i like the idea of when im older and have my licence, saving some cash, packing up and going on a big road trip.

Well why don't you? I have a friend who has done that for the last 10 years and teaches English in developing countries.

Your dream is pretty much what one of my tattoos represent.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

I haven't done that much travelling, and would love to see more of the world than just the basics. I think it would be amazing to just pick up and leave, but I don't think would be possible for at least a few more years yet. I once had a friend who had travelled the world since she was born, been to probably every country you can think of, and lived in a quite a few of them too. She was always going off somewhere, doing something new and different, and she always said it was amazing, but she said she loved her home all the more because of it.

I would love to do what she did, but I don't think I could disappear for a year, I think a few months would be good enough for me, a few months, home for a few months and then back travelling.

Not exactly without communication, I want to go on a trip like Phil did.

EXACTLY. Only a little less organized. I loved it when he talked about parts where he left behind touristy crap and just experienced the places. That's what I want. An equal mixture. Because touristy crap is where you meet hot girls that might live in your nation!

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Sounds like Walden or Into the Wild...

Just make sure you know what plants are poisonous before you go and eat them :P

Though he died from fungus, not because the plants themselves were poisonous.

I loved reading the book and I agree the film wasn't as good.

I'd love to get away from it all like the thread starter suggests. I'll just ease myself into it though. :)

The book however, incredible. The movie does not do the book justice at all. With the book, you feel a connection with Christopher McCandless, or Alexander Supertramp. Even if you're not into reading, it's worth it. The movie just portrays the story, badly. By the end of the book, you'll be questioning a lot of things. It's great.

Really? I had to read the book a couple years ago for English and I absolutely hated it. Most everyone else in my class (or anywhere for that matter) treated him like some kind of hero for going to Alaska and was actually sad because he died. That's completely ridiculous to me; he went to Alaska with little to no knowledge on living in the wilderness and died because of his own stupidity. It's idiotic that he got a book which seems to idolize him. He deserved to die and I, for one, am glad his stupidity isn't polluting the gene pool.

You obviously didn't pay attention to anything but the story in the book. The book is more about materialism and values, than being an idiot and dying in the wilderness.

Phil, didn't you just come back from like a yr long vacation

Well, if you were really interested in isolating yourself, I guess you could hike the Appalachians (sp?) I've heard it's all trails through mountains and wilderness, maybe that'd be fun.

I want to it one day :)

I've thought about doing that at some point. Although, I have a long way to go before I can hike the over 2,000 mile Appalachain trail.

I feel like doing it yeah

bback to basics 8-)

I think everybody has thoughts like that once in a while when they just want to escape. There are some setbacks though and when you count them all up, you usually realize how good you have things already.

If I could go on an adventure, I'd definitely need to bring people along with me and a backpack fuuuullllllllllllllllllllllll of stuff. Plus the most important part would have to be the destination. I know about the saying that the journey is better than the destination and I agree but... without a destination you'd have no motivation to keep pushing yourself along during the journey. I guess that saying only applies after everything's over and done with. Oh and it doesn't work for 16 hour long car rides. :x

Yeah. Many people hike and camp the whole length of the Appalachians. I live right near the part of the trail that goes through New Jersey.

After spending 180 days in compulsory military training I learned to appreciate simple civilian luxuries like TV, proper tasting food, music, cars, etc... I wasn't even 19 yr. old. (I've read chinese youth including women have to spend 2 years = 730 days in compulsory service.. Holy..)

Being away from home for a long time especially if you're young (and forced) can be mentally taxing, but it also builds character. Think how many people just stay in 1 place for all their life & brag about spending a week in a forest 'bootcamp'.

If you leave voluntarily though, and do things you enjoy like traveling, it's probably going to be a positive, non-stressing experience. I haven't thought about it, but it sounds like a great idea, regardless of doing it alone or with another person like your significant other, etc.

lol my fiance' would agree with you very much so. It was the best thing in the world for him to experience a cheese burger or sitting down on a couch when he came back from Kapooka.

Yep yep though it wasn't to the extent that the threadstarter was meaning (ie Into the Wild) I don't think I could do it Alexander Supertramp style though since I like money too much ;)

So what did you do?

I live close to the sea, and there are alot of beaches that are free and no one ever visits them. I am planning to go to one, and i already know which one. Hopefully i'll be there a whole month on Summer vacation.

My dad told me he will help me pack food (mostly canned) and i know how to make a septic tank (i think that's how it's called) and i know how trap water on the desert (but my dad will bring me water), he will drive me to the beach and leave me there and he will visit me every weekend for a few hours to tell me news/stuff that happened/and bring supplies. I would love the peaceful state, like no one. I would take a few books also =P

I still doubt i will go.

But i so want it.

I'd really love to just get in my car and drive wherever the hell i like. See how far i can get without breaking down or getting arrested...

Hmm...i fancy going to the scandinavian countries...They're so crazy over there. Metal everywhere too. :D
