My parents won't let me..

I don't think a piercing is gonna kill an interview if you remove earrings/studs beforehand.

I can understand them not wanting you to have a nose piercing. I don't think it'd be bad to have one ear piercing, maybe you could come to a compromise with them?

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Your parents pay your taxes, rent, food, schooling, phone, allowance, etc. That's why they can tell you what to do and what not to. Feel free to ditch them off and all those nice goodies so you can look like a [wagon].

This. Their house, their rules. Until you pay rent as a tenant, you really have no room to complain unless it's just like a fascist household. I'm 20 and when I go home I can't have a woman in my room even with the door open.

And all this talk about nose piercings being unattractive, it depends on the person. On the right girl, they're sexy as hell.

Why the hell do you want to get your nose pierced anyways?

Also, your friend is an idiot.

This was exactly what i thought when reading that.

So I take it you've never had a job interview

But anyhow, I would try listening to them to hear why they don't want you to do it. If they don't hold any valid argument whatsoever, and be a fair judge on that (Always give your parents benefit of the doubt. They're your parents!), then rebel. Not in an immature way, but let them know you're growing up and you're going to have to make personal choices. Parents are there for pushing you in the right direction - not for pulling you along.

Gamestop doesn't care about these things, I don't have piercings, so don't take my word for it. I'm just making an assumption here, so there's that chance I'm probably wrong.

Honestly Zierro, half the people here don't play RuneScape anymore ;)

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

Zierro, you have a level 127, you still play. I'll never go back to the hellhole that is RS

Retail stores I've applied to always always always inquire about earrings. They're lenient to girls who has extra earrings. But piercings anywhere else other than the ear that can be seen or on guys? That's very different.

And even if you take them off, they can still see the holes and will be suspicious about it.

So then you're saying he should take fashion advice from Runescapers? Unless you are Napoleon Dynamite, I strongly disagree.

I'm not sure why they'd have some aversion to earrings on guys anyway, homophobia or "manliness" or something. I really don't care for them, do what ya want.

In most cases, probably true. But some Runescapers have fashion experience and knowledge. Regardless of their combat level (133 here... I think can't remember lol)

That's fine and dandy but what if you're working Mon-Fri and have 8 hour shifts? It's a health hazard in some places and in others it means your piercing is going to close up. Not all piercings close up but friends of mine with facial piercings and tongue piercings have told me from their experiences that they close up easily. Yeah you could find a job in Gamestop or something but once again, is it really enough of an income to give you the kind of lifestyle you want to live? If the answer is yes then hey that's good too. Sometimes less is more.

I'm on the same line of thinking as Barihawk. So long as I'm paying the rent/food etc I won't allow it. At 16 years of age it might seem like a really cool and trendy idea, maybe you even just want to express yourself. I haven't got a problem with the piercing I think whatever floats your boat but my job as the mum isn't to be my son's best friend it's to give him guidance. And I'd hate to think that doing something at 16 years of age might ruin his career prospects and he may regret it when he's 18. Hell, I wanted a nose ring when I was 16 years of age, it was the fashion back then! Every girl was doing it. But now when I think back on it, I'm so glad that my parents wouldn't allow it.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

First off, ignore the ones saying 'ew gross', its a personal opinion and anyone arguing about its from a perspective of dislike when you obviously like the idea is missing the point.

Its a tricky thing to choose, you have to balance the right for you to do whatever you like, given it doesnt affect anyone else, versus the rights of a parent to guide their child.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the piercing, you're sixteen, you'll be out of your parents house within a few years and if you still want one at that point you can always get one then,, whereas if you upset your parents and it causes bad feelings, its a lot trickier to undo.

Yes it's absolutely your right to get one, should you wish to do so. But why the hurry? What do you need the piercing for today that wont be the same in, say, two years time, when you move out?

Why the hell do you want to get your nose pierced anyways?

Also, your friend is an idiot.

Seriously. HEY GUYS I'M GONNA STAB METAL IN MY FACE. WILL YOU LOVE ME NOW.

Naw, that's mean. But you are shoving metal in your face plausibly due to peer pressure or pressure put on you by society's normal view of "cool" or "hip". When all you need to be cool is to stay off of drugs!

I'm only 16, so I don't think it's gonna pay well. I just need a bit of cash to fund my truck payments and my computer/gaming habit. I really don't see much of a use of piercings at work anyway.

I'm a little concerned about the opinion that because parents are paying rent and providing food they should have complete control of your life though. Every parent has the responsibility of paying for any child they brought into the world, its part of their choice to have a child and they have to stand by that no matter what.

But theres also another responsibility that a parent has, and that is to prepare a child for life in the world. And one of the things each child has to learn is to make decisions for themselves. At sixteen, when the child is getting ready to fly the coup this is a very important thing for them to learn. Kids are always going to make mistakes and the sooner they come to do that the sooner they will learn how not to make mistakes.

The nose piercing seems to me to be an ideal mistake to give to a child (assuming for a moment, the perspective of a parent who doesnt like the idea of a child having a piercing). It can be removed and it will heal up easily. It will probably affect their lives in a positive and negative manner, making some things easier and some more difficult. There is also a chance of it going wrong, but without life threatening consequences - the child at worse might have to live with a scar for the rest of their lives, so theres an aspect of permanent (but unlikely) consequences.

It seems like an idea thing to give as a choice to a teen.

Giving my son the choice to screw up his job opportunities before the age of 18 (when work experience is the most critical) isn't appealing to me. By the way, who said they wanted complete control over their child's life? That's a little far fetched. I don't think anyone here is claiming to want complete control over their child's life. Perhaps you're projecting something from your own teenage experience?

I seriously can not imagine why anyone would want to get their face peirced anyway. I am quite sure that someone has said already that your parents are being reasonable. I know I wouldn't allow my son/daughter to get their face peirced.

won't really mess up career opportunities unless that person is going to do something very customer related. i worked in a foam factory for a year and a half before i was fired for reasons somewhat beyond my control, made enough to pay my bills, pay everything i needed, and still have a good bit left over. the pay wasn't great, but considering i didn't go to college or anything, and could have moved up a lot farther, it was good. also if you consider the experience of that on my resume, should i choose to work in manufacturing some more, i'll make even more money just because i have experience now. there are plenty of options that people may not even think about. the reason i even thought about the foam factory is cause my brother-in-law works there, he helped me get the job. i just happened to love it.

basically what i'm saying is, it's fairly easy to find a job that will most likely allow you to have piercings and stuff that is out of the public eye. just keep an open mind about work, and you may find you enjoy a job you never thought you'd enjoy. benefits of both worlds. you do still have to consider the possibility of not being able to get a job though, especially if you are a very people oriented person.

Of course, it depends what you want to do for a living. That's like telling somebody who wants to be a body piercer or a tattoo artist that they can't get a piercing or a tattoo because it will ruin their job prospects lol If you were going for something more professional (and I use the term loosely/stereotypically because any job can be classified as professional) then it's best not to. Although once again, at age 16 the chances of knowing what you want to do with your life are pretty slim. Some people have a fair idea but that doesn't mean they will follow through with it. I wanted to be a psychologist, I went to university and for what? I got bored of it (It's not rocket science, it's like playing a game of chess, you take a probe, go closer to the king, the other then defends themselves with their move, take another probe, see if you can get closer until it's unguarded) and went in to retail/network marketing where I found I could make a lot more money in practically 1/4 of the time without putting up with people's crap. My brother as an example is studying to be a bar manager. I don't really see the point in my dad not wanting him to get a tattoo on his arm, he's going to be working in a bar lol And I didn't really see the point in my partner's parents telling him he can't have a motorbike or a discrete tattoo on his back that has dear meaning to him when he was almost 21 years of age lol There is a difference between being reasonable and being a control freak.

Why do some guys here want their ears pierced? I was talking about guys with their ears pierced and quite frankly, I think it looks girly. D:

But if you do manage getting your nose pierced and decide that it doesn't suit you, I hear you can get bad infections and they leave a scar. Make sure you clean it so you don't get infections. :o

I think you should make a list of all the reasons why you want a piercing or do a chart of the pros and cons of a piercing. Cheesy, but what the hey, try it out :P Then show your parents if there are more pros for piercings. If there are more cons, then you should re-evaluate whether or not to get one.
