Ping rates

Recommended Posts

I am wondering what most people get as far as low and high ping rates when logging in to RuneScape.

The lowest I see is 78, but that's rare. 79 is a bit more frequent, but 80 even more. The high is about 284.

Since it affects gameplay, I was wondering if my connection was a slow one, fast one, or pretty average.

Not sure how fast my internet connection is, but the lowest I ever see is around 55-60; the highest is 200 something.

I'd say it is at the upper end of average. Mine is generally around 45ms to servers in GB. The highest I've ever seen it at when using local servers is 145ms.

However, latency can depend on other factors; e.g., the load of the server you are playing on. The first thing I would do if I were to start lagging is change to a different server.

Latency generally has very little to do with connection speed when the connections in question are faster than 56k (dial-up).

I wouldn't worry about ping personally... does the gameplay seem fine to you? If so, there's really not much need to worry about it. Generally in a game such as RuneScape, a ping of 200ms probably won't mean the difference between life and death, in something like an First Person Shooter, a ping that high would be very noticeable and could well mean you dying rather than living. Generally in FPS games, a ping from 0-60 or so is optimal, 60-90 is acceptable, 90-160 is playable but not great, but is to be expected for transatlantic connections. Anything above about 160 is usually terrible.

But as I said, this probably is not the case for RuneScape.

I suppose I could have been more clear. Recently I've been having more problems, ergo the post asking for ping rates. Gameplay will be fine for a little bit, then a little lag will creep in, until suddenly (and isn't it always in the worst combat spots?) I lose connection and it has to reload. I thought Java might have been the problem or the browser or...well, a whole bunch of things. I can't figure out what it is, but I've wondered about this for a while anyway.

RS updates once every 0.6 seconds I believe. In which case as long as your under 600 you should be fine, however I'd aim for 300 or less.

I just noticed that my ping rate jumped from high 70s to the best available now being low 90s...did Jagex do something (is it the same in everyone's case?) or is it my ISP?

My home world has a ping of 1.

Ping of 1 means like you're right next to the server...

Anyway, Aussie worlds I get 50ish and non Aussie worlds are around 200-250.

That's more of a connection quality issue imo. Like Peter said, MMO's, especially RS, don't necessarily need super low ping to function. Ping between 100-150 is just fine for RS, and you probably wouldn't notice any delay for anything under 200.

Try running this test, and posting your results.

On my dial-up, the best pings are about 170-190. I start having real issues in the upper 200s.

SportsGuy, your pings look rather normal to me, slightly more stable than mine, TBH. ... I'm personally getting a range of ping times on the RuneScape servers from 34 ms (awesome) to 331 ms (miserable) here on 5 Mbps/768 Kbps (U/D) Verizon DSL... Not exactly my cup of tea as it is a little too variable for my general usage habits. :| ... However, as long as I've stayed on any server that has less than 200 ms ping with RuneScape, I've usually been fine. B)

BTW, I may post an update after moving in the nearby future to Verizon FiOS... Stay tuned! :D

Well, I said that I may post an update... and here it is! I'm happy to announce that after a slightly annoying long day of upgrading to 25 Mbps/25 Mbps (U/D) Verizon FiOS, I'm now getting far faster pings and page loads. Fastest world is giving me a ping of 15, and the slowest is now giving me a ping of 320, which is a definite improvement over what I was getting before. Still not entirely my kind of range, but at least it isn't as delayed as it was before. :)

I'd say try and aim to play on worlds with a ping lower than 100. Anyway, I can get a ping as low as 10 to some UK servers, but 300 to the Australian ones. If anyone's wondering, I get Sky internet, Download is about 5-6Mb/s, upload about 800kb/s

Ultra low ping only really matters for FPS/Action games like CoD or TF2 where a split second makes all the difference between a kill or a death.

I go just fine with 100+ ping in FPS games.

Ever has happenned to you that you knife a guy before he knifes you and you die by his knife? Also die by few bullets when you have to fire a whole lot of bullets to other people? That's what happens when I play in 100+ ping FPS games. (maybe a little more)

I've seen negative ping rates in the lobby, generally -1; what does this mean? Is it good, or bad?

-1 (or 0 in NXT) is just a placeholder and means it hasn't been tested yet or it timed out. It has to go through and ping each server individually in sequence (generally several times and take an average) and that takes some time. If you hit refresh at the top you can see the list being populated.

So if I get negative pings for any world, I should hit the refresh arrows, and make sure I get at some sort of positive whole number before I login?

Well, for those who don't know. Ping/Latency is how fast or slow the connection from your network/PC take to connect to the server you are connecting to. Also, having high download and upload speeds does not improve your ping.

For example, I have Satellite Internet with 15Mbps Down and 5Mbps Up. These are decent and allow me to watch/stream in 1080p. So with 15Mbps Down and 5Mbps up with a 700+ Ping I am not capable of playing FPS games, due to how long it takes my connection to communicate with the server I am playing on/connecting to. Some of you might be asking..but my ping is only 700ms, why can't I play a FPS game? Well, even though 700ms sounds very small because it's calculated in Milliseconds, doesn't mean it's that small. This is quite large for communicating with servers. This is why lower is better and higher makes it impossible to play FPS games.

Now, for me personally I live in the mountains and am currently running on Satellite Internet (Which is horrible).

My ping while playing RS is anywhere from 750ms - 980ms (ms = Milliseconds). Now for those who play FPS games as well as mmorpgs, you would want your ping to be anywhere from 15ms - 90ms, ESPECIALLY for FPS games.

Again, for me I don't notice my high ping in RuneScape at all. When I click to loot an item, it is looted immediately for me. Now, when I try to play Counter-Strike, I can't even move..or so it seems. This is because FPS games require a much lower ping (communication time) to bring up positions of bullets, players, objects etc..in real time. So I can't play FPS games with my connection. However, I am moving to Florida Sunday and will have broadband Internet.

TL;DR

Good ping: 15 - 90

High "bad" ping: 150 or higher.
