceress's Garden minigame?
