Well, rap literally isnt music. Music does require instruments/whatever you call whats made from a turntable, or just noises.

 

Rap is *rap* not music.

If there's one thing I hate, it's people that are narrow minded when it comes to their music taste. And just because you don't like it, doesn't mean everyone else has to not like it.

 

 

 

In my honest opinion, rappers get their point across better than metal vocalists. Check out Plan B if you don't believe me. And in all honesty, I'm not really a big fan of the modern US rap scene, as I feel as though most rappers just want to make it big and as quickly as they can. Not taking anything away from the genuine artists though.

 

 

 

Stayin on topic, I listen to: Roots Manuva, Plan B, Public Enemy, N.W.A, Akala, The Pharcyde, Gangstarr, Terra Firma, Caspa&Rusko, 2Pac, Big L, and tbh - gym class heroes. etc etc

Besides, what does it mean that it requires no talen to make rap music (not that I agree by the way), that would mean that more good music is made. That's not something I would complain about. :thumbup:

Necro, awesome post, though I was a bit surprised at the lack of Atmosphere for some reason.

 

 

 

I feel actually quite embarassed that I haven't included Atmosphere now. They're very good, I like them a lot. For some reason I'm into Sy-klon these days; A so called psychedelic rapper, underground.

He did have a record deal but it broke down as far as I remember so his album wasn't released. His problem now is that he's lost his buzz, he never took advantage of the anticipation people had for him so it's going to be hard for him now. He has the same problem as Saigon.

That must be a [cabbage]ty situation. Everybody is looking forward to see something of you (other than guest appearances) and then it doesn't come and people move on (unless your record is called Detox of course), forgetting you.

It isn't just new artists either though. I'm waiting for Cuban Linx 2 as well. Raekwon has been saying that it was finished ages ago but it keeps getting pushed back (currently scheduled for this summer but no specific date). It just seems so easy to get a record deal but so hard to get a release date.

 

 

 

Papoose did supposedly get to keep his mega advance money from his deal though so it wasn't too bad for him.

Your voice counts as an instrument. Rappers use their voices, using their intelligence and creativity to create lyrics. Therefore it is music. You should probably learn things like this before you post.

Anyway, I admit i dont really know that much about rap other than the fact that every 'rap' song played on the radio a few years back really showed literally no emotion, nor did it have any instruments other than the voice.

 

But this was the kind of rap people thought was cool, with all the 'i do drugs cause it makes me cool' etc.

All rap music has at least a beat and some kind of melodic background. It could be a sample of another song, some bass, a simple synth/electronic bit, or something a bit more substantial. You don't just know little about rap, you seem to know absolutely nothing at all. Anyone with ears can hear that rap isn't just an emcee on a microphone, ray.

 

 

 

You should really check out some of the recommendations on this thread, because hardly anyone here seems to be into the shallow "drugs, money and hos" kind of rap you're talking about. I'd agree that a lot of modern rap artists are like that, but then again there are some who aren't, and there's a whole history of rap artists from years past that weren't like that either. There's plenty of emotion and substance in some older artists as well - check out Public Enemy for example.

Nono, it's quite fun debating.

 

 

 

@Ray: The opinions you have on rap are based around mainstream rap e.g Kanye West, so I don't think you can make much of a statement until you've started listening to some of the rappers that have been recommended.

 

 

 

Do you consider singing as music? Because if you do, then rapping should be considered as music if that's your logic.

I'm not really a big fan of rap, but I still think that it's considered music. Even though rap is portrayed as some genre that talks about [garden tools] and sex by TV/radio etc, it really can be quite meaningful so maybe you should check out the recommendations... This is kind of like having an argument with someone about Twilight even though the other person hasn't read the book - unless you have checked out some recommendations (Make sure you actually listen/read lyrics, don't just think "this is so [cabbage]" when it hasn't even started playing yet).

I hate it when some person thinks rap is all about "money, hos, ma cracka goin down wit ma ak47". You are probably right if you are talking about T.I, Gorilla Zoe, Eminem, etc. If you check out groups of A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, The Roots, etc, you will probably find the best rap there is. Don't single-handedly judge a genre just because you listened to some crappy acts.
