In other words, they extend from light sensitive cells towards the incoming light and then converge to puncture the retina, forming the optic nerve and causing a blindspot in our vision. From what I've been told, if your eyes were to remain open they would be shot outside of your skull. I cannot verify though, for obvious reasons.

I've done it before and I make it a challenge to keep my eyes open, it only feels as if you tightened your cheeks.

Swallowing air bubbles can keep you alive like breathing, but it hurts a lot and takes some practice to force it down the right tube.

So it is not impossible, just very useless.

I read in Ripley's Believe It or Not about a man used for space testing who was sped up to Mach 5 or something and then stopped extremely quickly. The force of his eyes hitting his skull gave him black eyes, and I have a feeling that even if his eyes were closed, the eyes would come out.

 

And I think I've also heard that breathing through a long tube would suffocate you, since the Carbon Dioxide can't escape the tubing.

Circular breathing is very difficult but entirely possible. It involves storing oxygen in your cheeks, then pushing it out while inhaling. It is a required skill for playing the didgeridoo, and is also applicable to the flute and other instruments, but with the flute anyway it ruins your sound.
