Do YOU know what to do when...

I'm curious about this. Would you know what to do if you say found some child pornographic materials on the street or in your house or say even if I or someone else on this forum (or any forum) posted some? What would you do? I know the answer is your meant to report it. I unfortunately came across some yesterday :(

I know I was to report it and I did but the thing was I wasn't too sure where or who to go to. I googled "report child porn" and I got a list of sites. I thought ok cool now I can report it and be done with that. But I was wrong. It took me like five or ten minutes to actually find a place to report child porn and that was on a totally different site to what went first (I did bookmark that page but hopefully I will never need to do it again). My point is I consider myself fairly familiar with the internet and the does and don'ts and know what to do in certain situations but it's one thing to know what to do in theory but putting that into practise can be hard.

After that incident I got thinking "do I really know what to do?" So now I am/going to read some sites that give out information on what to do and what not to do in certain situations. My question to you is: Can you put your hand over your heart and tell me you know what to do? I'm asking this because that incident that happened to me kind of opened up my eyes, and nowadays you do need to know where you can go for help with stuff like this and the other problems there is.

In my honest opinion I would not be at all surprised if there is someone reading this post and is one of them people who distribute child porn (or one of the other problems on the internet). Am I being too far fetched? I don't think I am That's why Runescape has the rule against asking for boy/girlfriends. So as I said above I would not be at all surprised if one of them is reading this post or is on tip.it forums or visit the site or even any of the fansites. I just hope that when/if it happens to you (hopefully it never will), you will know what to do. So stay safe and be wise.

I was mainly talking about child porn on the internet there, but it can happen anywhere, so it would be wise to know who you can go to in Real life to report it or at least talk about, whether it be the police or your parents or an older brother or sister. And know what to do if you think there is something illegal going on as well. Don't be afraid to report something or think someone else will because there is a chance they won't.

It's an interesting question. My first reaction would be to report it to the police, however if it is on a site that isn't based in the UK then there would be nothing they could do about it. Other than that I wouldn't really know what to do and would probably Google it.

I had a similar dilemma last year and ended up decided to phone Canadian authorities from England which was a lot of hassle and I'm not even sure if they dealt with it in the end.

I guess it's one of those things that you can't exactly prepare yourself for and you don't get taught or told what to do.

Will be interesting to see what other's think.

Ok granted but the one that I reported it to was based and Ireland and they say;

If the content source is traced to another country, there are two possible actions. If an INHOPE hotline exists in that country, then details based on the original report, including the Hotline's findings, are forwarded to the other hotline for processing. If the material is located in a country having no INHOPE presence, the Hotline will attempt to have action taken by providing details to An Garda Síochána for transmission to the source country through international law enforcement channels.

So whoever/whatever your reporting it to may be able to pass it onto the appropriate people.

My first reaction if it's on a forum is to report the thread to the web master, but if it's in public... I would try to call the police but only if I have the guts, not that easy to do :/

Ah, I guess it makes sense that they would pass it on to the appropriate people. It's one of those things I wouldn't feel comfortable reporting though because the police may not believe you just came across it if it was found on the internet.

Just pretend you didn't see them.
Which is what most people do and is what the perpetrator preys on. The mind set is that because you found child porn then it obviously makes you a pedophile. While it's not the case, it's sad that we live in a society that assumes too much about how people come across material.

I'd probably take it with me and hide it under my bed.

Dun Dun DUNNNNN!

I suppose I would report it, depending on where I found it.

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

It looks like most people do know 'what to do' - report it. What most don't know is 'how to do it'. I think starting with Google isn't a bad idea, and nor is phoning your local police. Yes, it's going to take more than a couple of minutes. After all, whoever you report it to has to make sure you're not hoaxing or trying to get someone into trouble out of malice. Also, most police forces around the world don't have time to be up to date with the internet, so sometimes it'll take them time to find someone who understands what you're saying if it's internet stuff.

No, pedophiles are not quite everywhere, as in one behind every tree. There just aren't very many people with that sort of weirdness, so it isn't like there are hordes of them. But they're persistent and smart enough to lure kids away from safety and will try to hang out where kids hang out, including in cyberspace, so you're right to think they could be here.

I think there would definitely be a few reading these forums, and a few who are playing RS and are members. You have to make caution a high priority and not trust too easily, but at the same time remember that 99.9% of people you encounter will be safe enough if you stick to the obvious guidelines: don't give out your real name or address, for example. And be very careful what you say about emotional and sexual personal stuff. Just remember that you need to have a line over which others should not cross.

I'm one of the relatively few players who's over 40. I set up an RS account to play with my nephew, who liked the look of it when we went searching for games to play. He's 7 - probably too young to work everything out on his own, but old enough to do most stuff. He learns a lot of maths and spelling and reading and problem solving while playing RS. We play together on weekends and I do grind work on my own to level up during the week. You can imagine how I feel about this issue and similar. There's no way I can completely convey my worries to him, and I wouldn't really want to in that he should be able to think of the world as fairly safe. But I can still teach him basic rules about trust and personal safety, so I do.

Just a porn movie? Heck i've encountered furry sex porn, bdsm, bondages, water bondages, hentai & childs porn. Nothing really suprises me anymore.

Whatever floats their boats.

What do you mean porn movie? Please elaborate for me.

Just pretend you didn't see them.

And more children will be abused in the process, letting that potential rapist get more... sick.

:wall:

So you're telling me that just going along your day is going to cause more little kids to be raped?

OT: This is the internet. A lawless land filled with inside jokes, pop culture and more illegal activities than in the international waters over the past 200 years combined. There is no law here. No government. No right. No wrong. This has spawned a lot of hate, and a lot of heroism. In some cases both. For the most part, I do know what to do when I see something illegal, especialy if it's dangerous. Just remember, internet issrsbsns, keep your rules of the internet in mind, rule 34 especially. This is the internet. Enjoy your stay.

Depends what we're talking about. If it's legit little kid child porn then I'd report it to the cops if it's not on the internet or use google if it is. If it's like girls my age sending pictures out then I wouldn't do anything. Because then like 90% of my school would be f'd.

Have you tried using the net in China recently? If what you say doesn't apply for a quarter of the world's population, and it doesn't, then your position is far from intellectually watertight. There is law here. What's more, along with the pedophiles undoubtedly reading these forums, there will be one or two LEOs dropping by every once in a while.

People have deluded themselves about the libertine possibilities of every form of communication, from scratching marks on clay tablets through printing pamphlets to phoning, photocopying, faxing, and right up to the net and cell phones. Don't be gullible. The net is not, never was and never will be free from rules and surveillance. What do you expect? It was invented by the defence department, not a bunch of hippies.
