I'm not sure, if you tell everyone that you litter constantly will they ban you? I doubt it, I mean it's not the same, but I think jagex would be making their own rules subjective concerning how serious of a real life crime it was. With that said, I think the mod was a little out of their bounds.

No, no. But things such as threats against the president because of racial, or other hate. It is highly unrealistic that they would take action against you, or even report you to the Feds. It is just a precaution, and really for serious actions only. However, I am not saying you should talk about the candy store you robbed last week, as that could be seen as encouraging others, none-the-less appropriate for certain age groups, and could possibly result in action against your account. (Again, banning is highly unrealistic; it would only be read as a minor penalty, if anything.)

That's the same argument as saying that stealing a person's PIN number(IRL), or credit, is legal, because they are still "pixels" or undefined. They don't need a physical object in order to commit a theft. In fact, they are stealing bandwidth, which may result in the owner of the wireless network experiencing slower data times and fees to accomidate the bandwidth usage.

i'm pretty sure, i've not seen or heard anything about it and i've been a mod for 2 years. obviously if you are threatening to kill someone on runescape or something incredibly stupid like that, yeah then they should be reported. minor offences like this are just insubstantial and don't need to be bothered with by anyone.

No, no, no! You people are looking at this the wrong way! Yes, the guy with the wallet was an idiot, the guy without wireless internet protection was dumb. That still does not mean the wallet or internet is free to take! Despite what I believe about Darwin's law, it is illegal to take advantage of stupid people! Okay, fine, maybe the pmod was a little overzealous. Can we at least agree that if in fact the guy was telling the truth and he was stealing internet connectivity, it was not the right thing to do?

Are you serious? It's our duty to report crimes that we know of and have evidence of, and someone saying something on RuneScape is NOT evidence.

 

TBH, I'm really disappointed at how unethical many of the members of Tip.It has become. A couple years ago, almost everyone would have said, yeah, great, go PMod! Get that thief banned! Now everyone could care less. Yes, it is a petty crime, not really worth mentioning. Does that really mean everyone should do it, that no one should care? Stealing is stealing, whether you steal gum from a candy stand, internet usage from a neighbor, or money from a bank.

 

 

 

Also, just because the person does not PROTECT their internet does not mean it is yours to take. If a lady sits down to eat lunch at a cafe and leaves her purse on the back of her chair, it is still ILLEGAL to take it.

This has little to nothing to do with ethics, this has more to do with logic. It is not logical for Jagex to instruct player mods to report real life crimes, it is not logical for Jagex to ban accounts as a result of the player committing a real life crime, is it logical for you to think we're all morally corrupt when we say that the p-mod is an idiot for reporting something he can't even prove? No, no, and no.

Even if they consider it to be a serious threat, they can't go directly to the authorities...they would have to first contact the player(s) in question and make sure they weren't just joking around.

But, in real-life it's sort of like theft? Lets say I leave my erm... Bike outside unlocked, does that mean someone should take it because it's "public" (not locked)? No, it doesn't. Someones paying for their own internet and they're obviously not all that good with computers so it's not password protected, so another person is stealing it.

This guy is a criminal. He steals the other person's bandwidth, for which the other person has payed with hard-earned money. That the stolen goods are insufficiently secured to prevent a thief from stealing them is never an excuse.
