Programming and Web Design subforum

I'd like to table a motion to create the new board and add Laikrob to a special usergroup that doesn't have access.

Kidding, yeah tutuorials/basics of programming would be a lot of fun to make and very useful :)

hope to put this up tomorrow evening EST..

Need to write the rules up for it, and not doing it at 1:35 AM....

While I sleep and go to class, any rules in particular you guys want?

I'm thinking

No Malicious code

No Homework Help

No recompiling other programs?

No stupid threads saying "how duz i program wow game lul"

Nah those rules look fine, relaxed rules be better anyway ;)

Could always make more as needed.

No recompiling other programs? What do you mean?

I'm guessing its to avoid a million and one "Can someone compile me x program", "Can someone compile x to work on a Mac", "Can someone compile x to work on a PSP", etc.

Joe's correct, i'm uncomfortable with passing [Caution: Executable File]s around from user to user - although i trust people like yguy and dsavi to - i'd rather just make it illegal because i can see that being abused easily.

also posting no say leaked source code to half life 2 or something xD. or source code of a program like word, runescape, something with an owner with money who can get pissy.

Yeah posting no source code should definitely be on there - thats where legal issues would come into play and we don't want that. Maybe the file upload feature of this forum could be used for passing source files? Obviously it would need to be moderator reviewed...

Is the 'no homework help' stipulation truly necessary? Seems like excess verbage. I could just as easily say "This isn't for homework" for something about java stacks and queues, but it's actually a 10pt assignment that I'm completely and utterly stuck on. (Or, for those with less sincere motives, weasel the community into getting the ball rolling on a big project for me)

That shouldn't be a problem really, I think it only covers things such as getting people to write your entire code for you (or large chunks of it). There's no problem asking for help on stacks or whatever if it's pointers or just advice, as long as you then write the code yourself of course.

darkdude is right, i have no issue with people coming with help on a schoolwork project or assignment as long as they have made a good faith effort on doing it. Sometimes an extra pair of eyes during debugging is critical.

I was thinking

could be used for code. xD

Just have a thought about things that are already open-source; you'd let those be posted, or snippets of them, right (obviously not the whole source code, that'd be pointless and long)? If they fiddled with GIMP's code and found something interesting they could post it, yes?

Of course, the whole point of open source is free distribution - modifications should be allowed and encouraged imo.

And Das, your brilliance never ceased to amaze me. ;)

It's live with rules.

I couldn't resist #5! :P

edit: Open Source is open source. Just give credit to the original author!

I am really looking forward to getting my teeth into this forum, anything to deepen the knowledge of my codes on the side I would really love to see. Very excited for this and to see what happens.

I enjoy HTML coding when I can (somehow) manage to put in the time, and I would love to get the hang of CSS so hopefully this forum will help me learn.

Thank you for pushing this idea along Das, I can see a bright future ahead for a new community in the bowels of Tip.it. :)
