Windows 7

I'm actually pleasantly surprised so far, it may warrant an upgrade when it comes out from me.

Text descriptions on the buttons are gone, in favor of big icons. The icons canfinallybe rearranged; no longer will restarting an application put all your taskbar icons in the wrong order. The navigation between windows is now two-level; mousing over an icon shows a set of window thumbnails, and clicking the thumbnail switches windows.

Right clicking the icons shows a new UI device that Microsoft calls "Jump Lists."

The taskbar's system tray has also been improved. A common complaint about the tray is that it fills with useless icons and annoying notifications. With 7, the tray is now owned entirely by the user. By default, new tray icons are hidden and invisible; the icons are only displayed if explicitly enabled. The icons themselves have also been streamlined to make common tasks (such as switching wireless networks) easier and faster.

SWEET!

Looks really good to me. Hope they can deliver on their promises. I hope to have enough money for my new system around the time that it comes out, so I'm really banking on what they do with Windows 7. I really don't want Vista, and it's not because it's a resource hog or anything, I just prefer XP. And I work with both daily, so my opinions have a decent root behind them.

From the article, it seems like Microsoft has learned from some past mistakes, and is finally playing on the same field as Mac as far as the GUI and ease of use. I hope that part about switching from Vista to Windows 7 being seamless is true. That would make my life as a programmer so much easier, knowing I will not have to change really anything when the new OS comes out.

So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? Good job.
What scares me is that you're like 10 years old.
-.- im not that freaking young
You were a couple years ago.
It's not racist if its true.
Hmm... I wonder how one goes about throwing someone out a window in a mystic fashion :-k

The mental image for that is freaking awesome.

Yeah. It's using the same architecture so it should be fine.

Well, i hope DX11 will be a bigger jump than what DX10 was.

I'm gonna get this OS. A trimmed version of Vista will be nice!

I don't like how the Windows button looks tho, I don't know how to explain it... But looks weird with round+square activity field!

I can't wait for this one :). Looks very nice, but will it perform better? I think yes, with a new filesystem and a few differences like that.

Lol to say I just installed Vista on my desktop (that also has Windows XP Media Center Edition from when I bought it) and Vista runs much better than XP. I can't wait for that new one.

Srsly, I would love a Windows OS that was just the direct x files and other necessary stuff, and steam. That's really all I use my windows partition for, but once I boot into it to play a game, I don't like to go through the hassle of shutting everything down and going to back into linux, which just pisses me off.

It does look nice, I guess..

Looks better, i like the new taskbar. Vista looks bloated or something, i feel that it takes alot of space. Good job with getting rid of the widget bar. It's annoying.

Does anyone know what will the reqs be when this comes out?

It uses the same architecture as Vista, that means most programs will work correctly on 7, that was why i didn't use Vista back in early-mid 2007.

Imagine messing with themes it :D

I read some articles on Windows 7 earlier today, and it does look promising. I'm considering building a new PC whenever it is released. Everything is so clean and orderly. I like how they are taking steps to produce a task bar like the one in mac OS X (this is not a complaint, or mac vs. pc statement). To bad I read it is set to release in early 2010, when apple is set to release OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in mid-2009.

KDE 4 + Mac OS X dock anyone? The new navigation method just looks weird... Maybe I'll grow into it though. Hopefully they've learned their lesson and packed it all into one version this time. I'm going to look for more screenies.

What do you expect, Mac is always in advance. Their only problem is the pricing and the games compatibility.

I have four questions, just to start with... But, we'll have to wait for the release of "Windows 7" to know what the answers are... Anyway, here are the questions:

  1. [*:2qptsrzw]Will we need a hyper-beefy graphics card?

[*:2qptsrzw]Will we be able to use some old-style (Win9x/WinXP) functions if we so choose?

[*:2qptsrzw]In regard to #2, will we be able to mix-and-match as we see fit?

[*:2qptsrzw]Also in regard to #2 & #3, will we be able to configure our Task Tray to use the older modes in combo with the newer ones as well?

And here's to looking forward to a stack of answers from MicroSoft... Which, BTW, they have not really held to their company name and what it implies, have they? A company name like theirs, I would think, would refer to "small, feature-packed, nice software"... Not a pack of bloated elephants. :P

Interestingly enough, Windows 7 will make use of the windows micro kernel, just 40 megabytes in size. A nice improvement from the what, 1 gigabiclycle or more?

Ya, Apple is always ahead of the curve. Which is good for me since I use my MacBook Pro everything and anything. The gaming compatibility part sucks, but there is nothing they can do about that since apple doesn't use DirectX. There are also ways around it to if you really want to play games on a mac.

About prices:

http://store.psystar.com/ or build an hackintosh. There are plenty of options out there beyond what apple offers you just have to look for them.

That's still large, compared to kernel sizes back in 1990... All ya needed was 32 MB of RAM (at maximum) back then, to which only about a few hundred KB were in use with the system at idle. And heck, you only needed about 1 GB of disk space for everything, only about 18 MB (*gasp*) of which was needed for ALL of the core files and utility programs! And knowing all of that continues to make "Windows 7" look like a large rat... Sure, it is an improvement, but it ain't THAT much... LOL!!!

More like 32kb RAM with 50 mb hard drive for a high end computer. My dad and his friend were always amazed how much stuff could fit into a 1gb hard drive if they came up with one for PC, and that was back in like 1993.

You sure what you're speaking of wasn't more like circa 1986??? :? ... I'm sure that stronger PCs had arrived by 1993, otherwise ID Software's "DOOM" would have been a pain to play. :-k
