March 11, 201115 yr I've seen that picture already....because chara is as tall as he is, when he follows through with his checks his arm often ends up at head level. Should he not check because of how tall he is? "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti

Should he not check because of how tall he is?No you're right Chara should be allowed to wash people's faces in the boards. We let him sport a longer stick than the limit, might as well bend another rule.Come on. Are we going to have to technically analyse the video? His intentions were pretty crystal clear... watch it again for me please. I too did not think it was a dirty hit until I rewatched the last millisecond of the hit where he literally pushed his face into the boards.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF1Ang3DLEQ
March 11, 201115 yr No you're right Chara should be allowed to wash people's faces in the boards. We let him sport a longer stick than the limit, might as well bend another rule. You do realized that players get washed into the boards dozens of times a game? It's a standard defensive play - you finish your check to negate the threat. Paciorretty was beating him on the inside with more speed; chara did what any good D would do and rubbed him out into the boards. Come on. Are we going to have to technically analyse the video? His intentions were pretty crystal clear... watch it again for me please. I too did not think it was a dirty hit until I rewatched the last millisecond of the hit where he literally pushed his face into the boards. I've seen the video countless times already. It's a standard rub into the boards...he finished his check, like every coach tells every player to do. As I've said countless times already, any other part of the rink, it would have been a non-issue. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
March 11, 201115 yr Should these people be punished though? I'm going to have to say no, due to the way the game is currently. I'll throw out an example: todd bertuzzi. A little over 8 years after that 'hit', he was still able to play/be a part of the game. Was he a good scorer? No. So then why did detroit sign him. They signed him because of his agression/ability to deliver team-inspiring offence. Should chara be punished? No. Chara was hired by boston for exactly the same reason as any other defenceman is hired by any other team: to inspire the team with pointless agression, and to make sure that the enemy doesn't score.

Paciorretty was beating him on the inside with more speed; chara did what any good D would do and rubbed him out into the boards.I was specifically calling out the face washing. To me, there's a difference between a check and pushing another man's face into the boards. Whatever, I honestly don't care enough to nitpick this much. Our values differ and so we see the situation completely differently, lets just leave it at that.
March 11, 201115 yr Ok, two things here. Should these people be punished though? I'm going to have to say no, due to the way the game is currently. I'll throw out an example: todd bertuzzi. A little over 8 years after that 'hit', he was still able to play/be a part of the game. Was he a good scorer? No. So then why did detroit sign him. They signed him because of his agression/ability to deliver team-inspiring offence. In my opinion, bertuzzi should have been permanently banned from playing pro. Should chara be punished? No. Chara was hired by boston for exactly the same reason as any other defenceman is hired by any other team: to inspire the team with pointless agression, and to make sure that the enemy doesn't score. Chara was hired by boston because he's excellent at what he does: keeping the puck out of the net. "Inspiring the team with pointless agression" has nothing to do with it. March 11, 201115 yr Nothing to do with it? Yguy: watch braveheart. Same principle of william wallace killing 100men also applies to hockey....sorta.
March 12, 201115 yr The intimidation game happens in every sport...by hockey standards, chara isn't involved in "pointless agression" at all. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
March 13, 201115 yr Intimidation and fighting are more or less the same thing though in any sport. People will always be as afraid of a taller/heavier guy as they will be of a guy prone to fighting 2-3times per game. If you suspend chara, then you'd may as well suspend every guy who's even laid a hand on any other player, including people in the past. 'Gretzky, you've shaken hands with 2.3million people, and 10,000 hockey players. You now set the record for penalty minutes!'
March 13, 201115 yr Uh ok as a neutral Oilers/Wild fan... the arguements are getting kinda rediculous and off the point. But..... Got a Cal Clutterbuck jersey for my bday
March 13, 201115 yr Noice. For my brother's 15th a few years ago I got him a signed marion hossa detroit one.

March 13, 201115 yr Cool signed  It's sad how Koivu's out and the Wild are choking. Playoffs are looking far far away now, maybe next year
March 13, 201115 yr Yay we won :D Gotta beat Tampa on monday now... "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
March 13, 201115 yr Mmhmm...I actually hoped that minny made it into the playoffs, seeing as they're the only real team out there that could provenly kill san jose (12-1 vs them in the past 13, outscoring them 41-17 in those games). Can't wait till the playoffs start though, seeing as I already have most of my 'live bets' ready. Let's just say that should I win on all of them, I'll be buying that brand new house....

Meh -- what'll happen if San Jose tanks again this year? I wonder ...
March 14, 201115 yr SJ did fine last year till they met Chicago.... Crosby skated again today as well. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
March 14, 201115 yr During numerous years, san jose tanked after performing good in the regular season. You may be asking yourselves 'why do you then have so much faith in them this year?'. The answer is goaltending. During the past 5 years, when the sharks shifted over to the post-season, nabokov's g.a.a. crept up from an average of 1.37 to an average of 3.58. Now that nabokov's gone, the sharks have a legitimate chance.

March 14, 201115 yr Let me put it in another perspective then: nabokov costs 6m per year, and is cruddy in the playoffs. Nittymaki costs 2m per season, niemi 1m per, and both have better playoff records percentage-wise compared to nabokov. Sure, they could use better goaltending, but the current ones they have now aren't too horrible.
March 14, 201115 yr Niemi makes 4m a season. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
March 16, 201115 yr Well, I have to say, once again, the New Jersey Devils are frigging ridiculous. If they make the playoffs, Lemaire will win the Jack Adams, no questions asked. And if they play like they have been, if they make the playoffs, I think they're legitimate cup contenders too. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
March 16, 201115 yr If tampa makes it past the second round, then their coach will win the award. If pheonix makes it to the cup final, then their coach will win it. If the devils win the cup, then maybe, just maybe their coach will win it.

He can take a noting team going nowhere and turn it into a solid team. Of course, he learned his craft at the feet of the Hockey Coaching (Jedi) Master: Scotty Bowman.
