i wanna ask the community concerning the rares market, recently i see them going nowhere but down, it's as if the rares have met their crash. what are the factors that contributed to this crash and will it ever come back up?

newbankofrsyq0.gif

well i think a mojority of people are spending their money on new equipment (gs, armors, and of course skills) and less people are saving for the santa or the masks.

i know before the skill capes the rares were pretty stable and know for a fact santa was around 32 mil at the time for a long while as soon as they came out it dropped and hasnt stopped for the most part.

cuz right now they're dirt cheap, about 13.5 and i'm willing to bet they're gonna drop again. so in essence, would investing them at their low points be a good idea?

Rares are only getting more "rare" every day. I'd say so it, as santa's are bound to go up around xmas next year. Assuming you can hold on to it for that long.

An item that is discontinued will always be high in price if the desire for the item is there. I think right now most people do not want a party hat or a santa hat as they would rather spend their cash on skills, armour or most likely making more by merchanting it.

2007, before November, the rare market was invincible, or so was thought. Once stakign was removed, many old stakers quit, and sold their rares at rock-bottom prices so they could earn some cash before they abandonded the game. This same effect happened with the removal of the classical wilderness. It did not help that the grand exchange was released then, which caused many people to place their rares in there, in hope of a sell. However, people wouldn't buy them on GX, to expensive, so junk trading because the "way" to get rid of your rares. Before all of this, rares were considered to always rise, for their supply was no-where near the demand. However, nobody cares for them anymore, they are less of a status symbol. They will continue to fall, I doubt that the rare market will ever rise again. Godswords, Sigli shields, armors, and costly skill capes replaced the oldest items.

looks like jagex did a magnificent job of finally getting rid of the rapid rising rare prices....

newbankofrsyq0.gif

Makes you think that gs, spirit shields and all those fancy new drops were intentionaly added to get rid of rares. Jaxex has wanted to do that ever since it realized its mistake in making the rares tradeable in the first place.

if they're gonna rely on items to fight rares, eventually ppl will get more armor and shields. but rares will never rise in quantity...

newbankofrsyq0.gif

while it is true that there will never be more rares, it is also true that they have dropped alot in the past. I believe that Jagex does not like Rares it released in the past because they were the ultimate status symbol. With the advent of the skill cape, the rares fell some. Now, Jagex is realeasing more and more items that compete in price with the even the Party hats. Yes, the sigil shields are tradable and also are possible to make, does that really matter? I mean, killing the corporeal beast is ridiculously hard. And getting a sigil is a rare drop from it. Not only that, but they shields give huge bonuses, such as +20 mage att, or 30% damage reduction every time. How can a Party Hat compete with that kind of amazingness?

I am sorry to see the Rare items vanish as a status symbol, but because if the bonuses available, I will probably waste my money on the newer items instead of buying that Santa or Mask. However, I do like the Newer Rares. They show devotion and knowledge about the game. I personally love my Scythe, and every so often i bust it out with my Reaper hood, Shade Robes, and Skeleton Costume Gloves. I never fail to get a following. For that matter, standing in a bank and saying "Selling Scythe 35mil!!" always gets a few trades. And im talking about the ppl who actually put the 35mil up right away. :)

Rares will remain rare. People have a taste for rare items. Therefore I think there will always be demand for them. Also, supply will naturally remain limited. Allthough I do not know the causes of this sudden collapse, I am confident that rares will maintain a high price, and will, once they hit rock bottom, start to rise again.

Question remains if they'll ever reach their old prices again. It surely is interesting to see what will happen to them. I still think rares are a good investment, allthough I doubt now is a good time to buy them. I'll be keeping an eye on them..

i doubt they'll ever hit 2k per hat, which was the going price on the day of the drop hehe

What I know is that unless Jagex phases rares out of the game, either by making them common, or disappear, or all the players with rares disappear, their quantity will be finite and ever decreasing. Every time a player gets banned with rares, or quits, there are that many fewer rares on the market.

The only reason rares are falling in price is because less people want them for better items... items that are semi-rare. However, when these item's prices fall, the price of rares will increase.

Figure its like you trade in Gold. The amount of Gold you have never changes, but the amount of inflation (or deflation) changes its price.

i've been aroudn for ages, and have always kept an eye on rares.

in 2004, in the initial release of rs2, i bought 15 santa hats at 125k when they dropped in price. held onto them, and sold them later for 200k. and as people realized the fluctuation in prices of rares, many began to make a killing in merchanting. here comes the problems. people begin to make more and more cash at such a rapid rate, that rares, in turn, begin to escalate in price to maintain their position as a status symbol, so only the top percentiles of the rs population can afford them.

this causes immense rises in the price of rares, to the point in which where i once bought santas for 100-150k regularly, i could no longer afford the 30m+ hat.

enter skill capes. prior to these, there was no real way to show off the accomplishment of a 99 skill unles syou told everyone to look on highscores. the skill capes became even more of a status symbol, as skills such as herblore, prayer, and more recently construction permitted people to show off not only immense financial investments, but also a great deal of dedication.

to make rares even less of a status symbol, other items, equally expensive, and infinitely more useful became known in the game. these came about NOT to kill the rare trade, but instead to offer an advantage to higher level players for partaking in various aspects of runescape gameplay, as jagex noticed a trend in which once you reach a certain level, there isnt much else to do or gain from actual gameplay other than money.

the final blow wasnt in the fact that an alternative began to exist to owning rares as a status symbol, but instead in the trade limit. such a limit makes merchanting, impossible, and set a fixed price based on supply and demand. no merching means less rares are purchased. in addition, without the flexability of a free economy, it became much mroe difficult to accumulate multiple millions of coins in a day or two of work.

less ability for people to profit off rares, less trust in the economy after jagex limitations, less ability for people to make enough money to afford rares, and less incentive to buy rares in a game where items and capes not only can serve as a sign of wealth but also a purpose statistically, make the tradable rares essentially nothing more than items that are seen in junk trades for various peices of armour and weapons, ie 3rd age and dclaws.

rares arent what they used to be. they are simply more costly than they are effective and useful, and therefore, no longer serve as more than a reminder of how the game used to be.

I'll throw in my two cents. As 100% f2p, I might have a different view on rares.

Background: Rare prices are falling, this is true. I myself possess the cheapest of wearable rares, the green h'ween mask. I'm a very on/off/spotty player (took a break from g.e release abouts to this january, probably played for 4? months before that). I alway thought that the green mask would go with green dhide well, so I decided to go for it really early (like lv 15 or something, brand new to the game). Via some low key merchanting, skilling etc, I got some (t) and (g) and whatnot, nothing big. I left the game due to picking up something else, and eventually found my way back recently. I check out the new stuff, check out the bank, realize that things like wiz(g) have jumped from about 300k (as i recall when i bought them, might be hazy) to ~1.3 mil. So I sold the stuff and bought my mask. 10mil is no big deal to members(gwd, green dragons, nats, etc), f2p merchants (at least pre-trade restriction), p2p merchants, etc, but for basically all of f2p, it's still nice to have and fairly uncommon.

My thoughts on rares vs skill capes: Some skill capes I find really really awesome (prayer for one), but others, well, I've seen enough wc capes to completely stop caring. I guess the big difference for me is that when I see a cape, my brain says "time!" instead of "wealth!" (aside from construction).

As for jagex nullifying the value of rares: I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that were the case, but I've never really had to think about that, because I really really doubt I'll go p2p (I tend to play more than my time ought to allow when paying for games). They didn't want a past mistake to set the tone for the economy, so they've come up with various ways to nullify them without outright destroying them.

Personally, while it's true that Blessed Spirit shields, third age, etc, far outstrip most rares aside from a handful, I just don't really ever think about them as a major status symbol due to existence of entry into the population. The other game I played probably slanted my views as to the meaningfulness of godswords, spirit shields, etc. CB = small raid boss in my eyes, though I do commend those who have put in the time and effort to get to the point where they can kill him (execution wise, I've seen much much more technical boss fights). But it's merely part of the fundamental nature of rs, where the endgame (for definition's sake i'll define as lv138) isn't the primary focus of the game.

I guess I'll end with an analogy:

The game I was most familiar with wasn't too big on having things tradeable, but something very similar to the RS situation being discussed came up. There was a mount released that was available after a very very long quest chain open to whoever finished the quest first on that realm/server, as well as those who finished the quest within an hour (The quest was *significantly* longer than While Guthix sleeps-was 20 days before first person, backed basically by several hardcore guilds and contributions from an entire realm's worth of players, finished). As every server eventually had a person finish up the quest, this mount ceased being available. Period.

Even before all servers were finished, it was basically the ultimate symbol (it still is, after quite a few years). To compete with this mount were other mounts. Fantastically rare mounts which had <1/5000 chance to drop (a drop rate many times lower than the most powerful weapons in existence), at least one of them from an extremely difficult endgame boss requiring a decked out 25 person group with amazing coordination. These mounts would turn heads, for sure. I'd guess most servers only saw a handful of these mounts. But NEVER NEVER NEVER did/would those mounts every come close to the prestige of the discontinued one. Ever. This view I share is commonplace among that game's player base, which I believe is quite significant, and is what shaped my views on RS rares.

I hope I haven't offended people, and I'm sorry if this was too long. I'm going to sleep now.
