iPod Video - Apple's back-up plan?

I never understood what was so great about the nano. Only a few centimeters smaller then the regular one, dosn't make much of a difference.

Only a few centimeters thinner?

Heck, the old iPod is around a centimeter thick!!! If you were to reduce the width of the iPod by several centimeters, you would be entering the concept of negetive measurements, of which there are none.

But I hated the nano. My friend(s) foolishly got one, the battery life is 6 hours, and because it's in color it sucks it down a whole lot! What's the point of having pictures with you when the screen is as small as it is? And an iPod video??? You've got to be kidding me. Apple has really brought itself down to a lower level.

Give me my black and white and I'll give you the good old iPods!!!

You just know that in a years time the Nano's will be 4 and 6gb in respective That way they will match both the storage and price of minis but it far more features. Its a great business model and will ensure next years xmas sales targets are successfull as well as this years.

Well, the first generation iPod minis (like mine) came in one size. 4 gigs, and it cost $250. They were successful, the reason the nano isn't is because it's just a stupid idea to begin with.

Give me good old music-only iPods and I'll show you good sales!

The I Pod nano seemed to be a big suces at first too.

I hardly consider over 1 million nano's shipped a flop. Sure they wanted more but come on. 1 million.

Look how many people traided in there old ipods for color ipods. And at the same price I can only imagine how many will trade in for video ipods.

A back-up plan in case the Nano would fail? The Nano would not fail, Apple assumed it wouldn't. And I can't blame them, it's incredibly sexy. No iPod can really fail anyway.

Also, it's not called the iPod Video, it's called iPod.

I think the ability of being able to download over 2,000 music videos on iTunes 6 for $1.99 each or TV shows $1.99 per episode will expand the market and make playing video on portable devices more mainstream. You can also download and play Pixar shortfilms, $1.99 each (I think). What Apple understand is that no one wants to watch complete movies on the go, or at least, not that many people. Watching short video stuff is definately something people would like.

Also, Apple unveiled the new iMac. It's got a built-in iSight (high-quality webcam). It's great! When you buy an iMac and first start it up the computer will ask to take a picture of you so it can be used in the future and stuff. Apple also demonstrated an app called Photobooth, it was hilarious, you need to check it out.

I think Apple should go back to their lame computers. I abhor iPods.

Lame computers...you're right. I mean seriously, who in the world uses Apple computers?

You do realize comparing those two things is pretty lame too, right. :P

Personally I think Apple made a bigger mistake to discontinue the iPod Mini when they released the Nano, but whatever.

I'm sure they know what they're doing

Omg, I completely agree. I personally own an iPod mini (silver, 2nd gen) and I really like it. However, I wisshhhhh there was an iPod mini photo also. I want a colour screen, and was so mad when the mini's got replaced by the nano. I don't want an mp3 player THAT small, and the headphone ports at the bottom are just :x

Dont get me wrong, the nano is cool, but just not for me. As for the "new ipods" (no name? just called the new ipod? wth?) I love them. Its another case of "you don't need it, but it could be useful" kind of things. I would love to have 30GB storage, but I dont really need it. I would love to have little movie clips on the iPod as well, and view pics. So I'm thinking about selling my mini and buying a "new ipod"

As for the iPod haters out there....meh. My friend hated the iPod, and had an iRiver. He finally gave in and bought a nano. Now he loves it. People hate the iPod because its so popular, and they just want to be different. For me, and many others, the iPod does what it needs to do, and looks amazing while doing it, all at a decent price. If you can find me another mp3 player that looks nicer, is cheaper, and has amazing software support like iTunes, then ok. But I highly doubt it :?

Good job Steve Jobs (no pun intended)

AD :P

It's not so much the iPod we hate, it's the fan club.

Seriously, it seems that every single person I know who posses an iPod or an iPod mini is a spoiled rich kid who got it from their mummy or daddy who lives $20,000 above their income. And the sad part is that they load like 20 songs on it and then get a belt clip for it, then dance around to it, swinging their hips wildly and pointing it in the direction of the onlookers, as if their iPod is a status symbol to behold.

The other thing is that people fill theirs with crap just so they can say they have like 5000 songs. I have about 320 songs, and 290 of those I know the lyrics and instrumentation to perfectly. I can lip sync, air guitar, drum, air-keyboard, etc. to all of them (while looking like a jackass at the same time :P), and most people just rip entire albums without question, just so they have a high song count.

Another thing, too - they believe that simply because it is the highest-selling, it is perfect, will never break, and is the best all around. This is simply not true. For instance, I own a Creative Zen Micro and it works much better for me than the iPod mini. It has an FM tuner, it's compatible with subscription services like Napster, swappable battery, more intuitive interface (it seriously is. It's much like a PalmPilot in that it has a submenu button and a vertical control), as well as a clock, Outlook syncing, more space for the money, etc.

Although the iPod may be more "reliable," I am yet to have any kind of problem, and I use all of the aforementioned features (with the exception of the Outlook and subscription service) regularly, and some of those things the iPod can't do or doesn't have.

An analagous example is the VHS vs. Beta war. Beta had superior picture and sound, but VHS won out because the licensing rights to Beta were hoarded by Sony (I think it was Sony). However, with the iPod and other MP3 players, it's not with licensing rights, it's with consumer blindness and unwillingness to research other options. Whenever anyone uses my player at school, they say "Wow, why doesn't the iPod have any of this stuff?" despite the fact a few of those people claimed that it was an "iPod wannabe" a few minutes earlier.

And, about the fourth-gen iPod - who is going to watch video on a screen that small? A PSP seems slightly understandable, as it's almost WVGA resolution and fairly big, but a 2.5" screen? No thanks. That seems so incredibly pointless. I suppose you could hook it up to a television, but who's going to carry the dongle, and couldn't you just load video files onto an iPod and play them on a computer anyway? It just seems like it's a gimmicky waste, but that's just me.

I wasn't planning on dooing exact measurements, but you get my point. Size isn't an issue and making them smaller is not a great implement seeing as they are allready very portable.

Heh you guys can hate apple all you want, but they dominate the market despite the fact that their products cost considerably more than comprable models from other companies, its just perfect design, their players are more like art pieces than gadgets these days... and heh, i dunno, but they are certainly selling like wildfire, apple can't make nano's as fast as they are selling

My nano shipped today, should have it in a few days *dances*.

As the the 6 or 7 people that replied to my post: How is that a bad comparision? He said because Tim Burton uses a Mac, they are not lame. If there not lame they are good. So by that logic if Tom Cruise (someone "important") drives an A.M. then that must mean that A.Ms are good cars.

Also as you may notice I agreed with you that Apple's are not lame, so this entire argument shouldn't have really even started, I take the blame for that but oh well.

On Topic:

BMW said it best. There really are no iPod haters, its a great MP3 player. There are just some people that get annoyed by the way many people blindly buy an iPod and then prances around with it with their nose in the air. Then they looks at your non apple Mp3 player and show you a facial expression of utter disgust that looks like they just saw you kill a kitten.

I guess I'm alone in my decision to get one. I love my current iPod, but it's pretty much dead on me, so I'm upgrading. The new iPod is $100 cheaper than I paid for mine, 10GB more, and all of the color capabilities. I think it's pretty cool that there's video, and yes, if it's got it I'll use it. Sure it might seem sort of impractical, but it's just one of those things.

While we're talking cars, BTTF... Ferrari hardly makes reliable cars. Sure they are sleek and sound great, but the old $80,000 BMW is likely to have so many more options than the $250,000 Ferrari. But it's a Ferrari. That's what people are buying, the product for it's face, not it's true value. I think the iPod, while not the best on the market, is the iPod.

And I load anything that might seem remotely interesting on my iPod, it just doesn't seem practical to let all that space go to waste.

rofl it wasnt top secret, first of all, how would u know it then? secondly, i saw it on my sbc dsl... and lastly, how dumb are you?

First of all, thank you for using the correct method of quoting me. It makes it so much easier to figure out what you're doing.

Second of all, when I say "top secret," I mean that everyone knew the press conference was coming because they announced it a little more than a week in advance, but no one knew what was going to be released. There was lots of speculation about what would be released, but the actual content of the conference was in fact top secret. And lastly, thank you for using personal attacks during the discussion. Seriously, personal attacks make your point stronger. They make you sound much more intelligent as well.

(Don't worry about the misquote, it happens)

Here's why I think its lame:

Tom Cruise is, yes, "important," but he's an actor and has no expertise in anything to do with the car he's driving.

Tim Burton however is a famous movie maker and he's using Macintosh software (Final Cut Pro HD) on Macintosh Hardware (iMac G5) to edit and produce the movie.

The difference is where Tom Cruise is merely purchasing something he likes and Tim Burton is using his expertise to pick what is the best tool for his profession. Do you see what I'm trying to say?

Were you serious? Your logic was exactly as flawed as his was. Both of you displayed excellent examples of 2 of the classic logical fallacies - appeal to the population, and appeal to authority.

Actually, those aren't classical logical fallicies. The Greeks (classical age), revered the use of an "appeal to authority" as rhetorical beauty. Which is also why you see the same rhetorical device repeated by people such as America's founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence, and Martin Luther King Jr. in things he wrote such as his famous "Letter from Birmingham Jail."

But to reiterate my point, the appeal to authority is not a fallicy. Why do you think in Courts of Law they have "expert witnesses." The opinion of an expert weighs heavily, and I think we can consider Tim Burton an expert at movie making. (Whereas Tom Cruise, as an actor, shows no expertise at "car driving.")

I would tend to agree, even though this isn't sitting right within me. Appeal to authority is often mistaken for equivocation on the word authority. Just like commercials say "experts say that this toothpaste is the greatest!"... what experts? Car engine experts?.... right, thanks for conveniently leaving that part out.

I think appeal to authority isn't all that fallacious if the authority in question is actually an authority on what he/she's speaking about. For all intents and purposes, we have to believe what they say about their products, else we'd be epistemological relativists, and that's just ridiculous....

It would be one thing if I just said "movie makers everywhere think Apple computers aren't lame." Or even "experts agree that Apple computers aren'ty lame." That's why I actually showed someone who is qualified to make that kind of decision and did. That kind of reference speaks volumes.
