What do you plan on doing for Hanukkah?

Are you really Jewish? I've never seen you post anything about being Jewish.

I'll be in Israel during Chanukah this year on birthright. I don't know what we'll be doing for it but I'm excited!

Lol why would he need to have talked about being jewish? But im not jewish so i shouldnt really post i guess.

I know some Jews, they hate Hanukkah, apparently they get lame presents, so they wish they celebrated Christmas.

Eww, Silent Night is boring, I played it Freshman Year. Last year was so much better though, we got How The Grinch Stole Christmas. It was like the most fun Christmas song we've ever done.

Bah yours is better than mine we get a "Christmas Packet" with songs that we have played since 5th grade. On the plus side we only play it at one concert per year which is for charity.

Also, I'll be spending my Hewbrew Holiday with my grandparents for 8 crazy nights like I do every other year. It's not about the presents. It's just a good time regardless.

My Step-Father is Christian, but I and the rest of my family are Jewish.

 

We made a compromise: to celebrate neither.

Then they aren't really Jewish. Simple as that. Cause I don't know 1 person from Israel who would rather celebrate Christmas (which has absolutely no historic value) then Hanukkah.

I'm going to be going home for a few weeks this holiday season, as I had not gone home last time we had a break (boarding school). While I am born Jewish I have never felt that the true essence of our region is the sacrificial [cabbage] and all that, more so the lessons taught and learned. So yes, I will be celebrating this holiday in one respect with my family, but I will not be thinking of the Maccabees or anything of the sort, just the moral of the tale. The holiday season is a wonderful time and I urge everyone to enjoy it regardless of their born religion.

Hanukkah is such a nominal holiday even in an orthodox prospective; it is simply celebrated so widely and outwardly due to its timing around Christmas.

 

Even if someone didn't celebrate any Jewish holidays, or practice the belief of Judaism at all, they could still consider themselves Jewish. The word isn't confined to the realm of religion at all anyways, it can also imply a culture, lifestyle, and, in some circles, race.

 

Also, you seem to think that Israel is comprised only of Jews, which is totally not true. The Christian percentage in Israel is larger than the Jewish percentage here in the US, and about 1/5th of the population is Arabic.

 

My advice is to either accept the holiday for the modern consumerist ritual that it has become, or learn more about Judaism before you start telling people they aren't as real as you.

Instead of having multiple topics for every different holiday this season we'd like to ask everyone to post in this Happy Holidays thread. Feel free to discuss any upcoming holiday whether it be Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Pancha Ganapati, or even Festivus there.
