noble_aloof
Either way, if they did legitimately have Autism, they should shut the [bleep] up. From what I'm understanding, it isn't like a death-dooming disorder that makes you act [developmentally delayed]ed (in the social sense). Actually I'm pretty sure autism is the #1 disorder associated with the term [developmentally delayed]. on topic with the thread: i highly doubt kids with autism are playing runescape. most of the time they are heavily monitored and i'd say only 5% or less would be able to properly play runescape. moreover, you don't see people with tourettes apologizing after they curse in public so i highly doubt these autistic kids who have (no offense) terrible social skills to begin with apologizing after they type random things in runescape. Omali
Autism, Aspergers, and ADD are the top 3 self-diagnosed internet diseases that people use as an excuse for acting like idiots on chat rooms and forums. If you are knowledgeable about the signs of each, you'll be able to tell who is using it as a crutch, as opposed to who truly has it.
Gigatiran
Really? I never seen anyone use that excuse for anything...the person is probably a dumb[cabbage] who might as well be labeled autistic if he's too stupid to not know that he isn't. This thread should be locked, discussion is pointless...it's a bunch of people who really don't know what the [bleep] they are talking about. Big_Stingman
No one has ever said that to me, but I still have met my fair share of Runescape idiots. I usually just ignore them, as there are plenty of people that are not idiots that I would rather communicate with and not waste my time with those said idiots. 3hitm4g3u
It's like this one dude a while ago who was spelling words in a scottish-accent kind of way. I asked why is he speaking like that and he said oh sorry i'm scottish. Tried to explain to him how IRL accents don't affect how you type but he couldn't grasp that concept...Maybe he was autistic...Either way I doubt he was telling the truth, just like the people in the OP. Youmu
I've never actually seen anybody say they got autism in Runescape before. :-? However, if they really do have autism, they wouldn't even be playing Runescape now. They must be joking or something. Me_Hate_Libs
I'll pretty much rip anyone online. If you come on and don't act normally, I'll call you out on it. I treat everyone exactly the same, no different whether they have autism or anything else for that matter. I don't know a lot about autism, but I don't think one of the side effects is to turn them into a crybaby. If they can't take it, oh well. :^_^: This website and its contents are copyright © 1999 - 2010 Jagex Ltd.
kenaareke1
My guess is that they are most likely faking, and i hope they get banned for it. Autism is no joke, and like people above have said, those with autism lost likely aren't going to be playing an MMO. Shame on those who claim they have it. I'm sure even if there were autistic kids/adults playing, they wouldn't be shouting random crap in the first place. You have to actually type stuff, it's not like there's a microphone thingy in the game that hears what you are saying and types it. And this random blab sounds more like Tourette's, and people with Tourette's FOR SURE won't be playing an MMO. The people who you depict in your topic start look more like complete morons to me. Doubt it's autism. Autistic people don't understand the world around. They focus incredibly on details, take everything literally (don't understand sarcasm), avoid eye contact, etc. It's an impairment of social interaction.. and that doesn't include typing nonsense on your keyboard. I'm sure there's autism in Runescape, with that much players... but the people described in the topic start ain't autists. Or they just use it as an excuse to act like a complete jackass. this man speaks the truth. i have tourette and i play rs.

Nicolescat
"The reason for my doubting is that it's kind of something you want to keep secret." How do you know this? I have Asperger's (diagnosed by an actual psychologist and psychiatrist, not internet self-diagnosis) and I'm quite happy to admit to it. I don't go around shouting it from the clifftops, but if it's relevant, I'll mention it. Like in this discussion, so you know where I am arguing my point from. Likewise, sometimes I'll try and explain in game if people react strangely to my normally stilted way of talking and "it's just the way I speak" isn't sccepted as a good answer. I have been told repeatedly "nobody speaks like that" - well, I do. It's not something to be ashamed of in my opinion. There are others who may disagree, but that's a very broad statement to make. That said: In Runescape I am a polite player. I don't name call, I am kind, though I generally stick to myself and won't start conversations on my own and won't always respond to other people depending on how I feel. I'm not the most socially aware person but I manage to get through playing just fine and most of my interactions with other players are friendly. If not, I tend to ignore them. As or why autistic people may choose to play MMORPGS? They're a good place to interact even to a small degree. It's easier than having to pay attention to facial expressions you don't understand and so on... essentially, it's far easier to pick out a person who is autistic in real life than online. Online is a good practise to how to interact. I'm a pretty coherent forum poster but saying something like this directly to somebody would go less well and I doubt I'd be able to formulate my thoughts as concisely as I can here. (Well... this is concise for me, anyway.) On the internet autism is sometimes used as an excuse to be rude. I think most people who use it as an excuse are probably lying, or if they are telling the truth then it's still not a good attitude to have. It's not an excuse to be rude, it's something you learn to cope with and adapt to, and people on the internet, especially, won't care what people have - if they're rude, they're rude, they'll be treated just as rudely back. dbzman912
From my personal experiences in life, having known people with autism, I can say that it's truly impossible to know if someone is autistic from a video game. I have seen autism in ALL forms. I have a friend with Asperger's. The only way you'd ever know he even had autism was the fact that he gets very closely attached to things, and even that would take some time to pick up on. However, I've seen autism cases where people never utter a word, or never shut up, or babble incoherently. I have seen people with autism who's intelligence and diction could put everyone I know to shame. The point is, it shows up in so many diverse ways, that if someone really had it, there'd be no way to know.

Adellund
I really cannot comment on the subject, even though i have proof to substantiate my claims of being diagnosed with ADHD(and to some extend, Asperger's syndrome to a certain extend). Yes, people who type "I r Autist, roflmao/lol" can't with a certain garantuee be portrayed as autists, but they cannot be denied that possibility either.. and for any who wrote my earlier comments, I am truly sorry if I happened to offend anyone. I just needed to vent some fury out, because I only saw a miniscule of the whole picture.. Woohoo........

burquedout
I feel bad for people that need to justify their own immaturity by saying they have autism. Autism wouldn't cause somebody to act like an idiot. Whether they have autism or not it's no excuse to act stupid, I know a couple people with autism (high functioning) and though they have trouble acting "correctly" in social situations their online interaction is almost entirely normal. They also would never act like an idiot and say "it's OK I have autism." I havn't seen this kind of response on runescape but they deserve criticism whether they are telling the truth or not. If they do have autism wouldn't you think they would want to increase acceptance of their disease instead of pissing people off? Every autistic person I know works hard to act socially acceptable and if they do something wrong and you tell them flat out they will work on fixing that, they won't say "I have autism" and continue with the inappropriate behaviour. dirk4slayer
To be honest, if they reply to you using Autism as an excuse they already know that they're doing something wrong and know that they can do something about it. Thus if they use it as an excuse, no matter whether they actually have it or not, they're just plain [wagon]s.
