Basketball coach wins 100-0 and is fired..

I heard this story (at first I thought it was a win streak, but it was just one game). My friend's dad was there, and he explained it to me (he's sportsy).

The team that the winners were playing was a slightly autistic team. They were slower (in the autistic sense) than the winning team, and the coach was fired because he didn't hold back on a team that was of much less skill (therefore being unsportsmanllike, therefore being a douche (sorry)).

No one knew? That's pretty critical info... (I didn't read the whole thread)

We heard they were challanged by dyslexia, not autism though. And (correct me if I'm wrong) dyslexia doesn't affect physical ability?

i thought dyslexia was reading stuff backwards, like switching letters in words, or switching number around when reading. stuff like that.

Well, it isn't just switching around when reading. Most dyslexics have trouble with a lot of things, like differentiating between left or right.

There was a kid I knew from high school that had Dyslexia and he played hockey just fine. I worked with him delivering pizzas, and he did struggle with addresses and such, though.

In that case, my question is why are they even playing against each other in the first place? If you don't want to hurt the self-esteem of kids with a disability, it's probably not a good idea to be setting up organized sporting events against kids with no problems. It would almost be like contestants from the special olympics going up against people in the regular olympics.

Wow, seirously, if I was the other coach I would hate it if somebody apologised for that.

An apology like that is "I'm sorry we're so much better then you".

And again, I'd also hate being on the other team then they go easy on you.

Its happened to me alot (mostly badminton, facing top players...then they go easy), it really just makes you feel bad at whatever you're doing, like they know they can beat you without even trying.

Exactly, how can you pick up thier techniques and skills if they're not even bothering with them.

I think you can play better if your opponent is crushing you, compared to you playing them when they don't even need to try.

So if the game is supposed to stop if it became too one-sided, Why didn't anyone stop it?

I don't know Basketball though, so I can't really be a judge on that.

I can say that all of that intolerance to religion crap is why I'm very close to leaving Tip.It though. Seriously guys... -.-

There is a mercy rule in basketball, but it's 60-0 at the half. At least in UIL (Texas league of high school competition). 59-0 should have been called by the referees, for God's sake.

No, they need to be playing teams at their level.

The idea that any of you have ever played team sports in your lives is quickly becoming an absurd one.

If the team is so bad, why are they in the same division? Maybe they should join a division of lower standards. Also, you don't tell your team to miss intentionally, it's a sport, you play all out until the game's over. Their faith should have nothing to do with this sport, other than the fact that they believe Christ gave them their abilities.

I played basketball in a Catholic school league. There was no compassion or sympathy for the losing team. We played respectfully, and on the rare occasion we completely dominated another team instead of close victories, we didn't rub it in anyones face. We celebrated, talked amongst ourselves about our epic shots, etc, but didn't be jerks to the other team about it.

But I admit the coach did seem to do a little unnecessary acts. Full court press 4th quarter? Even if you don't want to sympathize with the other team, switching to a normal man-to-man or even zone defence would be a good way to give your own team a little break. Or bring out the weaker players to get a chance at playing. That's what my coach did when our team was up by a lot. In 6th grade I sucked at basketball so I always hoped that we would either crush the other team or get crushed by them so that there was no hope for a comeback so that my coach would put me and the other weaker players in the 4th quarter. Why couldn't he have done that? Don't overwork your players just to crush the other guys. Be competitive, don't necessarily go easy on them, but there's no need to go extreme to prove you're the better team.

But is crushing a team worth the loss of a job? No. The losing team probably was the type of team that lost 90% of their games, losing another game shouldn't be a big spirit crusher. Deal with losses. They're a part of life. If the winning coach had been a jerk about winning, I could understand him getting fired.

But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.

At least half the players on the other team only think they lost by 001. Okay, sorry, that was bad.

Anyways, if I were on the losing team, I'd prefer to lose against a team who played their hardest the entire team. And I've been in a similar, but less extreme situation before.

Ok that was pretty obvious, you'd think..

Sometimes you do get horrible mismatches, its always going to happen..

Especially in girls sports, where its usually hard for them to get a good game.

Well around here anyway (I don't know if womens basketball is popular there though) , I'd know, my mum always gets angry about my sister never getting to play sports.

Well you don't have to intentionally miss, but you should tone it down a bit. I thought that most coaches don't like to run up the score, as it makes you seem like a jerk. If my hockey or football team is winning 6-0 or 52-0, then my coaches will tell us to take it down a notch.

I'm surprised the girls themselves didn't play a little bit easier on them. There's no reason to be ashamed about winning, but being nice/compassionate to the other team would have been a cool thing to do (unless they made it obvious, that's just worse...).

just a thought, why didnt they let them get a single basket? Whether or not you agree with toning down the game its cruel to not let them score at all. This was a basketball game afterall, its not like soccer where you cant really give away a goal by lightening up. In basketball just one play of light defense would allow a basket.

If they were bad enough to lose 100-0 then, most likely, any opportunity to let them get a basket would immediately result in the opposing team knowing the winning team was going easy on them. I.e., I'd bet they were nice about it, but they weren't going to blatantly give them a free lane to the hoop everytime they were on offense. When you tone it down a notch, you don't play like you're playing with three-year olds. You play more or less normal, just not so intense. Basically, if you break a sweat when you're toning it down, you're probably doing it wrong.

Honestly when i played football or basketball we scored as much as we could as fast as we could.

Obviously with football you run the ball to take time off the clock but you never stop trying.

Honestly if I see a team purposefully trying to run the score up in a game when it's clear that the other team has no chance I'll assume the people on the winning team are [wagon]. When my hockey team leads by 5 goals or more, we go into a defensive mode and just run a trap at centre ice and dump the puck into their end.
